64 - 1 DESCRIPTION - FIREWALLS
The firewal-1s ( f i g . 64-1 t h r u 64-4) s e p a r a t e both engine compartments and t h e
transmission compartment from each o t h e r . They i s o l a t e t h e engines from t h e
rest of t h e h e l i c o p t e r and prevent flames from spreading i n t h e event of an
engine f i r e . The f i r e w a l l s a r e made of t i t a n i u m sheetmetal with asbestos
s e a l s bonded t o t h e edges and a r e secured t o each o t h e r and t o t h e engine
deck with quick r e l e a s e f a s t e n e r s .

64 - 2 INSPECTION FOR CONDITION - FIREWALLS


1. Inspect f i r e w a l l s ( f i g . 64-1 t h r u 64-4) f o r cracks, broken spotwelds,
loose r i v e t s and deformation. Refer t o para 64-3 f o r r e p a i r procedure.

2. Check quick r e l e a s e f a s t e n e r s f o r s e c u r i t y o f . i n s t a l l a t i o n and damage. I f


loose o r damaged, r e p l a c e according t o Chapter 02.

3. Check g l a s s f i b e r s e a l s s k i r t i n g t h e f i r e w a l l s f o r evidence of damage and


s e p a r a t i o n . Replace any damaged s e a l s and rebond detached ones i n accord-
ance with Para 64-3.

4. Check engine i n t a k e bellows (3 and 4 ) f o r cracks and i n s p e c t clamps (13)


for security.
a. Replace t o r n bellows.
b. Tighten loose clamps.

5. Inspect d r i v e s h a f t casings (5 and 6) f o r cracks, breaks, and evidence of


damage t o t h e f i r e r e t a r d a n t p a i n t c o a t i n g . Repair casings i n accordance
with REM 201. Touch up damaged f i r e r e t a r d a n t p a i n t coating a s described
i n Chapter 22.

64 - 3 REPAIR - FIREWALLS

NOTE Repair t h e f i r e w a l l s according t o FAA AC 43.13-lA, AIRCRAFT


INSPECTION AND REPAIR and REM 201. Use LN9178 o r LN9179 r i v e t s .

1. Drill out broken spotwelds and r e p l a c e with a p p r o p r i a t e l y s i z e d r i v e t s .

2. Restore contour of deformed f i r e w a l l s using p l a s t i c harnmer and s u i t a b l e


dressing tools.

3. Rebond separated g l a s s f a b r i c s e a l s w i t h cement (CM 672) o r s i l i c o n e


adhesive (CM 673) .

4. S t o p - d r i l l (3 mm d i a . ) cracks a t both ends and rework cracks a s necessary


t o e l i m i n a t e chafing.

a. Fabricate doubler from t i t a n i u m s h e e t of next gage t h i c k n e s s t o Cover


damaged a r e a .

b. Brush mating s u r f a c e of doubler with s e a l i n g compound (CM 635)


and r i v e t t o damaged a r e a of f i r e w a l l .
64 - 4 Removal - firewalls

1. Remove engine and transmission cowlings ( r e f e r t o Chapter 2 2 ) .

2. Remove forward f i r e w a l l s (1 and 2, f i g s . 64-1 t h r u 64-4) :

CAUTION TAKE CARE NOT T0 DAMAGE THE DRIVE SHAFTS WHEN REMOVING THE
FIREWALLS.

NOTE For configuration I1 f i r e w a l l s , remove d r i v e s h a f t s according


t o procedure i n Chapter 11. For c o n f i g u r a t i o n I, 111, I V
f i r e w a l l s , removal of t h e d r i v e s h a f t s i s required only when
t h e engine i n t a k e bellows a r e rernoved.
a. I f required, remove d r i v e s h a f t i n accordance with Chapter 11.
b. Disconnect N2 T e l e f l e x cable by opening t h e quick-disconnect a t l e f t
forward f i r e w a l l (2) and remove f l a n g e s from f i r e w a l l Passage ( 8 ) .
Repeat t h i s procedure on t h e r i g h t f i r e w a l l (1) of configuration I1
( f i g . 64-2).
C. Release t h e quick r e l e a s e f a s t e n e r s a s necessary.
d. I f i n s t a l l e d , remove t h e upper forward f i r e w a l l (15, f i g s . 64-1 and
64-4) and upper p l a t e ( 1 4 ) .
e. I f required, unscrew clamps (13) and remove t h e r i g h t and l e f t d r i v e
s h a f t casings ( 5 and 6) .
f. Remove t h e r i g h t and l e f t forward f i r e w a l l s (1 and 2 ) , r i g h t and l e f t
d r i v e s h a f t casings (5 and 6 ) and, f o r c o n f i g u r a t i o n I, I11 and I V
f i r e w a l l s , remove bellows ( 3 and 4 ) .

