• Personal wellbeing can mean
different things to different people
but generally speaking it is the
experience of feeling happy, healthy
Introduction and prosperous . It includes enjoying
good mental health, satisfaction with
life, the ability to manage stress and
have a sense of purpose and meaning
in your life.
Personal Wellbeing

• Wellbeing comes from your thoughts, actions, and

experiences - most of which you have control over.

For example, when you think positively, you tend to

have greater emotional wellbeing .

Types of wellbeing
There are five types of wellbeing:
•Emotional Wellbeing - the ability to practice stress-management techniques, be
resilient, and generate the emotions that lead to good feelings.

•Physical Wellbeing - the ability to improve the functioning of your body through
healthy eating and good exercise habits.

• Social Wellbeing - the ability to communicate, develop meaningful relationships with others, and
maintain a support network that helps you overcome loneliness.

• Workplace Wellbeing - the ability to pursue your interests, values, and purpose in order to gain
meaning, happiness, and enrichment professionally.

• Societal Wellbeing - the ability to actively participate in a thriving community, culture, and environment.

• To achieve a sense of overall wellbeing, each of these five factors needs to be in balance. If everything in
your life is going well but you are feeling lonely, other areas of your life will be affected

Depression

• We all have times when we feel down, but depression is about more than feeling
sad or fed up for a few days.
• Depression causes a low mood that lasts a long time and affects your daily life.
• Mild depression can make you feel low and as though everything is harder to do.
Severe depression can lead to feeling hopeless and, in some cases, suicidal.
• If you're depressed, you're not alone.
• Remember that help and support is available, and recovery is possible even if
you've felt depressed for a long time.
1.1 Identify Personal
factors that may
impact on wellbeing
Symptoms of Depression:
• guilty or worthless • finding it hard to get to sleep or waking up
• lacking in self-confidence and self-esteem very early
• unable to enjoy things that usually bring you pleasure • changes in your weight or appetite
• helpless or hopeless • avoid other people, even your close friends
• anxious or worried • find it hard to function at work, college or
school
• suicidal or want to hurt yourself.
• find it difficult to make decisions or think
• tiredness and lack of energy clearly
• moving or speaking more slowly • be unable to concentrate or remember
things.
1.1 Identify Personal factors that may
impact on wellbeing
• Now, all of the listed factors might not be relevant to you and your personal wellbeing.
• Aside from our essential needs, we all have different ideas and preferences when it
comes to personal fulfilment.
• A simple example is that of exercise. For some people, the need for physical
movement is fulfilled through a daily dog walk, whereas another person may not feel
fulfilled unless they complete an intense workout each morning.
• Each of us have differing needs, and you should always think about what wellbeing
means to you rather than what you think it should mean in a general sense.
1.2 Identify workplace factors that may impact
on wellbeing

Workplace factors impacting on wellbeing:

• As well as factors in your personal life, factors in your working life can also have an
impact on your general wellbeing.
• Most of us spend a large proportion of our lives at work, so it’s important to not
underestimate the impact that this aspect can have on the way we feel about
ourselves and our general satisfaction with life.

• The types of workplace factors which have an impact on wellbeing will differ between
individuals, the roles they have, and the importance they place on different areas of
work.
1.2 Identify workplace factors that may impact
on wellbeing
Stress
• Stress is a major concern in many workplaces, with increasing demands and
often unrealistic deadlines and work goals being placed on employees.
• It is important for your own health and wellbeing that you develop strategies
for handling stress.
• Depending on the nature of your job there are several factors that may contribute to stress in
the workplace and their effects.

• Sources of stress within the workplace can include complex tasks, cultural issues, and
workload as well as work and family conflict.

• It is important to identify signs of stress before they get worse and significantly affect your
physical, mental, social or spiritual health.
1.2 Identify workplace factors that may impact on
wellbeing
Signs of Stress:

The effects of stress can vary from person to person, and everyone
has their own signs of stress. These may include:

• Difficulty dealing with change

• Increasing anxiety
• Sleeping problems
• Personal conflict
• Ill health
• Declining mental health
• Drug and alcohol dependency withdrawal and depression.
1.2 Identify workplace factors that may impact on
wellbeing

Ways to manage Stress:

• It is important to be aware of your personal stress indicators and

put strategies in place to manage and reduce your levels of
stress.
1.2 Identify workplace factors that may impact on
wellbeing

Ways to manage Stress:

Sleep –

• getting enough sleep at night is important.

