841 - 1 DESCRIPTION - ENGINE AIR CLEANER

1. General

The e n g i n e a i r c l e a n e r s e p a r a t e s s o l i d p a r t i c l e s , such a s sand and d u s t ,


from t h e engine i n t a k e a i r , t h u s p r o t e c t i n g e n g i n e p a r t s , e s p e c i a l l y t h e
compressor, from e r o s i o n . The s e p a r a t e d contaminants a r e sucked o u t of
t h e a i r c l e a n e r housing and d i s c h a r g e d overboard.

The a i r c l e a n e r system e s s e n t i a l l y c o n s i s t s o f :
- housing with bypass door and scavenge o u t l e t s
- 750 s e p a r a t o r t u b e s
- engine bleed a i r tapping l i n e s
3. Operation
Contaminated a i r drawn i n d u r i n g f l i g h t o p e r a t i o n i s d i r e c t e d through t h e
750 s e p a r a t o r t u b e s t o t h e e n g i n e s . A s t h e a i r flows through t h e
s e p a r a t o r t u b e p a n e l s , it i s made t o swirl by t h e f i x e d v o r t e x g e n e r a t o r s
i n t h e t u b e s , c a u s i n g t h e s o l i d p a r t i c l e s t o be thrown by c e n t r i f u g a l
f o r c e r a d i a l l y outward a g a i n s t t h e t u b e i n n e r w a l l s .
These p a r t i c l e s t h e n c o l l e c t i n a low p r e s s u r e a r e a a t t h e bottom of t h e
wedgg-shaped c l e a n e r housing, from where t h e y a r e e j e c t e d overboard
through t h e two scavenge o u t l e t s by t h e low pressure-inducing engine
bleed a i r .
I f t h e engine a i r c l e a n e r i s n o t r e q u i r e d , t h e bypass door on t h e f r o n t
of t h e c l e a n e r housing can b e opened t o a l l o w d i r e c t flow of a i r t o t h e
engines.
Configuration I:
Bypass door opened by Bowden c a b l e .
Configuration 11:
Bypass door opened by a c t u a t o r .
S h u t t i n g o f f t h e a i r c l e a n e r system by opening t h e bypass door does n o t
simultaneously c u t o f f t h e flow of e n g i n e b l e e d a i r .

General
The following p r e l i m i n a r y o p e r a t i o n s apply t o c o n f i g u r a t i o n I1 only:
- r e f e r t o w i r i n g diagram 841-1 i n t h e Wiring Diagram Manual (WDM)
- Check f o r t i g h t e l e c t r i c a l connection t o a c t u a t o r .
- Check mechanical f u n c t i o n i n g of s w i t c h e s and c i r c u i t b r e a k e r s .
- Connect e x t e r n a l power u n i t (EPU). B a t t e r y s w i t c h on instrument p a n e l i n
p o s i t i o n BATT OFFIEPU ON.
- Press c i r c u i t b r e a k e r 1KC.

841 - 4 INSPECTION FOR CONDITION - ENGINE A I R CLEANER

1. I n s p e c t a i r c l e a n e r housing and bypass door f o r mechanical damage,


c o r r o s i o n and t i g h t i n s t a l l a t i o n .

a. Replace cracked p a r t s .

b. P o l i s h out corroded a r e a s with 400 g r i t a b r a s i v e c l o t h and r e s t o r e


surface protection.
C. Tighten l o o s e screws.

d. Apply g r e a s e (CM 101) t o bypass door mounting.


2. I n s p e c t s e p a r a t o r t u b e s f o r clogging and contamination. I f e i t h e r
clogging o r contamination i s p r e s e n t , remove t h e c l e a n e r p a n e l and r i n s e
t h e separator tubes.

3. I f more t h a n approx. 5% of t h e t u b e s i n a c l e a n e r panel a r e damaged,


replace cleaner panel.
4. I n s p e c t b l e e d a i r t u b e s and hoses, check valves, and t u b e and hose
connections f o r c o n d i t i o n . Repair l e a k s and r e p l a c e damaged p a r t s .

5. Configuration I only:
I n s p e c t ~ o w d e nc a b l e and bypass door f o r u n r e s t r i c t e d movement.

Configuration I1 only:
I n s p e c t e l e c t r i c a l w i r i n g f o r t i g h t i n s t a l l a t i o n and c h a f e marks. Secure
l o o s e wires, and r e p l a c e chafed w i r e s .

841 - 5 FUNCTIONAL CHECK - ENGINE A I R CLEANER


1. Connect e x t e r n a l power supply. S e t switch 16P t o BAT OFFIEPU ON.

2. Push i n c i r c u i t b r e a k e r SAND F I L T 1KC.


3. Push switch SAND FILTER 2KC on overhead console forward; t h e bypass door
w i l l Open and t h e a c t u a t o r w i l l a u t o m a t i c a l l y switch o f f i n t h e end
p o s i t i o n . Perform v i s u a l check.

4. Push switch SAND FILTER 2KC on overhead console backward; t h e bypass door
w i l l c l o s e and t h e a c t u a t o r w i l l a u t o m a t i c a l l y switch o f f i n t h e end
p o s i t i o n . Pcrform v i s u a l check.

5. Pul1 out c i r c u i t b r e a k e r and disconnect e x t e r n a l power supply from t h e


helicopter.

841 - 6 REMOVAL - ENGINE AIR CLEANER
1. Remove engine cowling.
2. Disconnect tubes (5, 6, fig. 841-3) at tee fitting (4) in the
transmission compartment; unscrew tee fitting.

NOTE Perform step 3. only if removal of bleed line is


not required.

3. Screw plug (5, fig. 814-1) in hose ( 7 ) and secure to angle (4) with
washer (3) and castellated nut (1); safety with cotter pin (2).

4. Unscrew and remove air cleaner panels (4, fig. 841-4).


5. Configuration I:
Disconnect Bowden cable from bypass door mechanism.
Configuration 11:
Disconnect electrical lead from actuator.
6. Remove screws (10) and take off air cleaner housing (2).
7. If required, remove bleed air system as follows:
a. At firewall Passage,. disconnect check valves (4, fig. 841-6) from
line fittings (9) and firewall fitting (1).
b. Unscrew fittings (7) and remove tubes (6). Plug Open engine ports.
C. Remove hose clamps and remove hose (2).
d. Remove firewall fitting ( I ) .
841 - 7 INSTALLATION - ENGINE AIR CLEANER
1. Remove engine cowling.
2. Install bleed air system as follows:
a. Install hose (2, fig. 841-6) with clamps.
b. Install firewall fitting (1) and insert line manifold; seal gap
between them with sealing compound (CM 633).
C. Connect tubes (6) to engines using fittings (7).
d. Connect check valves (4) to line fittings (9); arrows must point in
direction of flow.
3. Fasten air cleaner housing (2, fig. 841-4) to mounting support (1) on
roof with screws (10).
4. Configuration I:
Connect Bowden cable to bypass door mechanism.
Configuration 11:
Connect electrical lead to actuator.

5. Insert air cleaner paneis (4) in. air cleaner housing and screw up
tightly .
6. Connect tubes (5, 6, fig. 841-3) to tee fitting (4) in transmission
compartment.
7. Install engine cowling.
