Engine outline
211 Overview on engine function
This engine is of in-line type, 6-cylinder, water-cooled, direct injection, four strokes and turbocharged
diesel engine, and is characterized with high reliability, low fuel consumption and noise, and others.
Beside, this engine meets the China-III emission standards.
Engine ignition sequence
Cylinder is numbered sequentially from the flywheel. Sequence of igniter: 1-5-3-6-2-4. Viewed from the
flywheel, the engine rotates counterclockwise.

Engine cylinder number

Engine principle
As this engine is of four-stroke diesel engine, each work cycle is divided into four processes: intake, compression, power, exhaust.
During the intake, the fresh air is sucked into the engine until the piston reaches the BDC, ending the intake process. Then, piston
moves upward to compress the fresh air that gets hotter and hotter. When the piston is close to the TDC, diesel is injected into the
combustion chamber with the fuel injector in the atomized manner to mix with the high-temperature air, and then the mixture is
rapidly ignited and combusted, pushing the piston downwards to start with the work process. When the piston reaches the BDC,
the power process is completed. After that, the piston moves upwards under the inertial force until the TDC, draining out the
combusted residual exhaust gas and thus completing the exhaust process. Up to now, the diesel engine completes one work
cycle.

⑪ Remove the inside and outside springs of valves, upper and lower seats of springs off intake and
exhaust valves, valve clips and valves. For details, see the removal instruction of valve mechanism.
⑫ Remove the seal cartridge of valve rod.
22102 Installation procedure of cylinder head assembly
Reverse to the sequence of removing the signal generator.
2211 Disassembly, inspection, maintenance and assembly of cylinder head
22111 Disassembly procedure of cylinder head
For removal of cylinder head, firstly take down the parts off the cylinder head, as well as the intake pipe,
exhaust pipe (refer to the disassembly illustration on enter and exhaust system), fuel pipeline and
harness (refer to the disassembly illustration on fuel system), cylinder head cover, oil-gas separator,
water outlet pipe and lifting plate (refer to the disassembly illustration on cylinder head). Disassembly
procedure shown below:
① Loosen the bolts and nuts off cylinder head to take down the clamps that have two structures: one is
mounted between the two cylinder heads and the other is mounted on the front and rear cylinder
heads. .
② Loosen the main bolts attached to the cylinder head.
③ Removal of fuel injector: as the fuel injector nozzle protrudes the bottom surface of cylinder head,
ensure the spark plug has been taken down before removal of cylinder head. Otherwise, the cylinder
head is liable to impact the head of spark plug during the installation.
④ Removal of cylinder head: put the removed cylinder head onto the paperboard so as not to rub the
upper surface of combustion chamber and other sealing surface. More than one cylinder heads, if to be
removed, should be marked with cylinder number for further solution to the problem.
⑤ Removal of cylinder head gasket: more than one cylinder head gasket, if to be removed, should be
marked with the cylinder number for further solution to the problem;
⑥ The auxiliary bolts of cylinder head could be removed for the purpose of its replacement or inspection.
⑦ Remove the valve mechanism such as the rocker arm seat and intake/exhaust valve (refer to the
disassembly illustration on valve mechanism).
⑧ For the purpose of its replacement or inspection, the seal cartridge of valve rod could be removed
with the special tools or by using the pliers to clip the wall of this seal cartridge to be replaced and to
rotationally lift it. The removed seal cartridge of valve rod should be discarded and not be reused.
22112 Inspection and maintenance of cylinder head
① Check if there are leakages of both water, oil and gas or other abnormalities at the matching face
between cylinder head and the engine block before removal of cylinder head. If so, try replacing with a
new cylinder head gasket for the solution to the above problem. For the method to remove and install the
cylinder head gasket, see this section.

18
CMT96 Maintenance Manual for Off-Highway Dump Truck
② Check if the cylinder head appearance is discolored or cracked. In case it is cracked, perform the dye
penetration test on it.
③ Check for the valve sinkage before removal of valve mechanism. The valve sinkage refers to the
vertical distance from the bottom surface of valve to the bottom surface of cylinder head. In addition, the
difference between the measured valve sinkage and the required one could indirectly reflect the wearing
of both valve and valve seat. This sinkage can be measured with a depth micrometer. If the measured
value exceeds the allowable range, check the valve and valve base for wear by the means of installing
the unused valve for the measurement of valve sinkage again. If this problem still exists, replace the
cylinder head so as to guarantee the reliability of diesel engine. If the valve sinkage does not exceed the
allowable value, remove the valve to check the sealing face between the valve and valve base ring for
obvious abrasion or abnormal damage.

Depth micrometer
Required valve sinkage value
(mm)
Air intake ±0.2
Top of cylinder ±0.2

④ After the valve mechanism is removed, check whether the inside of intake and exhaust passages on
the cylinder head leaks or not; if so, perform the dye penetration test to locate the leakage, and replace
with a new one if needed.
⑤ Clean the cylinder head, especially the surface of combustion chamber, valve seat, intake and
exhaust valves, intake and exhaust passages, so as to make sure there is no carbon accumulation and
adhesive. Besides, check the cylinder surface state.
⑥ Check the inside diameter of valve guide. As the inside diameter of valve guide is the friction face
between the valve guide and valve, if the valve guide is so worn that the inside diameter exceeds the
allowable value, the valve guiding effect will be impacted and the reliability of diesel engine will decrease.
The inside diameter of valve guide could be measured with an inside micrometer, with measured value
ranging from 11mm to 11.018mm. Otherwise, replace the cylinder head so as to guarantee the reliability
of diesel engine.

Inside micrometer
⑦ Remove the cylinder head gasket to check if it’s damaged; if so, find out the causes and replace with
a new gasket regardless of the cylinder head gasket being good.
⑧ Before removal, check if the rubber lip of valve rod seal cartridge is damaged and if the spring fails or
has other problems. In addition, the removed valve rod seal cartridge must be discarded.
22113 Assembly procedure of cylinder head
1. Assembly of auxiliary bolt of cylinder head

19
