Robotic surgery

This article taken by the New-York Times deals with the advantages given by the assisting of robots
in surgeries, which seem to be modest to say the least.
Indeed, robotic surgeries were described as the new step in the land of medicine to reach unknow
peaks. Some surgeons believed, and still do, that robots may be more precise and give access to
shorter recovery time. But to this day, all the studies carried out confirm that these expected benefits
are almost non-existent.
Factually, researchers have compared the consequences of the 3 types of surgeries : laparoscopies,
open surgery and robotic surgery – and the conclusion is clear : life-threatening complications
proove no major benefit and mortality rates are also similar. Moreover, this high-tech method has
drawbacks : sometimes the surgery does not work and robot-assisted surgeries actually take more
time to complete. Finally, this is the more expansive method as the machine and specified required
instruments cost a lot, mainly due to the standing of the market. The only particular pros given by
robots is the ergonomy and the comfort for the surgeon.
In my opinion, this article emphasizes using an innovation that revolutionized a sector, like the
robots in the industry, in an other land of activities is not an assurance of performance. That’s why
the argue from Dr James Estham telling a hospital should select an expert over a machine seems
reliable to me. But I would like to highlight that this technology may be useful in the case of
hospitals that lack surgeons and may decide to use robots in order to provide remote surgery.
As a conclusion, robotic surgery seems to fall from its golden pillar but at the same time the USA
are shiftling directly toward it. That’s mean even though the pros and cons are unbalanced, the
medical field will have to adapt. Some can hope that prices come down with the rise of competition
and the technique evolves enough to manifest better results regarding its impact on the patients and
the time it take to use it perfectly.
