Rating Scale

A rating scale is a closed-end survey question that is used to evaluate how

survey responders feel about a particular product or statement.

Responders are typically asked to choose from a range of options — which

are scaled between two extremes— like Excellent to Terrible. The rating scale
is a variant of the well-known multiple choice question.

Rating scales are popular for their ability to allow quantitative measures to be
applied to more abstract, subjective sentiments. Satisfaction, experience,
perception, and feeling are all difficult to quantify, but when done well, a
rating scale is useful for measuring performance or effectiveness and has
application in personality research.

The rating scale allows the teacher to measure the tasks, performance, skill,
level, processes, procedure and products.

The British Columbia Institute of Technology (2010) mentioned that rating

scales must have the following:

1. clear criteria
2. concise and direct statement,
3. logical presentation,
4. clear wordings when a number scale is used,
5. clear and simple terms,
6. important tasks and skills highlighted and,
7. reviewed by other teachers.
Advantages and disadvantages of Rating Scale

Amin (2017) cited several advantages and disadvantages of a rating scale.

Advantages

1. It records both qualitative and quantitative performance.

2. It measures specific outcomes or objectives.
3. It evaluates procedures during skill demonstration.
4. It helps teachers to assess students in various ways.
5. It can be used for a large number of students.
6. It minimizes subjectivity and unreliability.

Disadvantages

1. It cannot rate all aspects of an individual.

2. If it is misused, it reduces objectivity.
3. Subjective evaluation can affect objectivity and reliability.
4. There is a lack of standard in interpreting the result.
5. Ambiguity, rater’s attitude and personality and logical errors can affect
the assessment and result.
