There is a relatively new Power over Ethernet (PoE) standard, and it has several names:
IEEE 802.3bt, 4 Pair PoE, PPOE, UPOE, PoE++.
The work of the IEEE 802.3bt version (also called "4PPOE" or "POE++") takes into account this
need to increase the supplied electrical power, as well as increasing the bandwidth to reach 10
Gbit/s. It incorporates advances in technology during this period (cf. the work on PoH). Main
evolutions of the IEEE 802.3bt version of the standard:
• Introduction of Type 3 and Type 4 for the PSE/PD duo to reach respectively 60 W and 90 W at
the source (PSE)
• Addition of new power classes: classes 5 to 8 and improvement of the process of mutual
identification between the PSE and PD
• Increase of power supply (Extended power capability) if the length of the cable used is known
• Increase of bandwidth up to 10 Gbits/s (10G-BASE-T cables) The table below summarizes the
different types of IEEE 802.3 standards
The IEEE 802.3bt standard introduces two new types of PSE/PD: types 3 and 4.
The standard introduces the concept of "Assigned class" for the PSE system that is obtained as a
result of the self-negotiation phase between the PSE and PD. The "Assigned class" value is
determined by the lowest common denominator of power values that PSE and PD equipments
can stand. For example if a PD requests to support a class 8 while a PSE can only support a class
6, the "Assigned class" value will be a class 6 for the PSE system.
The different options for using the 4 pairs.
It uses the same cabling standard as Power over Ethernet but instead of delivering
power over two of the twisted pairs, it uses all four twisted pairs in the Category 5e or
better cable.
Although PoE has been around for almost two decades, it can still be confusing and
misunderstood. PoE is a technology that enables network cables to carry electrical power.
A standard digital security camera requires two connections: a network connection to
communicate and a power connection to deliver electrical power to the device. if the
security camera is PoE-enabled, it will only need the network connection, as the network
cable will also deliver electrical power.
PoE 802.3af (also known as PoE or PoE Type I) and supports a maximum power
consumption of 15.4W. PoE 802.3at (also known as PoE+ or PoE Type 2) and delivers
power up to 30W. These two PoE standards are compatible with devices such as IP phones,
simple IP cameras, and indoor wireless access points. new applications such as LED
lighting, smart buildings, and the internet of things (IoT), there was a need for higher
bandwidth and power supply.
Before the ratification of PoE++ (802.3bt), there were non-standardized methods to figure
out this need for more power.
Option 1 – Use both PoE and a separate low voltage AC or DC power connection, i.e.,
PoE and 24VAC. This would enable the PoE to power the PTZ camera, while the 24VAC
would power the heater/blower or the infrared LEDs.
Use a non-standard PoE called “Hi-PoE” or “PoE++” that delivers up to 60W of power.
Some would think that this is the same as 802.3bt Type 3; however, it is not.
PoE Type 3 enables two or all four twisted pairs in a copper cable to supply a
maximum power of 60W.
PoE Type 4 enables all four twisted pairs in an Ethernet cable to supply a maximum
power of 100W.
What IEEE 802.3bt Brings to the Table
PoE++ allows the transfer of as much as 71W to a powered device (PD) with a maximum
cable length of 100m (328 ft.). This increased power is delivered across all four twisted
pairs. PoE++ devices offer high power and high speed at the same time. PoE++ devices
currently run smart buildings, healthcare facilities, and smart offices. To a lesser extent,
PoE++ is even being used in smart homes. However, this power technology is proliferating
in a few “niche” areas.
Industrial Automation
Industrial automation is growing rapidly and is driving many changes in networking.
demanding more responsive systems that cut costs and help push efficiency to the max.
PoE++’s higher wattage is perfect for massive sensors and the sophisticated controllers
found on every factory floor. PoE++ powers workstations and human-machine interfaces
(HMIs). It gives you the freedom to design the physical layout: power lines do not have to
be run, and HMIs can be installed in previously considered inaccessible areas. Also, with
PoE++, you have the option of splitting its power so more devices can be Industrial
Ethernet SW
Due to different classification standards, PoE can be divided into different types.
