HISTORY OF CAD/CAM AND
DEVELOPMENT
Well defined history is not known
known.. However, it has
gone through FOUR major phases of development –

(1) FIRST HALF ON 1950 – Era of conceiving interactive

computer graphics. It was very slow due to high cost
of H/W.
Second half of 1950 witness the development of
concept of light pen.
pen.

information in graphics (SAGE) Semi automatic ground environment

(2) The decade of 1960 represents the most critical

research for ICG

CAD/CAM DEVELOPMENT
(3) During 1970 - research efforts of the 1960 was
stabalised and reflected in improving
productivity.
During 1980 – 3D wire frame geometry surfaces
based on COONS, Bazier, spline curve, NC
machine, etc. IGES
Engineers started thinking beyond drafting.
(4) Integration of CAD/CAM. Acceptance of
growing credibility of solid modeling

SKMED, NITJSR
PAST
Draft, calculation and product design involved pencil,
paper and seemingly endless succession of
blueprints.
The three different source of origin were –
• Attempts to automate the drafting process.

• Testing of designs by simulation.

• Flow from the design process to the manufacturing

process using numerical control (NC) technologies.

Problem was to represent 3-D object through holes

on paper.
SKMED, NITJSR
PRESENT

• Refining past innovations to make them more

efficiently and user friendly.

• Well developed two different areas.

• Continuous efforts are being made on seamless

integration.

FUTURE
TECHNOLOGY
It will go in two ways
APPLICATION
CIM with highest ease & accuracy
The development at hardware level as well as
software level will may follow three main trends
as –
• Simplicity
• Simulation and
• Personalisation (innovation) or sharing of trade
secret amongst partner.
SKMED, NITJSR
FUTURE
• The ability to combine CAD/CAM, with FEA and the
accessibility of simulation and knowledge
management.
• Greater sophistication of visual representation.
• CAD voice control (CVC) software based on voice
recognition technology.
• Higher resolutions of H/Ws
• Improved ergonomics
• Real time manipulation.
• Large numbers of simultaneous colour of displayed
objects.
• Much more functionality built into systems (H/Ss)
• Availability of max functions
