838 - 1 DESCRIPTION - HIGH LANDING GEAR

1. General

The high landing gear i s a t u b u l a r s k i d g e a r l i k e t h e standard version.


The increased height of i t s c r o s s tubes enables equipment t o be i n s t a l l e d
on t h e underside of t h e fuselage. The c r o s s tubes w i l l bend and regain
t h e i r o r i g i n a l shape a t a r a t e of descent of approx. lmlsec. Landings a t
higher r a t e s of descent w i l l produce permanent crosstube spread.

2 . Description

The high landing gear e s s e n t i a l l y c o n s i s t s of two aluminum crosstubes


which run l a t e r a l l y through t h e underside of t h e fuselage a t frames 4 and
9, and two s k i d tubes, one on each s i d e of t h e fuselage and a t t a c h e d t o
t h e ends of t h e crosstubes by s k i d shoes and clamps.
The crosstubes a r e f i x e d i n mounts on t h e fuselage by means of pivoted
bearing r i n g s and c o n i c a l elastomer bushings with i n t e g r a t e d clamps.
Skid p r o t e c t i o n p l a t e s a r e i n s t a l l e d on t h e underside of t h e s k i d tubes t o
absorb wear. The forward ends of t h e s k i d tubes a r e f i l l e d with
polyurethane foam and s e a l e d with GRP, and t h e a f t ends f i t t e d with caps.
Dual-tread s t e p s a r e mounted on each s i d e of t h e f r o n t crosstubes of
configuration I (see f i g . 838-6) and configuration I1 and a l s o on each
s i d e of t h e r e a r crosstube of configuration 11.
Provisions a r e made on t h e a f t end of t h e s k i d tubes f o r i n s t a l l i n g ground
handling wheels.

1. Check l a n d i n g g e a r i n s t a l l a t i o n f o r dimensional accuracy i n t h e Y and Z


axes ( r e f e r t o f i g . 838-1).

2 . I n s p e c t c r o s s t u b e s f o r deformation and o t h e r s i g n s of damage. Check f o r
c r o s s t u b e deformation by measuring between t h e u n d e r s i d e of t h e f u s e l a g e
o r f u s e l a g e mounted equipment and t h e underside of t h e s k i d t u b e s w i t h no
weight on t h e s k i d s (see f i g . 838-2)

I f t h e ground c l e a r a n c e i s less t h a n 650 mm o r 300 mm, according t o


c o n f i g u r a t i o n , r e p l a c e a f f e c t e d c r o s s t u b e s ( r e f e r t o p a r a s 838-4 and
838-5).
Remove damage, such a s s c r a t c h e s and n i c k s , w i t h a b r a s i v e c l o t h (180 g r i t
o r f i n e r ) only i f t h e y have s h a r p edges, t h e n b l e n d o u t t o a t r a n s i t i o n
r a d i u s of approx. 20 mm. See f i g . 838-3 f o r damage limits.

Touch up damaged s u r f a c e p r o t e c t i o n a s f o l l o w s :
P o l i s h o u t a f f e c t e d a r e a s down t o b a r e meta1 u s i n g 360 g r i t a b r a s i v e
c l o t h , and c l e a n with d e g r e a s i n g agent (CM 2 0 9 ) .
Apply two-component z i n c chromate primer (CM 417) o r two-component wash
primer (CM 423) and allow t o d r y . Apply s i n g l e - l a y e r l a c q u e r (CM 407) o r
PUR t o p c o a t (CM 4 1 6 ) and allow t o d r y .

3 . V i s u a l l y i n s p e c t s k i d s f o r c r a c k s , deformation and mechanical damage.

Mechanical damage ( s c r a t c h e s and n i c k s ) i s a c c e p t a b l e t o a depth of up t o


* 0.5 mm on 30% of t h e t o t a l s u r f a c e a r e a of t h e t o p side of t h e s k i d t u b e
* and t o a depth of up t o 1 . 0 mm on 30% of t h e t o t a l s u r f a c e a r e a of t h e
* bottom side of t h e skid t u b e . Dents which do n o t exceed 5 mm i n depth and
* 30 mm i n diameter a r e a c c e p t a b l e . Blend o u t sharp-edged s c r a t c h e s and
* n i c k s t o a t r a n s i t i o n r a d i u s of approx. 20 mm, u s i n g 400 g r i t a b r a s i v e
* c l o t h . For damaged s u r f a c e p r o t e c t i o n touch-up procedure, r e f e r t o s t e p 2

* I f s k i d s e x h i b i t cracks, deformation o r mechanical damage i n e x c e s s of t h e
* above l i m i t s , r e p l a c e them.
Remove screws (10, f i g . 838-6) from r i v e t n u t s (24) and d e t a c h s k i d
p r o t e c t i o n p l a t e s ( 4 ) . Remove screws (11) and t a b washer ( 1 2 ) . Pry Open
clamp ( 9 ) and remove s k i d t u b e s (1).