Currently, there are 4 PoE types based on IEEE PoE Standard: Type 1(IEEE 802.3af),
Type 2(IEEE 802.3at), Type 3(IEEE 802.3bt), and Type 4(IEEE 802.3bt),
PoE (IEEE 802.3af) POE type 1, provides up to 15.4 watts of power per port and is
used for devices like IP phones and cameras. PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at), PoE type 2, offers
up to 30 watts and powers devices like PTZ cameras. PoE++ or UPoE (IEEE 802.3bt),
also referred to as PoE type 3, delivers up to 60 watts and 100 watts, PoE type 4, per
port for high-performance devices. Power over HDBaseT (PoH) enables power and
data transmission for AV equipment over a single cable.
POE
Power over Ethernet (PoE) classes define standardized power levels for different
network devices. These classes ensure compatibility between Power Sourcing
Equipment (PSE) and Powered Devices (PD).
The classes, ranging from Class 1 to Class 8 as the above chart shows, correspond
to specific IEEE standards, indicating the maximum power output of the
PSE and the maximum power input of the PD. Let’s delve into more details about
each class:
Class 1 is suitable for low-power devices such as IP phones, voice-over-IP (VoIP)
devices, and basic sensors.
Class 2 is intended for devices that require slightly higher power, including wireless
access points, small IP cameras, and IP intercom systems.
Class 3 is commonly used for devices that require moderate power, such as larger IP
cameras, point-of-sale systems, and access control devices.
Class 4 provides increased power delivery capabilities and is suitable for power-
hungry devices like pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras, video phones, and thin clients.
Class 5 introduces the support for four pairs of Ethernet wires, enabling higher power
transmission. It is designed for devices with more demanding power requirements,
including advanced PTZ cameras, multi-channel wireless access points, and small LED
lighting systems.
Class 6 provides increased power delivery capabilities beyond the previous classes.
It can support devices like high-power pan-tilt-zoom cameras, multi-radio wireless
access points, and small LCD displays.
Class 7 offers even higher power capabilities introduced with the IEEE 802.3bt
standard. It is suitable for devices like high-performance access points, large displays,
and thin clients requiring substantial power.
Class 8 represents the highest power class defined by current PoE standards. It is
designed for power-hungry devices such as video conferencing systems, advanced
lighting systems, and digital signage.
It’s important to note that the power levels specified for each class represent the
maximum allowable values, and the actual power delivered or consumed by the PD
may vary based on its specific power requirements and negotiation with the PSE.
Besides, understanding PoE classes allows network administrators to ensure that the
power requirements of their devices align with the capabilities of their PoE
infrastructure, ensuring proper operation and avoiding potential power supply issues.
Power over Ethernet can also be divided into passive PoE and active PoE in general.
Active PoE is the standard PoE which refers to any type of PoE that negotiates the
proper voltage between the PSE and the PD device. Passive PoE is a non-standard
PoE technology. It can also deliver power over the Ethernet line but without the
negotiation process.
How to Add PoE to Your Network?
The PoE supplied in the network generally comes from three different sources: PoE
switch, PoE injector, and PoE splitter. The PoE switch is the easiest way to power up
the PDs. You only need to run Ethernet cables from a PoE network switch port to the
terminal PoE device. A PoE injector is used when there is no PoE switch in the
network. It has an external power supply and is responsible for adding power to data
that is coming from a network switch that is not PoE-capable. PoE splitters also supply
power, but they do so by splitting the power from the data and feeding it to a
separate input that a non-PoE-compliant device can use. It is commonly used for
deploying remote non-PoE devices with no nearby AC outlets in the network.
POE Cable Details
PoE injects power onto a cable designed for data without disrupting the high-speed traffic the
cable is carrying. The Ethernet standard and the Ethernet cable design make this a reasonably
straightforward endeavor, and PoE uses standard Ethernet cables. Inside the Ethernet cable itself
are four twisted pairs of wires. Ethernet is an isolated network, so each twisted pair connects to a
data transformer. PoE simply injects a DC voltage (~54 V) onto the twisted pairs of the Ethernet
cable through center taps on the data transformers. Because the wires are small, a higher voltage
is chosen to reduce the current flowing through the wires. In a two-pair power configuration
(802.3af, 802.3at), one twisted pair is positive, and the other is negative. In a four-pair power
configuration (802.3bt), two twisted pairs are positive, and two are negative. The power sourcing
equipment (PSE) puts power onto the cable, and the powered device (PD) takes power off the
cable. In addition, the IEEE PoE standards allow the PSE to power the twisted pairs in any
polarity, so the PD must have input bridges (diodes or actively controlled FETs) to set the
polarity of the incoming voltage.
Ethernet cabling contains four twisted pairs of wires. IEEE 802.3af/at powers two of the
four twisted pairs, and IEEE 802.3bt powers all four twisted pairs for 30 W and above.