NOTE Steps g. t h r u i . apply t o c o n f i g u r a t i o n I, I11 and I V


firewalls.
g. Unscrew clamps (13, f i g . 64-2) and remove r i g h t and l e f t d r i v e s h a f t
c a s i n g s ( 5 and 6 ) .

h. I f required, remove t h e d r i v e s h a f t s according t o Chapter 11.

i. Disconnect t h e quick-disconnect of t h e N2 T e l e f l e x c a b l e b e f o r e
removing t h e r i g h t bellows.

j. Release t h e quick r e l e a s e f a s t e n e r s of t h e configuration I1 f i r e w a l l ,


and remove engine i n t a k e bellows ( 3 and 4 ) .

3. Remove c e n t e r f i r e w a l l (9, f i g s . 64-1 t h r u 64-4) a s follows:

a. Release t h e quick r e l e a s e f a s t e n e r s s e c u r i n g t h e t a i l r o t o r d r i v e
s h a f t s h i e l d (10) t o t h e c e n t e r f i r e w a l l s and remove t h e s h i e l d .

b. Release quick r e l e a s e f a s t e n e r s t h a t s e c u r e t h e c e n t e r f i r e w a l l ( 9 )
and c a r e f u l l y remove c e n t e r f i r e w a l l .
4. Remove r i g h t and l e f t a f t f i r e w a l l s (11 and 12, f i g s . 64-1 t h r u 64-4) by
r e l e a s i n g t h e quick r e l e a s e f a s t e n e r s .

64 - 5 Installation - firewalls
1. I n s t a l l r i g h t and l e f t forward f i r e w a l l s (1 and 2, f i g s . 64-1 t h r u 64-4)
a s follows:

a. I n s t a l l r i g h t and l e f t forward f i r e w a l l s (1 and 2 ) , r i g h t and l e f t


d r i v e s h a f t casings (5 and 6) and, f o r c o n f i g u r a t i o n I, I11 and I V
f i r e w a l l s , i n s t a l l bellows ( 3 and 4 ) ; secure quick r e l e a s e f a s t e n e r s .

b. I f required, i n s t a l l t h e d r i v e s h a f t s and d r i v e s h a f t casings ( 5 and


6) according t o Chapter 11.
C. I n s t a l l f l a n g e s on l e f t f i r e w a l l Passage ( 8 ) f o r N2 Teleflex cable
and c l o s e quick-disconnect.

a. Carefully l o c a t e c e n t e r f i r e w a l l ( 9 ) i n p o s i t i o n and secure it t o t h e


engine deck and forward and a f t f i r e w a l l s with quick r e l e a s e f a s t e -
ners .
b. Secure t a i l r o t o r d r i v e s h a f t s h i e l d ( 1 0 ) t o t h e c e n t e r wall with
quick r e l e a s e f a s t e n e r s .

3. I n s t a l l r i g h t and l e f t a f t f i r e w a l l s (11 and 12, f i g s . 64-1 t h r u 64-4)


with quick r e l e a s e f a s t e n e r s .

4. Inspect a l l f i r e w a l l s f o r s e c u r i t y of i n s t a l l a t i o n .

5. I n s t a l l engine and transmission cowlings ( r e f e r t o Chapter 2 2 ) .

CAUT I O N CHECK T A I L ROTOR DRIVE SHAFT FOR FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT AT


PLACES WHERE I T PASSES THROUGH THE FIREWALLS.
MINIMUM CLEARANCE OF 2.5 MM IS REQUIRED BETWEEN SHAFT AND
FIREWALLS.
