Technical Service Bulletin

Excessive anchor profile for Carbozinc 859

This bulletin is a response from Carboline Technical Service to inquiries regarding
acceptable surface profile range of abrasive blasted carbon steel. It is acceptable by
Carboline to apply Carbozinc 859 organic zinc primer over abrasive blasted carbon steel
items which may present abrasive blast or surface profile range between 1.0 to 6.0 mils.
At profile depths above 5 mils, it is recommended to apply the zinc in 2 coats to minimize
the risk of solvent entrapment. This range may appear contrary to nominal surface profile
reference on the CZ 859 Product Data Sheet, but is considered acceptable by Carboline
as long as surface profile is dense and angular - not peened. It is expected the coverage
rate for CZ 859 will be incrementally lower than that noted on the data sheet when surface
profile range increasingly exceeds 3 mils; this due to greater wet film thickness required to
obtain the recommended 3-5 mils dry film thickness above the peaks of the surface profile.

In reference to SSPC PA2 Appendix 2 it is vitally important that, “A Type 2 (electronic

DFT) gage needs to be adjusted to account for the profile of the substrate in order to
read the coating thickness directly.” DFT gages shall be adjusted per the gage
manufacturer’s instructions on the actual blasted steel substrate prior to prime coat
application. As additionally noted in Sec 7.5 of SSPC PA2: “With a correctly calibrated
and adjusted Type 2 gage, the reading obtained indicates the coating thickness above
the peaks”

Of equal importance to proper Type 2 (electronic DFT) gage adjustment on abrasive

blasted steel members is periodic use of wet film gages by applicators and QA/QC
during coating applications as guideline to ensure specified film thickness is obtained. In
order to obtain 3-5 mils DFT of Carbozinc 859 as measured above the peaks of the
surface profile (regardless of profile range).

are not meant to over-ride an agreed upon specification. It is only meant to clarify the
acceptable parameters for application of Carboline’s Carbozinc 859.
