Solubility Equilibrium (Ksp)

1. The solubility of silver acetate at 20°C is 1.02 g/100 cm3 of water. Calculate the
Ksp for silver acetate.

2. The Ksp for BaSO4 at 20°C is 8.9 x 10-10. Find the solubility of this salt in g/dm3
in
a) pure water
b) 0.05 mol/dm3 BaCl2 solution
c) 0.05 mol/dm3 H2SO4 solution
d) 0.1 mol/dm3 Na2SO4 solution
e) Will a precipitate form if 25 cm3 of 0.01 mol/dm3 BaCl2 solution is mixed
with 25 cm3 of 0.005 mol/dm3 Na2SO4 solution?

3. How many grams of solid Na2SO4 can be added to 1000 dm3 of 0.02 mol/dm3
solution of calcium chloride before CaSO4 starts to precipitate? Ksp (CaSO4) = 6.1
x 10-5

4. How many grams of sodium carbonate may be added to 1000 dm3 of hard water
that has a Ca2+ ion concentration of 0.004 mol/dm3 before a precipitate is
observed. Ksp (CaCO3) = 1.7 x 10-8

5. In each of the following calculate the minimum concentration of lead ion needed
for precipitation in each of the following one litre solutions:
a) 0.01 mol/dm3 Na2S Ksp (PbS) = 7.0 x 10-28
b) 0.01 mol/dm3 NaCl Ksp (PbCl2) = 1.7 x 10-5
c) 0.01 mol/dm-9 NaF Ksp (PbF2) = 7.0 x 10-9

Answers:
1. 3.7 x 10-3 2a) 6.96 x 10-3 g/dm3 b) 4.15 x 10-6 g/dm3 c) 4.15 x 10-6 g/dm3
d) 2.1 x 10-6 g/dm3 e) 1.25 x 10-5 > 8.9 x 10-10(yes ppt) 3. 433.1 g/1000 dm3
4. 4.5 x 10-1 g/1000dm3 5a) 7.0 x 10-26 mol/dm3 b) 1.7 x 10-1 mol/dm3 c) 7.0 x 10-5 mol/dm3
