SUMMER SOLSTICE

INTRODUCTI
ON
The summer solstice occurs at the moment the earth's tilt
toward the sun is at a maximum. Therefore, on the day of
the summer solstice, the sun appears at its highest
elevation with a noontime position that changes very little
for several days before and after the summer solstice.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
SUMMER SOLSTICE
and
WINTER SOLSTICE
SUMMER The summer solstice
SOLSTICE
occurs when one of
the Earth's poles
(North pole) has its
maximum tilt toward
the Sun.
WINTER SOLSTICE

The winter solstice, a period

of hibernation, occurs during
the winter seasons when the
North pole's maximum tilt
away from the Sun is at its
lowest, resulting in the
Northern Hemisphere
The Northern Hemisphere experiences the winter
solstice, marking the shortest day and longest
night of the year. This event occurs when the sun
is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, spanning
Australia, Chile, southern Brazil, and northern
South Africa. Pinhole cameras can be used to
document the changes in sun elevation during
these seasons.
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
LENGTH OF DAY AND TEMPERATURE
The longest day of the year typically has the

warmest average temperatures, but this is not

always the case, as the earth's surface and

atmosphere receive more energy than the sun.

WHY IS JUNE 21 THE LONGEST
DAY OF THE YEAR?
The longest day of the year is June 21, when the
sun is at its highest position in the orbital plane,
causing the midnight sun for several weeks in
Arctic regions, including parts of Alaska, Canada,
Greenland, and Scandinavia
