842 - 1 DESCRIPTION - ENGINE A I R CLEANER

1. General

The engine a i r cleaner separates s o l i d p a r t i c l e s , such a s sand and dust,

from t h e engine i n t a k e a i r , t h u s p r o t e c t i n g engine p a r t s , e s p e c i a l l y t h e
compressor, from erosion. The separated contaminants a r e sucked out of t h e
a i r c l e a n e r housing and discharged overboard.

2 . Description

The a i r cleaner system e s s e n t i a l l y c o n s i s t s o f :

- housing with bypass door and scavenge o u t l e t s
- s e p a r a t o r tubes
- engine bleed a i r tapping l i n e s

3. Operation

Contminated a i r drawn i n during f l i g h t o p e r a t i o n i s d i r e c t e d through t h e

s e p a r a t o r tubes t o t h e engines. A s t h e a i r flows through t h e s e p a r a t o r
tube panels, it i s made t o swirl by t h e f i x e d vortex generators i n t h e
tubes, causing t h e s o l i d p a r t i c l e s t o be thrown by c e n t r i f u g a l f o r c e
r a d i a l l y outward acjainst t h e t u b e i n n e r w a l l s . These p a r t i c l e s then
c c i l e c t i n a low pressure a r e a a t t h e bottom of t h e wedge-shaped cleaner
housing, from where they a r e e j e c t e d overboard through two scavenge
o u t l e t s by t h e low pressure-inducing engine bleed a i r .
The bypass door f o r s h u t t i n g o f f t h e a i r c l e a n e r i s opened by means of an
a c t u a t o r . As t h e door Opens, a delayed a c t i o n valve i n t h e bleed a i r feed,
l i n e automatically c l o s e s a f t e r allowing time f o r t h e remaining
concaminants t o be discharged from t h e a i r c l e a n e r system. Therefore, when
t h e a i r cleaner i s shut o f f , t h e r e i s no l o s s of engine power from
continous bleed a i r tapping.
