Chapter-29

JACOB’S MARRIAGES AND CHILDREN


 Jacob comes to a covered well and meets Rachel. She arranges for her father Laban to
meet Jacob.
 Laban’s deal with Jacob, Jacob offers to work for seven years as a dowry to receive
Rachel in marriage.
 Laban agrees to give Rachel to Jacob in return for another seven years of work.
 Jacob’s first four sons are born through Leah. They are Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah

Chapter-30
THE CHILDREN BORN TO JACOB
 Two sons born to Bilhah were Dan and Naphtali.
 Two sons are born to Zilpah were Gad and Asher.
 Leah herself bears two more sons (Issachar and Zebulun) and one daughter (Dinah)
 Rachel herself bears a son Jacob and God’s sovereignty over the womb. And Joseph
is born to Rachael.
 Jacob’s agreement with Laban when he plans to leave to Canaan.
 Jacob negotiates a deal with Laban to start building a flock of sheep and goats for
himself. The agreement is made and the flocks are separated.
 God blesses Jacob’s method of breeding, and he greatly increases in wealth.

Chapter-31
JACOB FLEES FROM LABAN TO CANAAN
 Jacob’s disputes with Laban and his sons lead him them look differently at Jacob.
God tells Jacob to return to the Promised Land.
 Jacob explains his plan to his wives and they support him to flee to Canaan.
 Laban pursues to catch Jacob. Jacob proves his innocence.
 A covenant is made between them and a pillar of separation.

Chapter-32
JACOB PREPARES TO MEET ESAU
 Jacob hears of Esau’s approach and prepares gifts for him.
 Jacob meets the angels of God at Mahanaim.
 Jacob’s prayer, he wrestles with God and makes a plea.
 Jacob’s name is changed, and he is a blessed man.

Chapter – 33
THE MEETING OF JACOB AND ESAU
 Esau’s warm welcome. Jacob’s careful preparations. Esau warmly greets Jacob and
his family.
 Esau receives Jacob’s gifts. Jacob’s travels in the Promised Land.
 Jacob and Esau part their ways; Jacob goeso Succoth and comes to Shechem.

Chapter – 34
VIOLATION AGAINST DINAH
 A local prince violates Dinah and then wants to marry her.
 Jacob’s lack of outrage; the anger of Simeon and Levi.
 Hamor and Shechem seek to arrange the marriage of Dinah, convince the men of the
city of Shechem should be circumcised.
 Simeon and Levi destroy the city of Shechem, they rescue Dinah and plunder the city.
Chapter – 35
REVIVAL IN JACOB’S LIFE
 Jacob returns to Bethel. God speaks to Jacob, calling him back to Bethel and
cleansing of Jacob’s family.
 God’s protection of Jacob; he comes to Bethel.
 The death of Deborah, Rebekah’s beloved nurse.
 The birth of Benjamin and the death and burial of Rachel.
 Jacob visits his father Isaac one last time and Isaac dies and they bury him.

THE FAMILY OF ESAU
 The wives, sons, and daughters of Esau. The separation of Jacob and Esau.
B. The descendants of Esau.
 The Edomites descend from Esau.
 The descendants of Edom and the chiefs of the Edomites.

Chapter – 37
JOSEPH IS SOLD INTO SLAVERY
 Joseph’s dreams, Jacob favors Joseph.
 Jacob sends Joseph to find his brothers keeping the sheep.
 The conspiracy to kill Joseph, the dreamer.
 Reuben’s plan to rescue Joseph. But, Joseph is sold into slavery.
 The brothers cover their sin and lie to Jacob concerning Joseph’s fate.
 Joseph ends up in the court of a high Egyptian official.

Chapter – 38
TAMAR AND THE SIN OF JUDAH
 Tamar’s widowhood and Judah’s unfairness. Er’s marriage to Tamar and his death.
 Onan’s refusal to raise up offspring for Tamar. Judah’s unfair dealing with Tamar.
 Judah’s wife dies, and Tamar disguises herself as a prostitute. She gives birth to
twins, Perez and Zerah.

Chapter – 39
JOSEPH IN POTIPHAR’S HOUSE.
 Potiphar, an Egyptian official, buys Joseph. God is with Joseph.
 God blesses Potiphar for Joseph’s sake.
 Joseph’s resistance to temptation and its aftermath.
 Joseph resists her strong attempt at seduction.
 Potiphar’s wife falsely accuses Joseph before Potiphar.
 Joseph is sent to prison. He prospers, even in prison.

Chapter – 40
JOSEPH INTERPRETS DREAMS IN PRISON
 Joseph meets the Egyptian royal butler and baker in prison.
 Joseph shows concern to them to tell him their disturbing dreams and interprets their
dreams.
 Joseph interprets the butler’s dream and asks a favor. The dreams come to pass
exactly according to Joseph’s interpretations.

Chapter – 41
JOSEPH INTERPRETS PHARAOH’S DREAM AND RISES TO POWER
 Pharaoh’s disturbing dreams and troubled spirit.
 Joseph is called to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams and he interprets.
 Joseph gives his advice to Pharaoh. Pharaoh perceives the presence of God’s Spirit in
Joseph.
 Joseph’s promotion to second in the kingdom of Egypt and given high status.
 Joseph seven years of plenty came to pass and seven years of famine begin.

Chapter – 42

JOSEPH MEETS HIS BROTHERS IN EGYPT

 Jacob sends his sons to Egypt to buy grain they bow down before Joseph.
 Joseph recognizes his brothers and puts them into prison and gives terms for their
release.
 Joseph returns the money the brothers paid for the grain.
 The brother’s return to their father Jacob and tells him the story.
 Jacob refuses to let Benjamin go back to Egypt with them.

Chapter – 43

JOSEPH MEETS HIS BROTHERS A SECOND TIME

 Jacob decides to let the brothers return to Egypt with Benjamin gives the order to get
more food.
 Judah convinces his father to let them go to Egypt with Benjamin.
 Jacob sends them with money and gifts for the Egyptian leader.
 Joseph invites the brothers to dinner, treated well in Joseph’s house.
 The brothers meet Joseph and bring their gift to him.
 Joseph’s emotional meeting with Benjamin and he favors Benjamin.

Chapter – 44

JOSEPH TESTS HIS BROTHERS

 Joseph sends them again puts money in his brothers’ bags of grain.
 Joseph’s steward confronts the brothers on their journey back to Canaan.
 The brothers claim they are innocent of theft. The cup is found in Benjamin’s sack.
 The brothers humbly return to an angry Egyptian official.
 Judah commits himself and all the brothers to stick with Benjamin, even as slaves in
Egypt.
 Judah recounts the previous conversations with the Egyptian official recounts the
previous conversation with his father Jacob.
 Judah offers his life for Benjamin and his father.

Chapter – 45

JOSEPH IS REUNITED WITH HIS BROTHERS

 Joseph reveals himself to his brothers.


 Joseph sends his brothers home to go home and to bring their father and find
protection from the famine.
 Pharaoh and Joseph send the brothers home with many gifts.
 Jacob hears the good news – that Joseph lives.
