Assignment Brief and Guidance
Task 1: (LO1)
1.
Define SI units and derived units. List the basic 7 SI units for all other derived units.
Give examples of some derived units with its names and symbols. Give the usage of
prefix notations and list some.
2.
Do a qualitative and quantitative research on “Covid 19 and its preventive measures”.
Specify the sampling, data collection and analysis methods used for both research and
present the data with proper graphical methods along with one inappropriate example
to show how it affects the visual clarity. Finally analyse and conclude with the
relevance and validity of methods used.
Task 2: (LO2&4)
Q1.
Produce graphs of the following functions and compare the shapes of graphs (i)–(iv)

i) y = ex
ii) y = ln x
iii) y = cos 3x
iv) y = 2x2 + x -15

Q2.
The change in Gibbs energy (J mol-1) for a reaction ΔG = -RTlnK where R is the gas
constant (8.314 JK-1mol-1) T is the temperature in Kelvin (K) (assume T = 2000 K) K is the
equilibrium constant for the reaction. If ΔG = 5000 J mol-1, calculate the equilibrium
constant for the reaction.

Q3.
The work done in an isothermal expansion of a gas from pressure p1 to p2 is given by:
w = w0ln(p1/p2)
If the initial pressure p1 = 8.0 kPa, calculate the final pressure if w=4 w0

Q4.
Newton law of cooling is given by Ɵ = Ɵ0e-kt, where the excess of temperature at zero time is
Ɵo0C and at time t seconds is ƟoC. Determine the rate of change of temperature after 40s,
given that Ɵ0 = 16oC and k = -0.04 and prove this graphically.

Q5.
The length l meters of a certain metal rod at temperature ƟoC us given by l =
1+0.00005Ɵ+0.0000004 Ɵ2. Determine the rate of change of length in mm/oC, when the
temperature is (a) 400 oC and (b) 200 oC.

Q6.
The differential rate equation for a reaction that is second order in the concentration of
reactant A is: Rate = -d[A]/dt = k [A]2 where [A] is the concentration of A (mol dm-3), t is
time (s), k is the second order rate constant (dm3 mol-1 s-1)
i) Integrate the differential equation with respect to time, t, between the limits of t=0 and
t=t.

ii) Use the integrated rate equation to calculate the rate constant, k (dm3mol-1s-1), given
that the initial concentration was 0.1mol dm-3 and the concentration after 4 min was
0.05 mol dm-3.
iii) Calculate concentration of [A] after 3 min.

Q7.
Under certain conditions, the equilibrium constant for the decomposition of PCl5 (g) into
PCl3 (g) and Cl2 (g) is 0.0211. The changes in concentration and the expressions for the
equilibrium concentrations are:

i) Solve for the change and the equilibrium concentrations

ii) Use differential calculus to find the stationary point and explain whether it is a maximum
or minimum.

Task 3: (LO2 &4)

Write a report to comprehensively illustrate the use of a range of mathematical functions
(Polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and circular) in science and to illustrate the
importance of using logarithms in the treatment of scientific data, using a range of carefully
chosen examples. Justify why logarithms are highly regarded in science.

Your report should also show, by using suitable illustrative examples, how the nature of
secondary points on graphs may be analyzed by the use of first and second derivatives.
Applications of calculus to real-world scientific problems should also be illustrated in your
report.

Task 4: (LO3)
1. Do a study on effect of daily walking on weight and psychological wellbeing among
healthy adults and provide the results with statistical analysis. After collecting raw
data as individual, work in two groups and analyse the data using simple correlation
and descriptive statistical techniques. Use an appropriate statistical method to show
the relationship between walking and weight and psychological wellbeing. Using
inferential statistical methods, you should determine whether the sample is
representative of the whole population.
2. After the study, prepare a report on sampling, data collection and descriptive and
inferential statistical methods used to highlight the differences between descriptive
and inferential statistical methods and evaluate how the methods can be improved.
