TEXT 1: GAP YEAR

According to the research results, achieved in a recent Finnish study, a gap year between high school and the
start of university studies does not weaken young people’s enthusiasm to study or their overall performance
once the studies have started. On the other hand, young people who continue to university studies directly
after upper secondary school are more resilient in their studies and more committed to the study goals.
However, they are also more stressed than those who start their studies after a gap year.

TEXT 2: ONLINE COMMUNICATION

When a thousand teenagers were surveyed about their habits back in 2012, most of them said that their
favourite way to communicate with friends was “in person.” Fast forward almost ten years, and most teens
now say their favourite mode of communication is texting (35%). Teenagers reported that technology is
having positive effects on their lives, like making them feel more popular and more confident, as well as less
lonely and less depressed. However, nearly half (44%) say they get frustrated with their friends for being on
their phones when they’re hanging out together; yet an even greater proportion (54%) admit that they get
distracted by social media when they should be paying more attention to the people that they are with.

TEXT 3: MUSIC
The results of a research study, titled ‘Adolescents’ Expressed Meanings of Music in and out of School’ were
announced. The study was based on responses by 1,155 teens, who stated that they value music making as a
central aspect of their identities. It outlines what music and music making means to teens – that playing music
provides a sense of belonging for them and provides the freedom to just be themselves. Moreover, according
to the study, music helps teenagers release or control emotions. Teens associate playing music with music
literacy, listening skills, motor ability, eye-hand coordination and heightened intellectual capabilities.

TEXT 4: FAST FOOD

New government figures show that after a period of improvement, U.S. kids are eating as much fast food as
they were in the early 2000s. According to the research, there are several underlying reasons for this. Firstly,
fast-food companies have been pioneers in using digital marketing. Nearly 70% of teens “engaged with” food
and beverage brands on social media - meaning they followed the brands, or “liked” or shared their content.
Secondly, in recent years, fast-food companies have been promoting “healthy” side-order and drink options
for kids. As a result, most parents buy fast food more often because of those policies.

TEXT 5: YOUNG ENTERPRENEURS

Research suggests that the number of teenagers in the UK with their own businesses has gone up 700% in
10 years. These include tech companies, clothing lines and make-up brands. George Bailey, 19, who runs
his own company said: “I think tech and social media has made it easier for young people to start their own
business.” According to the research, one in five (19%) teens would much rather be their own boss than work
for someone else. George says: “We can set our own goals, it’s great we don’t have someone above telling
us what to do and we can make sure we’re getting everything right from an ethical perspective.”

TEXT 6: FAST FASHION*

According to a consumer survey, which assessed the changing fashion landscape, 54 per cent of people
said they opposed fast fashion and 69 per cent expressed concern at the industry’s environmental impact.
That said, they collectively recognised that their actions ‘are not very green’, with 44 per cent of respondents
admitting they throw away ‘perfectly good clothes’. “In today’s world, it’s so easy to hit ‘add to cart’ without
considering the true impact of our decisions – both on the people that are making these products, as well as
on the environment,” said Mark Abrials, who conducted the survey.

TEXT 1: BODY CLOCK

Teenagers in California are about to get some much-needed extra sleep. A new law will push start times later
for most schools; high schools will start no earlier than 08:30 and middle schools 08:00. The move is based
on a sizeable body of research. Biologically, teenagers have a different sleep-wake cycle to people of other
ages. Their internal body clock, which tells them when and how long to sleep, does not line up well with the
norms of the social clock. Forcing teenagers out of bed early in the morning to go to school can affect their
physical and mental health, attention span and ability to learn.

