Dear Colleague,
Welcome to the 2017 Annual Recurrent Training Programme for Flight Crew, this
year following your feedback we have once again reviewed the programme with
the aim of further strengthening and improving the standard of our safety
training. The programme has been developed jointly with flight ops and this year
we have added a new CPD module on Human Trafficking, to further enhance and
increase awareness.
The following booklet is designed to aid you in your preparation for this course.
This booklet will fully brief you on what to expect over the one day Flight Crew
Recurrent Course. Contained within the booklet is your training schedule, course
requirements, examination process, course overview and preparation workbook.
The workbook this year has been designed in the form of a mixed workbook and
question bank. All questions that will come up in the Recurrent Exam will be taken
from this booklet. While the workbook prepares you for the recurrent exam,
additional study may be required to prepare you for your practical training.
The new recurrent program and exams will commence from January 2017,
however some 2017 courses will be run in November and early December 2016 to
facilitate expiries, as a result it is vital that you know which course you are
attending.
The key to successfully completing the Annual Recurrent Training programme is
preparation; there will be no surprises over the day as everything that is expected
of you is detailed within this booklet.
We look forward to welcoming you back into training and if you need any
assistance either in the run up to or over the programme please do not hesitate
to contact one of the training team.
As always we appreciate your feedback on the new course as this will allow us to
further develop the 2018 program.

Kind regards,

Noel Houlihan
Safety Training Officer

Human Trafficking Training

This year our CPD module is on Human Trafficking. This is a major worldwide
issue and it is something which we want to raise awareness of amongst crew.
We are working with UK charity Hope for Justice in developing our course.
Hope for justice work with The DfT, The DoT, The Gardaí and various other
police forces across the UK and Ireland.

In order for you to actively participate in the discussion we recommend that

you visit the hope for justice site to help raise your awareness on what they do
and what Human Trafficking is all about.

Examination Process
When it comes to exams we know that the name itself sometimes strikes fear
amongst crew, we want to ensure that we can alleviate any fear from the
process by being open and transparent right from the start. This section details
the process so that you are fully aware of how it works.

Exams are mandatory under the regulations and must be completed as part of
the recurrent training programme, that said we want to make the exams as
stress free as possible. Preparation is key as there are no surprises, all
questions come from the question bank contained within this booklet.

Recurrent exams take the form of multiple choice papers and practical
assessment. If you have a requirement to be examined orally you should let
the training centre know in advance of your course so that the necessary
arrangements can be made.
All multiple choice exams carry a pass rate of 90%. To ensure consistency in the
marking of exams percentage marks will be assigned to each question. These
percentage marks will be visible on the exam paper so that you are fully aware
of the marking process.
As always, all exams will be supervised by an examiner rather than your
instructor. The examiner is there solely to conduct and correct the exam. They
cannot give you the answers but if you are struggling with a question they will
of course provide clarification. After the exam is completed your results will be
given back to your instructor who will issue them to you.
During practical exercises, Instructors will assess trainees to ensure they can
demonstrate their skills in a confident manner. The assessment is based on
how the prescribed procedures are implemented, the Instructor will base their
assessment on guidance provided to them in the form of an assessment form.
If during a practical assessment the required standard is not met, the exercise
will be stopped and your instructor will give guidance and direction prior to
repeating the assessment
Important Information: If you have special requirements when it comes to
exams then these can be facilitated. Please notify the Training Academy in
advance of your course via mail at trainingacademyqueries@aerlingus.com or
on 01 886 2901/2902 to ensure that your requirements are fully
accommodated. All special requirements are kept confidential between the
trainee and the examiner

The table below details the pass rates for all Recurrent Training examinations:

RECURRENT EXAMS
Exam Paper Pass Rate Procedure
SEP exam Multiple choice 90% Maximum of 1 re-sit
permitted for each paper
Practical PASS crew must demonstrate
their ability to implement
the prescribed procedures
Dangerous Multiple Choice 90% Maximum of 1 re-sit
Goods permitted for each paper

