MAD FOR LOVE
(La Dama Boba)
When she died in 1632, he was irreconcilable, and spent his
last years in repentance, whipping himself every Friday until
blood dripped from the walls of his chamber. Despite the
scandal his affairs aroused, Lope died in 1635 a national
hero, and his funeral lasted nine days.

Storyteller:
And guess what, this is a story about LOVE...Now, let's talk about
this subject. It's a big word, right? What does Love mean? Are we
talking about romance, friendship, trust, or are we looking into
from the perspective of its complexities such as betrayal and
revenge, or the simple pleasures like love music, cats, yes cats?

That it’s better to be clean than to be bright.
Why educate a girl to speak her mind?
This search for Nise’s match’ll drive me mad
The more I fret, the less answers I find.
You know, Misena, what would make me glad?
That Nise was just slightly less refined.
Finea Oh.
Rufino Eh?

The real sense – or argument –
Is very simply to portray
One who has now found the way
To freedom in love’s firmament,
Is then blinded by the light
Of true understanding; like
lifted to the highest levels
of the mind, and unsurpassed
By this love that burns pure, bright
As seraphic fire does.
Nise
Don’t forever make it up in your head; Go to
school.
Y si acaso no supieres
dónde me hallarás a Mí,
No andes de aquí para allí,
sino, si hallarme quisieres,
a mí buscarme has en ti.
PEDRO translates
Nise I fell.

Clara Yes.
Turin I see,
an angry man may be assuaged
in his uncontrollable rage
By making him look in a mirror,
For the reflection of his face
Seems to make him quite serene.
When Nise graces the scene –
Reflects her sister’s lack of grace –
And in her you see your freedom.

ACT THREE
Enter CLARA
I was born free, and to live free I chose the solitude of the
countryside….I am the distant fire and the far-off sword….If…
A woman who doesn’t love any man can’t make any man
jealous, then disabuse must not be confused with disdain.
Those who call me fierce can leave me alone, as something evil
Page 86 of 113
and dangerous; those who call me an ingrate can stop courting
me; those who call me distant can keep their distance; those
who call me cruel can stop following me: because this fierce
basilisk, this ingrate, this cruel and distant woman is most
certainly not going to seek, court, approach or follow any of
them.
Liseo I can
Otavia Liseo!
Enter CELIA
Yo no sé si he de elegir
algún ingrato por dueño,
que el alma que me amenaza
es un bárbaro instrumento.
¡Espíritus infelices!
que en el espantoso reino
habitáis por esas negras
llamas, sin luz y con fuego,
os conjuro, apremio y mando
que juntos mostréis a un tiempo,
de la suerte que estuviere,
el amor que yo deseo

So, here's the epilogue. Our ending took a detour from Lope
de Vega's play where everyone neatly walked down the aisle
– Nise with Feniso, Finea with Laurencio, and Celia with
