Standard: (BEST/ FL Sci./ NGSS/ FL SS):

SC.5.E.7.4- Distinguish among the various forms of precipitation (rain, snow, sleet, and hail),
making connections to the weather in a particular place and time.

MA.5.M.1.1 - Solve multi-step real-world problems that involve converting measurement units to
equivalent measurements within a single system of measurement.

Learning Trajectory:
Previous Standard:
SC.5.E.7.3-Recognize how air temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction, and
precipitation determine the weather in a particular place and time.

Next Standard:
SC.5.E.7.5- Recognize that some of the weather-related differences, such as temperature and humidity, are
found among different environments, such as swamps, deserts, and mountains.

Instructional objectives(s) & Learning Target: Clear objectives written in the form of student learning.

Students will explain how different types of precipitation form (rain, snow, sleet, and hail) and the conditions
necessary for different types of precipitation to form (e.g., hail develops during strong thunderstorms).

Learning Target:

I can explain how rain, snow, sleet, and hail form.

I can describe the atmospheric conditions necessary for each type of precipitation to form.

Pacing
Introduction/Building Background:
5 min
1. Greeting:
Alright kiddos, are we ready for science today? I need everyone to clear their desks! All you
should have on your desk is your worksheet that I have passed out and a pencil.

2. Hook: What type of weather do we see in Florida?

3. Prior Knowledge:
Think back to a couple weeks ago when you learned about the water cycle, what was a
component in the water cycle we see constantly?

Instructional Steps : Pacing

1. Introduce:
“Today we are going to be learning about different forms of precipitation. Can anyone tell me
what precipitation is?
As I go through the powerpoint today on the different forms of precipitation, you are going to
be filling out the worksheet I gave you. Each box has a place to write the form of precipitation,
to list some facts about that form, and then there is a place where you will be drawing the
form.”
2. Explain:
Go through powerpoint, stopping on each slide to explain the different components of each
form of precipitation. Add specific movement for each form of precipitation(TPR) and have
students copy. 35 min
EXPLAIN THE TEMPERATURE CONVERSION OF 32 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT = 0
DEGREES CELSIUS WHICH IS FREEZING TEMPERATURE
BEFORE doing hail, ask students if they have ever heard of hail, or if they know what hail is.
Have students turn-and-talk predicting what season they think hail is the most common and
why.
Continue going through the slides.
3. Review:
Review different forms of precipitation after slides and worksheets are completed.
Ask HOT: "Why do you think different regions experience varied forms of precipitation
throughout the year?”
IF TIME - Hand sticky note to students having them write 1 thing they learned and 1 thing
they are confused on.
Differentiation Content/What .
1. High quality visuals in presentation
2. Total Physical Response- connecting movement to the rain vocabulary
HOT question (and expected answer): content development
"Why do you think different regions experience varied forms of precipitation throughout the year?”
Answer: Because of the temperature in the regions.

Assessment: : Formative assessment name Assorted Assessments . Describe if needed Pacing

Informal observation during turn- and - talk 5 min

Sticky note responses
Lesson Closure: Teacher talk. Restate the main take-aways from the lesson.

Great job today kiddos! Today we looked at different forms of precipitation, rain, snow, sleet, hail, and
were able to see the different components of each one. As well as with the video, we could visually see
the different forms since we don’t really see anything but rain and maybe sometimes hail in Florida.
Knowing about the different forms of precipitation and the conditions they form in is going to help us
better understand weather and lead us into our next topic of the different types of clouds that produce
each form of precipitation. Go ahead and put your worksheet in your science folder, and go ahead and
leave your sticky notes on your desk, I will come around and collect them!
