Sounds

What is a Sound?

 Sound is anything that you can hear!

 Sound is made up of Sound Waves caused by a transfer of energy

through Vibrations.

 Sound waves can be classified as both longitudinal waves and

mechanical waves.
Longitudinal Wave

A wave where particles are displaced parallel to the wave direction.

Mechanical Waves
The kind of Waves that requires a medium to propagate.
Factors that affect Sound Propagation

Kinds of Medium

 SoundPropagation depends heavily on kind of medium

where sound travels.

 Sounds travel faster in solids and slowest in gases.

What is a Sound?

 Sound is anything that you can hear!

 Common characteristics of a wave-like Frequency, Amplitude,
Wavelength, Speed/Velocity, Period, and Phase can also be observed
in Sound Waves.
 Sound waves also exhibit wave properties like reflection, refraction,
diffraction, and interference.
Characteristics of Sound

Pitch
 The highness or lowness of sound that is typically observed in
musical notes.

 The higher the frequency, the higher the pitch. The lower the
frequency, the lower the pitch.
Characteristics of Sound

Intensity
 Refers to the amount of energy of a sound wave. It
is measured in decibel.
Characteristics of Sound

Loudness
 Isa sensation acquired by hearing which depends
on how people perceived sounds.
 Usually,a high-intensity sound produces a louder
sound, and a low-intensity sound creates a softer
sound. As the intensity becomes higher, the
frequency and energy also become high.