The Classification Phase With a valid PD detected, the PSE begins the classification phase.
During classification, the PSE and PD do an analog handshake in which the PD requests a power
“class”, and the PSE responds with the class the PD is granted. Type defines the kind of analog
handshake from the PSE to the PD. Class refers to the minimum power the PSE guarantees the
PD will receive, and the maximum power the PD is allowed to draw from the cable. Just like
standard Ethernet, the cable can be up to 100 meters in length, so a fair amount of power is lost
in the cable.
PoE works by having a PoE capable injector or network switch. When the
switch connects to a device, the switch tries to make a handshake with the
device. The device has to have the signature to be able to do the handshake
to activate PoE. Some Gate works boards do not have this signature. If the
signature is not detected, then the power is not turned on.
The IEEE 802.3bt standard is the latest revision to the broadly adopted IEEE standards
for PoE device classification. The amount of power delivered from the PSE is increased
threefold, delivering up to 90 watts to a PD over four pairs of standard Category 5e
cables and above. This standard introduces additional types (Type 3 and Type 4) and
classes (class 5 to class 8) of PSE and PDs. The PSE output power ranges between 45
and 90 watts, and the PD input power ranges between 40 and 73 watts. It also enables
support for dual- signature PDs and single-signature PDs, and also supports power
demotion to handle scenarios in which a Type 4 PD is connected to a Type 3 PSE.
Type 4 delivers power over all four pairs of Ethernet cables (two pairs deliver 45 watts,
totaling up to 90 watts).
Class
The class defines the maximum power being sourced or drawn in the system. 802.3bt
introduces four more classes in addition to previous classes defined by the IEEE
802.3af and 802.3at standards. Type 3 includes two classes (class 5 and class 6), and
Type 4 includes classes 7 and 8, where 8 represents the highest power level. Each
class defines the maximum power that can be delivered by the PSE to a PD.
Device types
The device type determines the major characteristics of the PSE and PDs. An overview
of the types with classes and other details is shown in Table 1 and Figure 7. Type 1 and
Type 2 PSEs provide power over only two pairs. Type 3 PSE can provide power on two
pairs, supporting all PDs up to Class 4 (25.5 watts), or it can provide power over four
pairs, supporting all PDs up to Class 6 (51 watts). Type 4 PSE can provide power over
four pairs and can support all PDs up to Class 8 (71.3 watts).

Detection
One of the most important functions of a PoE system is the detection method, whereby
the PSE determines if the remote equipment is capable of receiving power or not. The
detection method is like that for Type 1 and Type 2 devices, but some detection
requirements have been enhanced in the 802.3bt standard.
The resistance of the PD is first measured by the PSE, using at least two
voltage/current points, namely effective and absolute. The difference between the two
resistance measurements (effective and absolute) is used to evaluate the PD detection.
The PSE will then probe the pair set (or pair sets) for a valid PD signature. Power is
applied only when a valid PD signature is found. Type 3 and Type 4 capable PSE
perform this detection on both pair sets. The requirements for PSE and both of these
PD types are quite different.
The standard does not specify a specific method to determine the PD signature; this is
considered implementation-specific to the vendor. An implementation can make use of
the defined properties to identify single- and dual-signature PDs and make its
determination. From the PSE (switch) perspective, it will work with both single- and
dual-signature PDs. The following is a brief explanation of single-signature and dual-
signature PDs.
In a single-signature PD, the two pair sets on the cable share a common detect/class
circuit. The PD can draw power on both pair sets, and both pairs have the same
Maintain Power signature (MPS) and classification and detection signature.
The classification current is shared by the two pair sets (total power = Mode A = Mode
B).
Single-signature PD
In a dual-signature PD, the two pair sets have independent detect/class circuits. The
PD can draw power on both pair sets, and they have independent MPS, with
classification and detection on both pairs. Classification currents on each pair set (total
power = Mode A + Mode B) – MPS will be enforced on each pair set.
Dual-signature PD
The 802.3bt standard provides the ability to differentiate between single- and dual-
signature PDs via the new method of a connection check.
Connection check
Connection check is a mechanism whereby 4-pair-capable PSE probes the PD to find
out if it is a single- signature configuration, a dual-signature configuration, or an invalid
PD. A connection check can happen before, after, or concurrently with the PD detection.