4. V i s u a l l y i n s p e c t s k i d p r o t e c t i o n p l a t e s ( 4 , 5, f i g . 838-6) f o r evidence of
e x c e s s i v e wear.
Damage i s p e r m i s s i b l e provided s k i d t u b e p r o t e c t i o n i s n o t impaired.
The s k i d p r o t e c t i o n p l a t e s a r e removed by unscrewing screws ( 1 0 ) .

5. I n s p e c t clamps ( 9 ) f o r t i g h t i n s t a l l a t i o n and damaged s u r f a c e p r o t e c t i o n .


S u r f a c e damage such a s s c r a t c h e s and n i c k s , a r e p e r m i s s i b l e t o a d e p t h of
0.2 mm. Surface b l e n d i n g u s i n g a b r a s i v e c l o t h i s o n l y r e q u i r e d i n t h e
e v e n t of high m e t a l o r s h a r p edges. Repair c r a c k s i n welded a r e a s by
rewelding.
I f clamps a r e l o o s e , reset s k i d h b e s t o dimensions shown i n f i g . 838-4.
For screw t o r q u e l o a d s , See f i g . 838-6.
Touch up damaged s u r f a c e p r o t e c t i o n a s follows:
Remove l o o s e p a i n t from a f f e c t e d a r e a s with 360 g r i t a b r a s i v e c l o t h and
c l e a n with d e g r e a s i n g a g e n t (CM 2 0 9 ) . Apply two-component z i n c chromate
primer (CM 423) and a l l o w t o d r y .
Apply s i n g l e - l a y e r l a c q u e r (CM 407) and allow t o d r y .

6. I n s p e c t s k i d shoes f o r damaged s u r f a c e p r o t e c t i o n and t i g h t i n s t a l l a t i o n


according t o i n s p e c t i o n c r i t e r i a i n s t e p 5 . P e r m i s s i b l e d e p t h of damage i s
0 . 3 rnm. For s k i d shoe removal and i n s t a l l a t i o n procedures, r e f e r t o p a r a s
838-4 and 838-5.
7 . I n s p e c t set screw r i n g s f o r t i g h t i n s t a l l a t i o n and evidence of damage.
Replace set screw r i n g i f rubber i s cracked o r has s e p a r a t e d from t h e
m e t a l . Realign l o o s e set screw r i n g s and t o r q u e l o a d screws t o v a l u e s
shown i n f i g . 838-7. For removal and i n s t a l l a t i o n procedures, r e f e r t o
p a r a s 838-4 and 838-5.

NOTE Bearing r i n g s and set screw r i n g s a r e o n l y removed when


n e c e s s i t a t e d by damage r e p a i r s t o b e a r i n g r i n g s ,
o r when i n s p e c t i o n of c l o s e - t o l e r a n c e screw s e a t i n t h e set
screw r i n g s r e v e a l s unacceptable p l a y ( c a s t e l l a t e d nut
r o t a t e s w i t h c l o s e - t o l e r a n c e screw) .

8 . I n s p e c t b e a r i n g r i n g s f o r c r a c k s , damaged s u r f a c e p r o t e c t i o n , and
dimensional accuracy.
I f v i s u a l i n s p e c t i o n with a magnifying g l a s s g i v e s reason t o s u s p e c t
presence of c r a c k s , perform a p e n e t r a n t i n s p e c t i o n p e r MIL-STD-6866.
Replace cracked b e a r i n g r i n g s a s f o l l o w s : Unscrew and remove a t t a c h i n g
hardware (11, 12, 13, 1 4 , 15, f i g . 838-7) and remove b e a r i n g r i n g ( 1 0 ) . To
i n s t a l l t h e b e a r i n g r i n g , p o s i t i o n b e a r i n g r i n g i n l a n d i n g g e a r mounting
on frame, and i n s e r t c l o s e - t o l e r a n c e screw (11) from i n s i d e t h e b e a r i n g
r i n g . I n s t a l l s t e p p e d washer (13) and n u t (12) on c l o s e - t o l e r a n c e screw
and t o r q u e nut t o v a l u e shown i n f i g . 838-7, t h e n s e c u r e with c o t t e r p i n
(15) .

