(Effects and Problems of Modular-Based Learning Approach on Students ’Speaking
Skills)

Introduction
The education system has changed dramatically as a result of the global

epidemic. Some schools' pedagogy has become hybrid, while others have adopted a

modular-based learning technique just to keep the teaching and learning process

going because they have no other choice, particularly in areas where the internet

and technology have limited influence. This transition has resulted in a major change

in the learning ability of the students as it innovates and makes most of the process

uncomfortable. Actually, many people have questioned whether the students'

method is helpful in terms of obtaining knowledge and enhancing students' skills,

particularly in speaking.

On the other hand, it is said that speaking is the most significant skill to study since it

is always involved in daily human transactions, but it is also one of the major abilities

that are difficult to cultivate by an individual, despite the fact that physical learning is

the approach. According to a study conducted in Indonesia by Situjuh Nazara

(2011), it is said that speaking is one of the most complex and hardest talents to

master. Furthermore, speaking is the talent that has virtually always been the focal

point of most people's evaluations (Brown & Yoke, 1983). To put it another way, it is

critical for students to develop communication skills so that they do not become

victims of human judgment and can defend themselves.

Modular-based learning is a method of instruction in which a course is broken

down into segments or units. This is a common technique for taking an online course

since it allows students to comprehend the material by breaking it down into smaller
chunks (thedeveloperacademy, n.y). Modular learning is beneficial for some students

in this strategy since they have the ability to manage their time. They also had the

chance to learn about the teacher's next topic. On the other hand, if personal

learning is always the learning process, the learner will have difficulty acquiring

speaking abilities. And because of the lack of exposure to people, the student's

opportunity to participate in interaction will be limited in modular-based learning. This

will reduce and damage the individual's confidence in interaction.

The modular-based learning process is widely used in the Philippines,

particularly in public elementary and secondary institutions. Because they cannot

access the literature or modules offered on the internet, these youngsters and

students continue to study utilizing printed materials provided by teachers. This

situation only indicates that there is little possibility of developing students' speaking

skills. If physical learning makes it difficult for teachers to develop a student's skills,

what about the modular-based learning approach?

And in order to answer that issue, one researcher needed to understand the

Impact and Problem of the Modular-based Learning Approach on Students’

Speaking’ Skills in predicting the learning gap in students using modular-based

resources.