Security Exam Multiple Choice 85% Maximum of 1 re-sit

permitted for each paper

Re-sit Process
The following section details the process for re-sits should they be required:
Should an existing crew member fail to achieve the required standard during
recurrent training, they must be given the opportunity to re-sit the exam. Prior
to the re-sit the crew member should be debriefed by the instructor and
should be given direction on how to achieve the required standard (i.e.,
clarification on procedures etc.). The crew member must also be advised that
the re-sit exam paper will be a different paper to the one they have failed. The
re-sit exam should be conducted at an appropriate time during the day, taking
into account the other elements of recurrent training which are scheduled
during the day.
If the re-sit is failed the crew member will have failed to reach the required
standard.
Flight Crew Failure process
If a flight crew member does not reach the required standard during recurrent
training, the Safety Training Officer, Manager Training Standards, and Crew
Control Supervisor will be advised by the instructor following the failure.
MTS shall consult the STO and having reviewed the report and the issues
identified, shall agree an appropriate course of action. This shall be discussed
with the crew member and the required remedial training shall be arranged,
with a subsequent recheck to ensure the required standard is demonstrated.

Emergency Equipment: (Chapter 3 PAC)

It is important that all crew have a clear understanding of the PDI, the
Location, the, operation and the duration of equipment carried on board.
Effective use of emergency equipment will result in the situation being dealt
with in a prompt and efficient manner.
For recurrent training, crew should review all pieces of emergency equipment.
As part of you classroom/practical training you will be asked to demonstrate
the following:
Actual donning of a lifejacket
Actual donning of a portable oxygen bottle and mask, including
attaching / detaching mask (cabin crew only)
Actual donning of a smoke hood
All other equipment will be reviewed and crew will be asked questions during

Practical Training
As part of recurrent training crew will be required to complete a number of
practical training exercises, these exercises will be conducted throughout the
recurrent training programme.

Practical training is detailed as follows:

(Flight Crew Only)
Actual operation of each emergency exit in normal and emergency mode
(you will be asked to open and close aircraft door for which you are
trained in normal mode. This will be followed by you being asked to
open the door in emergency mode, when you are opening the door in
emergency mode your instructor may introduce one of the following
faults, you will be expected to act appropriately should a fault occur.
o Exit jammed
o Slide failed to inflate
o Power assist failure
o Exit blocked by fire
o Exit blocked by water
(Flight & Cabin Crew)
Actual donning of a smoke hood within a smoke filled environment. (you
will be asked to enter the CEET where the cabin will be filled with smoke.
you will be expected to don the smoke hood within this darkened smoke
filled environment. This will be completed under the supervision of an
instructor, you will then be asked to make your way through the cabin
where you will search the cabin for survivors before exiting. You will be
assessed on donning the hood, communication and leadership)
Actual extinguishing of a simulated fire ( you will be asked to go in to the
fire trainer individually, you will prepare by donning gloves, you will be
asked to get your extinguisher and test it. Your instructor will ignite 3 of
7 fire scenarios; you will be expected to extinguish the fire using the
correct fire fighting techniques. You will be assessed on correct use of
the extinguisher, including testing, use of correct fire fighting techniques
and communication). Fire scenarios that you can be assessed on are
detailed in the table overleaf:

SCCM and cabin crew. These exercises will combine both training and
assessment. You will be assessed on:
o How you implement the drill
o Communication
o Execution
o Interaction
o Team work
These exercises will be monitored throughout by both instructors one of
which will be in the cabin and one of which will be in the command
module monitoring. At any time during these exercises the instructors
may add additional faults to the scenario to see how you react as a crew.
The instructors will not get involved in or stop the scenarios unless there
is a serious breach of procedure or if there is a safety risk. At the end of
each scenario your instructors will de-brief the entire class and repeat
the scenario if required. SCCMs or CMs should expect to operate in the
No 1 position however cabin crew may also be asked to operate as the
No 1 if required. Pilots will be expected to operate in the cockpit.
