1.2.7 Tragedy of the Commons

(Reflection Paper)

From what the video has discussed, the “Tragedy of the Commons” is a social
and political problem where people deplete shared resources for short term self-interest,
despite the fact that such acts may cause long-term economic and environmental harm.
This is a form of exploitation of limited resources. Examples include overfishing and
deforestation. If everyone thought “Oh, there's so many fish in the sea. It wouldn't hurt
to take a few hundred, right?”, people would start to impose this idea and it can even
lead to the extinction of a species. The same concept goes for deforestation.

If the Tragedy of the Commons is not resolved, several consequences can occur,
affecting both the environment and humans’ well-being. The consequences include the
depletion of resources and environmental harm. The most obvious consequence is the
overuse and depletion of shared resources that would decrease in availability.
Overexploitation of these resources can lead to environmental destruction such as
deforestation, soil erosion, and destruction of animal habitats.
