Activity 1: Reaction Paper

Why is organic chemistry so important?

"Organic Chemistry is the chemistry of carbon compounds." It is the study of the

structure, properties, composition, reactions, and preparation of carbon-containing compounds.
Most organic compounds contain carbon and hydrogen, but they may also include any number of
other elements such as nitrogen, oxygen, halogens, phosphorus, silicon, sulphur, and etc. An
organic compound has molecules that can be liquid, solid, or gaseous.

Based on the video that I have watched, organic chemistry plays a big role in our daily
lives and I think that it is true because I see that organic compounds are all around us. Many of
the materials that we use are partially composed of organic compounds. All our basic needs like
food, clothes, shelter, treatment, and education contain organic compounds. For example, the
food that we eat like potatoes, rice, eggs, fish, and chicken contains organic compounds. It
contains amino acids or polyamides that are organic compounds. Even sugar and starch contain
organic compounds that are very important for us to gain strength and energy in our daily life. It
seems that we cannot live without organic compounds, because they have a vital role in the
production of our various foods. Also, to increase the production of crops, we use chemicals such
as insecticides, pesticides, herbicides, and etc. These chemicals are mainly organic compounds.
Even our comfortable clothes contain organic compounds derived from raw materials used in the
construction of shelters, such as wood, bamboo, and furniture.

In addition, the organic compound has served as a human function. It is crucial to the
modern world, especially in medications and treatments. The pharmaceutical industry develops
and produces drugs such as antibiotics, anticancer drugs, cardiac drugs, sulpha drugs,
antiulcerants, antidepressants, vitamins, and so on. They are all organic molecules. However, we
should not take organic compounds for granted because they are extremely important to us; in
fact, we cannot survive in this world without them, in my opinion. Even the very little things that
we call pen and paper that are very important to students like me, these things have organic
compounds. Also, the products that you’ve been patronizing, like lipstick, eye brows, mascara,
shampoo, alcohol, soap, nail polish, and many more, all have organic compounds that are more
than a treasure that we should be thankful for.

Finally, I realized how important organic compounds are, to the point where I want to
learn more about them and inform others about how important they are in our daily lives. In
conclusion, we should learn more about organic compounds and educate others about them. We
must demonstrate to the world the significance of organic chemistry in our lives. To understand
and make changes and innovations in our universe, we must learn every detail of organic
chemistry.
