40 GROWING UP
In the Zambian Traditional Society, people developed by being with other people. This was done
through sharing. Sharing was very common and important. For example family members shared
whatever resources they had in the family. Special attention was paid to the orphans and old
people. No one lacked anything someone took care of those in need. Strangers were also taken
care of by the community. At community level, sharing various things such as firewood, grazing
land and fish ponds was common. Animals, such as cattle and goats, were valued as they were
taken to be valuable possessions.
In modern Zambia, the value of sharing is no longer practised for different reason such as:
population increase, inflation, education and people living in big towns. This situation has led to
many street kids and the elderly becoming destitute.
As communities, we need to reconsider the idea of sharing because not all members of the
family may have everything they need. So when we learn to # share freely with members of
the family and other people, it shows that we are concerned about their welfare. Most of all
we need to look after the elderly members of our society.
(a) How did people in Zambian Traditional Societies develop by being with other people?
(b) State two groups of people who received special attention.
(c) According to the passage, mention two things that were shared at community level.
(d) Why is the value of sharing no longer practised in Modern Zambian Society? State two

Every person is going to die one day. This is true whether we believe in a greater life or not'''
therefore, it is important for us to prepare for death. People prepare for death in different ways.
For example, some people prepare for death by writing a will or investing money in business for
their children. Some people contribute part of their salary to a life assurance scheme so that
when they die (or any member assured dies) they will receive some money to help them with
funeral expenses. While others pray to God for His help before they die
When the day was approaching on which Monica was to depart from this life, she sat talking
together with her son Malembeka in deep joy. Monica said, "My son, for my own part, I no
longer find joy in anything in this world. What I am still to do here and why I am here I do not
know". She continued, "I no longer hope for anything from this world. One thing which I had
desired to remain still a little longer in this life, was that I should have seen you become a
committed Christian".
"Since you have become a committed Christian, I can now die in peace", she said.
Having said these words, Monica blessed her son and urged him to continue being a good person
to everyone. She then closed her eyes and died peacefully.

40 DIVISION, SIN AND FORGIVENESS

Once upon a time in Matoba Village, there lived a man called Kasweka. He was married and had
three children, a boy and two girls. Kasweka was known to be of bad character. He was a
drunkard, a thief, dishonesty, lazy and a womanizer.
Each time he went to drink beer, he would be surrounded by women. He earned himself a nick
name from women as “Big Buyer.” This was because he would buy a lot of beer and give women
as long as they greeted him.
The wife used to sell at a local market to support the family. Whenever the wife went home with
some money, Kasweka would steal and use it for drinking. When asked by his wife, he always
denied having taken any. If the wife insisted, he would beat her badly together with the children.
Therefore, his wife and children were always living in fear.
Whenever he came across some things such as hoes, axes and other items in the village, he
would pick them up and then sell them elsewhere to raise money for drinking. Sometimes he
would borrow money from friends. In most cases, he would not pay back the money he
borrowed.
During the rainy season, while other people went into the fields to cultivate, Kasweka pretended
to be sick. He did this so that he could avoid going to the field.

half dead. He was taken to the clinic by a passer-by. He had a lot of cuts on his body and so he
was admitted to the clinic. He spent one week in the clinic.
One day, the pastor from the local church visited him preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ to him
which made him repent of his sins. He asked for forgiveness from God, his wife and neighbours.
Then he joined the church and started attending church services and prayer meetings twice a
week. He was no longer seen in the bars and never borrowed money from people. He also
stopped stealing from his wife and from the villagers. The Kasweka’s family were once again
living happily.
Kasweka was now a staunch Christian. However, some people, especially those who had known
him for a long time said he was just pretending and he would go back to his old habits.
Kasweka did not pay attention to the people who were doubting his new and changed life style.

38 MORALITY AND VALUES

In Zambian traditional societies, people shared the same values and strictly followed similar
customs. The way of living followed rules that were well known by most of the people and
widely accepted. Living together was greatly emphasised in society. The importance of
community living was expressed through songs, proverbs, dances, sharing and many activities.
For example, family members shared whatever resources that they had in the family.
Therefore, no one lacked anything within families. In addition, the Community shared various
things such as firewood, grazing lands, cultivating land and many other things. Sharing was a
way of showing respect and love to other people regardless of their status in society.
The needs of the group came before the needs of an individual. A person gained status (value)
according to what he or she had contributed to the wellbeing or the entire group. It was the
group and not the individual who determined the work a person had to do and the importance

