occupations – like teachers, doctors or vets – despite major changes to the world of work. Young people’s
career expectations have become more concentrated in fewer occupations over the past two decades
despite the rise of social media and technologies, according to a report from the Organisation for Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD). Andreas Schleicher, OECD education and skills director, said: “The
surveys show that too many teenagers are ignoring, or are unaware of, new types of jobs that are emerging,
particularly as a result of digitalisation.”

BBC analysis has found that the number of teenagers learning foreign languages in UK secondary schools
has dropped by 45% since the turn of the millennium. The reaction to the research was mixed. Some people

worldwide. Others questioned the need for a second language when translation technology is advancing so
quickly. On the other hand, studies suggest that learning a second language can slow brain ageing, and can
lead to higher mental function in the brain.

1,000 teenagers (aged 14-16) were polled about their attitudes towards sustainability. The survey found that
80 per cent of participants feel pressured to save the planet but do not think they are well-enough equipped
to make a difference. While 39 per cent said they “deeply care” about the impact humans are having on the
planet, 44 per cent stated they never or rarely hear about sustainability in the classroom. Due to the lack
of formal education on the issue, an educational programme has been launched, providing lessons which
explore global supply chains and sustainable business practices.
