A consolidated undrained (CU) test is conducted on a saturated overconsolidated

clay with OCR=10. During the test, the vertical stress (1) is increased to failure
keeping the horizontal stress (3) constant at 80kPa. The test results are shown
below in terms of axial strain (%), deviator stress (1-3)/’c and Skempton’s
pore pressure parameter A.

Axial Strain  Shear Stress (1-3)/’c A

(%)
0 0 0.1
0.5 0.16 0.05
2.5 0.58 -0.11
5.0 0.8 -0.23
7.5 0.94 -0.32

A second consolidated undrained (CU) test is performed on the identical saturated

overconsolidated clay at the same initial confining stress (80kPa). But in this test,
both the vertical (1) and the lateral (3) stresses are varied in such a way that k
value (= 3/1) is kept constant at 0.2.
If the results of this second test are same as those shown in the above table for the
first test, calculate the stresses and pore pressures at the above axial strains for the
second CU test. Draw the total and effective stress paths for the second CU test.