• It will help you see things more clearly and can help you cope with potentially

stressful situations at work.

• It will also help you to stay physically, emotionally and socially healthy.
1.2 Identify workplace factors that may impact on
wellbeing

Ways to manage Stress:

Exercise –

• Physical activity releases endorphins;

• These cause you to feel happier and more positive.

• Exercising can allow you to feel more relaxed and calmer and it can also help you to

sleep more soundly.

1.2 Identify workplace factors that may impact on
wellbeing

Ways to manage Stress:

Limit alcohol intake –

• Alcohol is a depressant drug.
• It slows down your central nervous system and will make any situation feel worse.
• It is a temporary fix for work stress and anxiety; regular use can lead to dependence or
abuse.
1.2 Identify workplace factors that may impact on
wellbeing

Ways to manage Stress:

Eat healthy foods regularly –

• Not eating causes low blood glucose levels and this can cause you to feel lethargy: and irritable.

• Eating healthy foods, high in fibre will cause blood glucose levels to rise slowly over a long period

of time; this allows you to feel more energetic for longer.

1.2 Identify workplace factors that may impact on
wellbeing

Ways to manage Stress:

Arrange activities with friends -

• Finding time to relax with friends is good for your health and gives you time out from work or
school.
1.2 Identify workplace factors that may impact
on wellbeing

Workplace factors can include:

▪ Job satisfaction and enjoyment

▪ Working hours

▪ Relationships in the workplace

▪ Job security

▪ Rate of pay

▪ Clarity of role and responsibilities

▪ Feelings of value and respect.

1.2 Identify workplace factors that may impact
on wellbeing

• Bear in mind that, as mentioned above, impacting workplace factors can

also differ depending on the position you might hold, but that doesn’t
automatically mean that a role with a higher level of responsibility is
more likely to be disconnected with a person’s wellbeing.
• Many people may feel unworthy of feeling stressed or anxious simply
because somebody else has it worse.
• Remember that everything is relative, and different people have
different capabilities when it comes to handling life and work.
1.3 Recognise relationship between personal wellbeing and identified
workplace factors relevant to own role

Wellbeing and Work Performance

• There is little doubt that people who are struggling with their personal
wellbeing will not be performing to their best ability at work.
• There used to be an expectation that employees leave their personal life at
home.
• Increasingly, however, businesses are understanding the impact that other
factors have on their employees' work and instead of expecting them to
leave their personal lives at home, they are supporting and assisting
them.
1.3 Recognise relationship between personal wellbeing and identified
workplace factors relevant to own role

Wellbeing and Work Performance

• Even a positive personal issue can impact in the workplace if the employee is distracted and
not working to their usual standard.
• According to research by Bensinger, DuPont & Associates, 47% of employees say that
problems in their personal lives sometimes affect their work performance. More than 15%
reported that personal changes caused absenteeism and nearly half said it was hard for them
to concentrate.
• This can have serious impact both on other workers and the productivity and success of a
business.
• A good employer will be proactive in assisting an employee with addressing personal issues
which are impacting on their work.
• However, they also may not be aware that there is a problem so it will be up to the employee
to talk to their supervisor for assistance.
• This could be a difficult conversation as the employee may not want to share their personal
problems in the workplace or may not be sure of their supervisor's reaction.
1.3 Recognise relationship between personal wellbeing and identified
workplace factors relevant to own role

Work-life balance
• The work-life balance is something that most adults in the western world
struggle with.
• So much so that this has now been renamed to the ‘work-life blend’.
• It’s not debatable that work takes over most of our lives, regardless of
position or industry.
• Whilst this isn’t always a negative thing, it’s important to remember that it’s
not possible to do everything.
• There will always be something in our lives that slips whilst we
concentrate on another part.
1.3 Recognise relationship between personal wellbeing and identified
workplace factors relevant to own role

Work-life balance
• The aim of managing wellbeing is to make sure that you are not detrimentally affected by
performing this balancing act.
• It’s ok to feel tired, unmotivated, or distracted every so often, but you must recognise
when these things are having a more severe impact.
• These signs can be different for everyone, so it’s important to recognize the ‘personal’ in
personal wellbeing and learn about yourself and what is normal.
