FRACTION:
A fraction is a number representing part of a whole.
Note:
• The whole may be a single object or a group of objects.
• The parts have to be equal.
Eg:
ଷ represents
ଵ଴

where 10 stands for the number of parts into which the whole has been divided and
3 stands for the number of equal parts which have been taken out.
It is read as ‘three tenths’.
3 is called the numerator and 10 is called the denominator.
Ex:7.1 (Qn:1,2,3 - do in the book).
4) What fraction of a day is 8 hours?
Ans:
1 day =24 hours.

7) Kanchana dyes dresses. She had to dye 30 dresses. She has so far
finished 20 dresses. What fraction of dresses has she finished?
Ans:
No. of dresses had to dye = 30.
No. of dresses finished = 20.

8) Write the natural numbers from 2 to 12. What fraction of
them are prime numbers?
Ans :
Natural nos. from 2 to 12 = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.
Total numbers = 11.
Prime numbers = 2, 3, 5, 7, 11.
Number of primes = 5.

Fraction of primes = ଵଵ
10) Kristin received a CD player for her birthday. She bought 3 CD’s and
received 5 others as gifts. What fraction of her total CD’s did she buy and
what fraction did she receive as gifts?

Ans:
No. of CD’s she bought = 3.
No. of CD’s she received as gifts = 5.
Total no. of CD’s = 3+5 = 8.