TEXT 3: NEWS
A new study has confirmed the undeniable power of YouTube. The poll, conducted by survey software
company Survey Monkey, found that today’s teens are turning away from traditional news organizations
to find out about current events from online influencers on social media platforms like YouTube. The study
also found that YouTube’s recommendation algorithm is key to this consumption, with 50% of teen viewers
saying they find news via the platform’s recommendation algorithm. Only 27% subscribe to a specific channel
for news, according to the study, while 10% search for news on YouTube and 7% check out news videos

TEXT 5: HEALTH APPS

Researchers at the University of Birmingham found that young people are important users of digital health
technologies. “Some young people use apps to find information related to their bodies, and they can do this
without an adult, and in ways that work around the school pressures of homework,” said Dr. Goodyear. The
findings of this research paint young adults’ usage of technology in a positive light and show adults that
teenagers are using tech for good purposes, not just as a distraction. Health education is incredibly important
for teens and young adults, and if apps and devices can equip them with more information about their bodies,
then parents, educators, and tech developers should be paying attention.

A new study has found that teens who work over the summer gain a significant competitive advantage
when they enter the world of work as adults. Developing early knowledge of the working world and how to
manage it, they are more likely to find good employment and earn more money in the future, said the study
by the University of British Columbia, Canada. Prof. Seidel found that teens in part-time jobs progress to
better-suited careers since the early exposure to work helps them identify their preferences. They enhance
their communication skills, acquire better references and learn how to job-hunt more successfully - establishing

TEXT 1: TRADITIONAL JOBS

Teenagers are ignoring digital jobs and are more willing to work in the most popular, traditional
occupations – like teachers, doctors or vets – despite major changes to the world of work. Young people’s
career expectations have become more concentrated in fewer occupations over the past two decades
despite the rise of social media and technologies, according to a report from the Organisation for Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD). Andreas Schleicher, OECD education and skills director, said: “The
surveys show that too many teenagers are ignoring, or are unaware of, new types of jobs that are emerging,
particularly as a result of digitalisation.”

TEXT 2: LANGUAGES
BBC analysis has found that the number of teenagers learning foreign languages in UK secondary schools
has dropped by 45% since the turn of the millennium. The reaction to the research was mixed. Some people
wondered why they should learn a foreign language when English is spoken by hundreds of millions of people
worldwide. Others questioned the need for a second language when translation technology is advancing so
quickly. On the other hand, studies suggest that learning a second language can slow brain ageing, and can
lead to higher mental function in the brain.

TEXT 3: INFORMATION SOURCES

Americans struggle to determine what news and information sources they should trust and how to identify
reliable information online, and many express a desire to get help. About six-in-ten adults (61%) say they
need training on how to find trustworthy information online, according to a new survey by the Pew Research
Center. About 78% of adults feel that public libraries help them find information that is trustworthy and reliable
and 76% say libraries help them learn new things.

TEXT 4: ENVIRONMENT
1,000 teenagers (aged 14-16) were polled about their attitudes towards sustainability. The survey found that
80 per cent of participants feel pressured to save the planet but do not think they are well-enough equipped
to make a difference. While 39 per cent said they “deeply care” about the impact humans are having on the
planet, 44 per cent stated they never or rarely hear about sustainability in the classroom. Due to the lack
of formal education on the issue, an educational programme has been launched, providing lessons which
explore global supply chains and sustainable business practices.

TEXT 5: PETS
Three-fourths of Americans in their 30s have dogs, while 51 percent have cats, according to a survey
by research firm Mintel. All of this has big implications for the $63 billion pet industry, which has grown
three-fold since 1996. One-third of owners said they bought toys for their pets, while 17% bought pet costumes.
A majority of millennials (76%) said they are more likely to spend money on their pets than on themselves,
including buying expensive treats or a custom bed.

TEXT 6: DIGITAL FOOTPRINT

Children and young people are spending more time online. This online activity creates digital footprints, which
refers to the information and data that people generate, through action or passive recording, when they go
online. While young people are frequently online, they do not consciously consider how their usage affects
their digital identity. Digital footprints now play a role in people’s employment and educational opportunities.
One way to address this is for schools to explicitly teach students how to develop positive digital footprints
that will help, rather than hinder, them in the future.
