General The emergency float system (see figure 802-1) permits ditching even rough sea conditions. The system comprises four floats, two on each side, which are mounted on the skids. The pressurized air for the floats is supplied from a compressed air bottle on the RH fuselage side. The bottle charge can be checked by the associated pressure gauge. The bottle is discharged via a solenoid valve and the pressure line system. Boarding steps, and straps between boarding steps and skid tubes, are Provided to stabilize the floats when inflated. 2. Electrical system The system is supplied with 28V DC power from bus FLT ESS 1 via circuit breakers in the overhead console. Upon setting the EMER FLOATS toggle switch (slanted portion of the instrument panel) to position ARMED, the system is operational. Thi state is indicated by the green indicator light ARMING ON, which is located on the LH side of the toggle switch. When operating the secured toggle switch EMER FLOATS FILL on the pilot or co-pilot collective stick, the solenoid valve opens and the floats are inflated within 4 seconds. CHAPTER 802 Rev. 2 Page 3 (BKE802-A-2) MBB HELICOPTERS MAINTENANCE MANUAL MBB - BK 117 B02 - 2 TROUBLESHOOTING - EMERGENCY FLOAT SYSTEM General - Refer to wiring diagram 802-1 of the Wiring Diagram Manual (WOM) for troubleshooting. - Check all electrical connectors for secure fit. - Push the appropiate circuit breaker and check the ARMING ON indicator light with the ANN PNL TEST switch. - Troubleshooting is accomplished with an external power unit connected to the helicopter electrical system, or using the onboard battery (refer to chapter 92). Ensure that bus FLT ESS 1 is supplied with electrical power. Circuit breaker EMER FLOATS must be pushed and toggle switch EMER FLOATS must be in position ARMED. Inspect cylinder support assy (21, figure 802-1) for cracks, mechanical damage, corrosion, damaged surface protection and secure fit. a. Discard clamping devices of cylinder support if cracks and mechanical damage are evident. b. Polish out mechanical damage and corrosion on suppor, using polishing cloth (400). Max. permissible depth of damage on the entire support is: 0.1 mm. c. Touch up damaged surface protection atter application of chemical conversion material (CM 316) with two-component zinc chromate primer (CM 456) and single-layer lacquer (CM 407). d. Tighten loose bolt connections. For specified torque refer to figure 802-1. e. Check lockwiring of dummy plugs. Re-tighten and safety with lockwire, as necessary. 2. Inspect cylinder (22) for mechanical damage, secure fit and correct charge (charge indication must be within the GO-area). a. If mechanical damage is evident send cylinder to manufacturer for further investigation. b. If lockwiring on clamping devices is detective or missing, check for correct torque (3-4 Nm) and safety with new lockwire. . Ifthe charge indication is within the NO GO-area, check cylinder with valve and pressure gage in accordance with manufacturer documentation CMM 25-65-07. 3. Inspect pressure hose assemblies for damage, security and connections for secure fit. ‘a. Discard affected portion of hose assy if damage is evident (chafe marks, nicks, dents and cracks). b. If hardware is loose or missing (clamps, sctews etc.), retighten or renew as necessary. ¢. Tighten loose connections (for specified torque refer to manufacturer documentation CMM 25-65-07). CHAPTER 802 Page 8 Rev. 1 MBB HELICOPTERS MAINTENANCE MANUAL MBB - BK 117 Inspect electrical wiring for damage and correct connection. Discard damaged wires. 5. Inspect straps for damage, security and strain a. Discard damaged strap. b. If hardware is loose or missing (shackles, eyebolts), re-tighten or renew, as necessary. ¢. If straps are slack, check installation position of boarding steps as shown in figure 802-1 and correct, as necessary. Discard slack straps if installation position is correct. 6. Inspect float packs for damage and security. a. Replace missing and damaged lacing of cover. b. Tighten or replace fasteners if loose or missing. Inspect extended skids (skid tubes, skid shoes, clamping rings and skid protectors) with floats installed, in accordance with chapter 51 for con- dition. 8. Inspect boarding steps for security, deformation and cracks at fittings and clamps. a. Discard boarding step if deformed. b. Discard affected part if cracks are evident. ¢. Tighten loose screw connections of fittings (torque: 6-6.5 Nm). If tightening clamp is loose, correct the installation position of the boarding step and retighten clamp assy (torque: 8-10 Nm). 9. If specified in the inspection schedule, remove floats in the packed condition from skids and inspect those areas on skids usually covered by floats, and the wiring in accordance with step 3. and 7..