Detection and connection check exist for different purposes and should not be
confused. Detection identifies only whether an attached device is capable of receiving
power or not. Connection check determines whether the PD is single-signature or dual-
signature. The result of a connection check also helps determine whether a PD may be
powered over four pairs and how the PD will be treated by the PSE.
Short MPS
Short MPS is like a sleep mode that allows PDs to achieve a much lower standby power
compared to the existing standards. The minimum standby power has been reduced to
one-tenth of what the previous standards allowed (20 milliwatts versus 200 milliwatts).
This enables Internet of Things (IoT) devices to be powered with PoE and also have
acceptable standby performance.
PoE Types
PoE type, PD power, cabling, and classes.
Type 1 : Also known as PoE, 2-pair PoE. Related standard: IEEE 802.3af. Maximum power to
port: 15.4W. PoE Type 1 utilizes two pairs to connect many types of lower-powered devices to
the network. Based on the initial IEEE 802.3af-2003 standard, it provides up to 15.4W of DC
power to each PoE port (up to 12.95W of power for each device). PoE Type 1 can support
devices such as VoIP phones, sensors/meters, wireless access points with two antennas and
simple, static surveillance cameras (no pan, tilt or zoom).
Type 2 : Also known as PoE+, PoE Plus. Related standard: IEEE 802.3at. Maximum power to port:
30W. Higher-powered devices is connected to the network using PoE Type 2, based on the IEEE
802.3at-2009 standard. It is backward compatible (supports PoE Type 1 devices) and provides
30W of DC power to each PoE port (up to 25.5W of power for each device). PoE Type 2 can
support devices such as more complex surveillance cameras that pan, tilt, or zoom, as well as
wireless access points with six antennas, LCD displays, biometric sensors, and tablets. Type 3 :
Also known as 4-pair PoE, 4P PoE, PoE++, UPOE. Related standard: IEEE 802.3bt. Maximum
power to port: 60W. PoE Type 3 uses all four pairs in a copper cable. Currently in development
with IEEE 802.3bt
Type 3. It provides 60W of DC power to each PoE port (up to 51W of power for each device).
PoE Type 3 can support devices such as videoconferencing system components and building
management devices.
Type 4: higher-power PoE. Related standard: IEEE 802.3bt. Maximum power to port: 100W.
Growing power requirements of network devices are pushing the need for higher power
delivered through network cabling – which is where PoE Type 4 comes into play. It provides up
to 100W of DC power to each PoE port (up to 71W of power for each device). PoE Type 4 can
support devices such as laptops and TVs.
PoE Classes PoE Classification is where the PSE detects the PD’s power requirements by using
Physical Layer Classification or LLDP.
The IEEE 802.3bt Communication four-pair operation. Additional clauses were added, defining
the following:
This means only single-port PSEs should normally be used when PDs are deployed outdoors. In
summary, the PD-PSE environment is one of these three combinations:
1. PoE Source is indoor, PD is indoor (Env. A)
2. PoE Source is indoor, PD is outdoor (Env. B)
3. PoE Source is outdoor, PD is outdoor (Env. B)
Option 3 is the most challenging environment since both the PD and PSE are installed outdoors.
Caution: The switch is an indoor device. If it is to be used with outdoor devices such as outdoor
IP cameras or outdoor Wi-Fi APs, then you are strongly suggested to install a surge protector or
surge suppressor to protect the switch. The switch is compliant with 802.3at in Environment A
when using an isolated power supply. For 802.3at Environment B applications, i.e. building to
building, copper to copper endpoint connections: 1) use an Ethernet network isolator module
(PoE disabled), or 2) use mid-span injector(s) between this switch’s PSE port and link partner PD
port.
Mode A vs. Mode B Alternative A, also known as Mode A, uses the data pairs of an Ethernet
link to deliver power. Data Pairs include pins 1,2 and 3,6. PSEs using Mode A supply a positive
voltage to pins 1 and 2. Alternative B, also known as Mode B, uses the spare pairs to deliver
power. Spare Pairs include pins 4,5 and 7,8.
802.3af/at Standard “compliant” vs "compatible" PDs
Knowing the difference between PoE "compliant" devices and "compatible" devices can help
avoid interoperability and connectivity issues. Compliant and compatible PoE devices are not
held to the same
802.3af/at standard: • 802.3af/at “compliant” PDs fulfill the IEEE strict requirement to support
both Mode A and Mode B power modes.
802.3af/at "compatible" PDs typically can provide power using only Mode B.