Blend r e p a i r s u r f a c e damage, such a s s c r a t c h e s and n i c k s , n o t deeper


0.3 mm, u s i n g 180 g r i t o r f i n e r a b r a s i v e c l o t h .
Check bore f o r dimensional accuracy. I f bore diameter exceeds 15.1 mm,
replace bearing ring.
Touch up damaged s u r f a c e p r o t e c t i o n , b u t n o t t h e l a c q u e r c o a t i n g ,
according t o s t e p 2 . Apply l a c q u e r c o a t i n g t o match c o l o r of f u s e l a g e .

9. I n s p e c t c l o s e - t o l e r a n c e screws f o r wear, and r e p l a c e i f d i a m e t e r i s less


t h a n 14.9 mm.

10. I n s p e c t bushings f o r wear, and r e p l a c e i f diameter i s less t h a n 15.1 mm.

838 - 4 REMOVAL - HIGH LANDING GEAR

1. Raise h e l i c o p t e r approx. 1.20 meters u s i n g h o i s t .

2. Unscrew and remove a t t a c h i n g hardware (17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, f i g .
838-6) and d e t a c h s k i d t u b e s (1) and assembled p a r t s .

3. Remove c o c k p i t s t e p s (7 and 8, p a i r e d ) on c r o s s t u b e a s f o l l o w s :
From e i t h e r s t e p (7 o r 8 ) , remove p l u g (16) and n u t (15) from t h e
10-mrn-long t h r e a d e d end of t h e common s u p p o r t rod (13) and remove t h e
s t e p . Remove t h e o t h e r s t e p by p u l l i n g t h e support rod o u t through t h e
crosstube.
4 . Unscrew and remove necked-down b o l t s (16, f i g . 838-7) from set screw r i n g s
( 9 ) and remove t a b washers ( 1 7 ) . Detach bonding jumpers (22) and tabwasher
(20) by removing a t t a c h i n g hardware (18, 19, 21) . P u l 1 set screw r i n g s o f f
c r o s s t u b e u s i n g s l i d i n g agent (CM 710) t o a i d removal.

5. Guide c r o s s t u b e s ( 2 ) o u t through frame 4 o r 9, a s a p p l i c a b l e , and through


frame-mounted b e a r i n g r i n g s ( 1 0 ) , and remove from h e l i c o p e r .

1. Guide c r o s s t u b e s (2, f i g . 838-7) i n through frame 4 o r 9, a s a p p l i c a b l e ,


and through t h e frame-mounted b e a r i n g r i n g s ( 1 0 ) .
2 . I n s t a l l Set screw r i n g s ( 9 ) on c r o s s t u b e s u s i n g s l i d i n g agent (CM 7 1 0 ) ,
and slide them along t h e c r o s s t u b e s and i n t o t h e b e a r i n g r i n g s ( 1 0 ) .
3. I n s t a l l bonding jumpers (22) and t a b washers (20) and s e c u r e with a t -
t a c h i n g hardware (18, 19, 20 and 2 1 ) . I n s t a l l necked-down b o l t s (16) and
tabwashers ( 1 7 ) and s e c u r e f i n g e r t i g h t .

4 . C e n t r a l i z e c r o s s t u b e s ( s e e f i g . 838-5) on t h e f u s e l a g e by s h i f t i n g them
back and f o r t h i n t h e frame-mounted b e a r i n g r i n g s u n t i l an e q u a l l e n g t h of
crosstube, measured a l o n g t h e t o p s u r f a c e of t h e c r o s s t u b e from t h e
inboard end of t h e b e a r i n g r i n g t o t h e end of t h e Cross tube, extends from
e i t h e r s i d e of t h e f u s e l a g e .

5 . Tighten and s e c u r e necked-down b o l t s ( 1 6 ) and apply c o r r o s i o n p r o t e c t i v e


l a c q u e r (CM 501) t o bonding t e r m i n a l s .

6. Mount assembled s k i d s (1) and s k i d shoes ( 3 ) on t h e ends of t h e c r o s s t u b e s


and i n s t a l l and t i g h t e n a t t a c h i n g hardware (17, 18, 19, 20, 22 and 23,
f i g . 838-6). Secure n u t s (20) and screws (22) with c o t t e r p i n s (21) and
t a b washers (23) r e s p e c t i v e l y . .

7 . I n s t a l l c o c k p i t s t e p s ( 7 and 8) a s follows:
With one s t e p a l r e a d y i n p l a c e on one end of t h e support rod ( 1 3 ) , i n s e r t
t h e o t h e r f r e e end through t h e bore i n t h e c r o s s t u b e and i n s t a l l t h e o t h e r
s t e p on i t . Tighten s t e p s a g a i n s t t h e c r o s s t u b e with washer ( 1 4 ) and nut
(15) and i n s t a l l p l u g ( 1 6 ) .
