Acoustic Phonetics
Acoustic phonetics is the study of the physical properties of speech and aims
to analyse sound wave signals that occur within speech through varying
frequencies, amplitudes and durations.

One way we can analyse the acoustic properties of speech sounds is through
looking at a waveform. Pressure changes can be plotted on a waveform,
which highlights the air particles being compressed and rarefied, creating
sound waves that spread outwards. A tuning fork being struck can provide an
example of the pressure fluctuations in the air and how the air particles
oscillate (move in one direction rhythmically) when we perceive sound.
Physical properties of a sound.

Sound:
The vibrations that travel through the air or
another medium are audible mechanical waves
called sound. Or the sound is the sensation
perceived by the sense of hearing.
Example: Music
Some properties of sound are provided below:
Frequency: The number of cycles of periodic
compression as well as rarefaction that occur
every second when the wave propagates through
the medium would be referred to as frequency.
Speed: Sound speed is the rate at which sound
waves move through a medium.
Frequency, intensity,duration

Frequency, duration and intensity are

quantitative dimensions which describe the
amount of physical activity taking place
during a given time-frame (e.g. one week,
one month, one year).

Frequency
Frequency
The number of occasions of activity in the
given time frame (e.g. one day, one week,
one year).
Duration
The time over which the physical activity
takes place. This can vary from very short
bouts of only a few seconds, to many
hours of continuous activity (e.g.
marathon running).
Intensity

Intensity is the rate of energy

expenditure of the activity. The more
intense the activity, the greater the
metabolic cost per unit of time.
The intensity of an activity can be described in
terms the Metabolic Equivalent Task or MET,
which is the multiple of the individual’s resting
energy expenditure.
This is a continuous dimension which ranges
from very low intensity (or even sedentary)
behaviours, to those which are vigorous and
demand high energy expenditure.