Typical PD Power Requirements
• 1.8 Watts: (Class 1 Powered Device (0.44 Watts - 3.84 Watts).
• 13W: IP Camera, VoIP Phone, Wireless Access Point, Networked Audio.
• 30W: IP Telephone, WiMAX Access Point, PTZ Camera, Remote Computer Terminal.
• 60W : Door Access System, Video Phone, Thin Client.
• 100W: Digital Signage Display, Point-of-Sale System, LCD TV, Computer Monitor. • 200W:
Larger TV, Larger Display, Larger Monitor, Laptop. After eliminating basic network factors, ask
your PD vendor for the PD’s power supply mode and polarities supported and exact power
consumption.
Calculate PoE Power Budget To calculate how many 802.3at devices the unit supports, divide
the Total PoE Budget (130 Watts) by 30 Watts. To calculate the maximum number of 802.3af
devices, divide the Total PoE Budget (130 Watts) by 15.4 Watts.
Mixing POE and Non-POE Devices You can mix POE and non-POE devices on the same POE
switch (i.e., you can put PCs on the same POE switch as a SIP phone or a VOIP phone). The PSE
(your switch) will only send power if requested by the PD.
Power over Ethernet over 4 Pairs (IEEE 802.3bt) (See IEEE 802.3, Clause 145.)

802.3, 145.2.4. The PSE Alternative A and Alternative B connections are referred to as Mode A
and Mode B, respectively, at the PD.
Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE): A DTE or midspan device that provides power to a single link
section which may also carry data.

the PSE shall be classified as a Limited Power Source in accordance with IEC 60950-1 or IEC
62368-1
Annex Q. Equipment shall comply with all applicable local and national codes related to safety.
Network Safety This subclause sets forth a number of recommendations and guidelines related
to safety concerns. The list is neither complete nor does it address all possible safety issues. The
designer is urged to consult the relevant local, national, and international safety regulations to
verify compliance with the appropriate requirements. LAN cabling systems described in this
clause are subject to at least four direct electrical safety hazards during their installation and
use. These hazards are as follows:
a) Direct contact between LAN components and power, lighting, or communications circuits.
b) Static charge buildup on LAN cabling and components.
c) High-energy transients coupled onto the LAN cabling system.
d) Voltage potential differences between safety grounds to which various LAN components are
connected.
Such safety hazards should be avoided or appropriately protected for proper network
installation and performance. In addition to provisions for proper handling of these conditions
in an operational system, special measures should be taken to verify that the intended safety
features are not negated during installation of a new network or during modification of an
existing network.
Patch Panel Considerations It is possible that the current carrying capability of a cabling cross-
connect may be exceeded by a PSE. The designer should consult the manufacturer’s
specifications to verify compliance with the appropriate requirements.
Electromagnetic Emissions The PD and PSE powered cabling link shall comply with applicable
local and national codes for the limitation of electromagnetic interference.
Temperature and Humidity The PD and PSE powered cabling link segment is expected to
operate over a reasonable range of environmental conditions related to temperature, humidity,
and physical handling. Specific requirements and values for these parameters are beyond the
scope of the standard.
Marking on Communication Component as per IEEE 803.3BT
Power over Ethernet over 4 Pairs (IEEE 802.3bt) It is recommended that the PSE or PD (and
supporting documentation) be labeled in a manner visible to the user with at least the following
parameters:
a) Power classification and power level in terms of maximum current drain over the operating
voltage range, 36 V to 57 V, applies for PD only.
b) Port type (e.g., 100BASE-TX, TIA Category, or ISO Class).
c) Any applicable safety warnings.
d) “PSE” or “PD” as appropriate.
e) Indicate “single-signature PD” or “dual-signature PD” as appropriate.
f) Type (e.g., “Type 3” or “Type 4”).

One of the greatest challenges in modern networking is spanning large distances while staying within
a budget. Unfortunately, cheap hardware usually fails to accommodate longer ranges or succumbs to
harsh outdoor environments. That forces you into more expensive technologies, like fiber optics, which
may not be affordable.

For Wi-Fi communication to reach spans further than the IEEE 802.11b/g/n standard of a few hundred
feet, point-to-point wireless bridging could be the perfect solution you seek. Bridging helps networks
transmit across miles using traditional Wi-Fi, cuts installation costs by orders of magnitude, and offers
better performance than many competing solutions. Take a minute to explore point-to-point wireless
bridging and all that it offers. You might have found the best way to solve your networking challenges.