38 COMPETITION, COOPERATION AND TRUST

The term for Ward 19 Councillor had come to an end. He had to prepare himself to compete
with other people who wanted also to be counillors. Different political parties converged at
Ward 19 to sell their candidates for the position of councillor. Each political party would strive
or try hard to convince the electorates that they were better placed to bring development to
the ward than their opponents.
If political parties were not mature enough, petty jealousy, insulting of one another and
fighting would be the order of the day. But competing in an election needs people and political
parties to understand that competition must always go hand-in-hand with responsibilities.
Each person and each political party has the responsibility to conduct themselves in a selfless
manner because competition is not a forum to look down on others or show ones full pride
Page 51 of 75 WATSAP: LAURENT MUSONDA - 0965038377 / 0974794056

but to make it possible for the electorates to choose a better person who will use his talents
and wisdom to improve their standard of living.
Moreover, they can cooperate and have rallies at the same time and same venue and save
both money and time. Even the people would see and judge better who is the best candidate.
Competition in the political world usually brings out negative things which most of the times,
have got no bearing to the people in that area. Selfish inclination, tribalism, regionalism,
corruption, mudslinging, looking down on others as incompetent, poor leadership and
uneducated are common during campaign.
Competition in election is not about confusing people with lies and empty promises but where
candidates explain in details about how they intend to develop an area. Therefore, leaders
need to co-operate and work together towards a common goal. The Tonga proverb here
proves to be true that "Munwe omwe taupwayi njina" (One finger cannot kill a louse) and
another, the Bemba proverb attests to the same idea 'Abali babili na mano yabili" (where
there are two people, there is double wisdom). Indeed one person cannot know all the
problems or solve all the problems in the ward. They need each other, therefore, there must
be trust among politicians and show maturity and civility in sling themselves to the people. The
people will not trust them with their welfare unless those aspiring to be councillors first trust
one another and compete in a peaceful way and respectful manner.
Thereafter, there is a stream of lies about what they will do for the people. The people in Ward
19 are simple people who just need security, health services and education for their children.
These things are simple but they are hard to achieve.

(a) What was the election in Ward 19 based on?

(b) State three things that might happen if political parties who were selling their
candidates were not mature enough.
(c) State what responsibility each person and political party is suppose to have.
(d) From the passage, state two things that competition is not a forum for.
(e) What two things would the electorates look for in a person they want to choose as a
councillor?
(f) State two things political parties would save if they cooperated and did rallies together.
(g) The two proverbs in the passage teach about ...
(h) State four negative things that usually come up during the political competition.
(i) What two things do the people in Ward 19 need most?
(j) Fwelela nakuhane nakushiki nakwango" (Luvale proverb) - (Trust the one who has given
you, the one who has just promised has deceived you). This proverb teaches about.
(k) State one value that you have learnt from the passage in order to build a positive
relationship with others.

39 PRAYER
Long ago when the earth was still young, the Greater Being and the ancestral spirits used to
live close to the people and hence prayers and sacrifices were received and instant answers
were given. When there was a drought, for example, people prayed for the rains and they
came even before the people left the shrine. The hunters killed animals within a short distance
from the village.
Prayers were conducted at the shrine located in various places such as mountains, waterfalls
and big forests which reminded them of the goodness and greatness of the Greater Being.
Mountains made one to forget about him/herself and felt to be closer to the Greater Being.
They made it possible for a person who is praying to connect himself/herself to the Greater
Being and the rest of the universe. In this way one reached out and shared in the wisdom and
power of the Greater Being.
Waterfalls represent life as water gives life to all living things. Man constantly prayed to the
Greater Being at the waterfalls for abundant rainfall for him to grow food and sustain all his
animals and birds. Moreover, waterfalls gave peace, moment of reflection and relaxation to a
person who prayed there. Kalambo Falls in Northern Province is one example of the falls that
gave one a moment to connect oneself to the Greater Being.
Big forests were givers of fire wood (fuel), birds and animals for food; fruits and herbs for
healing and rejuvenation of human beings. All these things were found in big forests and
reminded one who prayed there about the greatness and goodness of the Greater Being who
was the sole provider and sustainer of all creation.
In all the three areas where shrines were located, people prayed and prayers were answered.
If the prayer was not answered, then the community would think deeply in order to establish
the root cause. If the sacrifice was to be offered, then it would be doubled according to the
magnitude of the sin the people had committed against the Greater Being and the ancestral
spirits.
Thereafter, the prayer was answered. If the prayer was about having a lot of fish in the lake or
river, that year, the people would catch a lot of fish. In the big forest, the hunters would
always be successful in their hunting expeditions and brought to the village the gifts of the
forest, such as game meat, mushrooms and wild fruits. The healers also provided proper
medicine to the health problems of the people Indeed the Greater Being sustained the lives of
the people from age to age by answering their prayers instantly.

(b) According to the story, name three areas which were used as shrines.
(c) Give two reasons why people used to pray on the mountains.
(d) State two things that waterfalls gave to a person who prayed there. [2]
(e) Why did the Greater Being and the ancestral spirit not answer instantly the prayers
from people? Give one reason.
(f) Prayer involves various activities like asking for things or help to do things, listening to
commandments or guidance, etc. State three other activities.
(g) Why are gifts of food and drink given to the spirits or ancestors? Give one reason.
(h) State any three of the five times that the Muslim must worship God.
(i) ‘’Pray to him in any way you like. He is Sure to hear you ..." What does this teaching of
a Hindu Teacher, Ramakrishna, show?
(j) How did Jesus always express his prayer in action?
(k) What value have you learnt from the above passage?
