“Good Bye Mr. Chips” is a biographical novel. It revolves around the life of Mr. Chips who was a Latin teacher.

The time of Mr. Chips passed slowly like lazy cattle moving through landscape.
3. HOW DID CHIPS MEASURE HIS TIME?
Mr. Chips measured his time with the signals of the past. He measured his time with school bells.
4. WHERE DID CHIPS LODGE AFTER RETIREMENT?
Chips lodged at Mrs. Wicket‟s house after retirement. It was just across the road from Brookfield.

He could live according to school bells because he lodged at Mr. Wicket‟s house. It was just across the road from
Brookfield.

He enjoyed swift and peaceful sleep because he had sound health and no worry.

Merivale was the family doctor of Mr. Chips. He visited Mr. Chips every fortnight. He remarked that Chips was fitter
than he. Moreover, he would die a natural death. Merivale called him a remarkable old boy.

Merivale advised Mrs. Wicket to take care of Chips during cold weather because he was the patient of Bronchitis.

Brookfield was situated near Brookfield village and fenlands. It consisted of eighteen century building. It was centered
upon a quadrangle. It had large playgrounds. It was covered by elm trees.

Brookfield was an old foundation. It was established in the reign of Queen Elizabeth. Later, it was enlarged in the reign
of George I.

Brookfield was a good school of second rank. It was a grammar and a boarding school. It was established in the reign

Brookfield contributed to England a lot. It produced many history making men. It provided the members of parliament,

The inadequacies of Mr. Chips were poor academic career, an average degree, unreliable discipline and no private
means and important family connections.

He was settled and rooted at fifty. He was considered the doyen of the staff. He was a respected staff member. At
sixty, he became Brookfield in himself. He was the guest of honour at Brookfieldian dinners.

Mrs. Wisket‟s house was ugly and pretentious. However, Mr. Chips‟ room was comfortable and sunny.

playgrounds.

Mr. Chips became a house master in spring 1896. It provided him a busy corner in his life. Moreover, he met Katherine
in the same year.
2. WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING/THRILLING INCIDENT OF THE NOVEL? HOW DID THEY MEET?
The incident of Mr. Chips‟ meeting with Katherine is the most interesting incident of the novel. He visited Lake District.
He found a girl waving her hand on a dangerous ledge. He considered her in trouble. Therefore, he hastened towards
her. In that attempt, he got his ankle twisted. Katherine saw him. She came to help him and took him to his farmhouse.
She also considered herself responsible for his the incident. She had nursed him for one week. So they came close, fell
in love and got married.

Mr. Chips disliked women and considered them a monstrous creature. He didn‟t feel at ease in their company.

Henrik Ibsen and Bernard Shaw were the dramatists of the 19th century. They had innovative and feministic ideas. Mr.
Chips disliked their ideas. He thought their plays horrible and disturbing.
5. FROM WHERE DID KATHERINE GET HER IDEAS?
Katherine was greatly inspired by the great writers of 19th century like Henrik Ibsen, Bernard Shaw and William Morris.
She liked their radical and feministic ideas.

Mr. Chips was conservative and the man of past. He disliked innovation and newness. He was against the freedom and
equal rights of women.

Katherine was a beautiful girl of 25. She was a governess out of job. She had flashing eyes, freckled cheeks and straw
coloured hair. She had radical thoughts.

The 19th century woman (Katherine) was radical and modernist. She wanted freedom, change and the equality of
women. She wanted that women should get admission into universities and get right to cast votes.

Katherine liked the quiet and gentle manners of Chips. She liked his brown eyes, charming smile, a complex
personality and the maturity of age.

Mr. Chips liked Katherine because she was charming, young, caring and sensitive. He also liked her bold ideas.
Moreover, she was more articulate and argumentative than Chips.

Mr. Chips remembered the Great Gable/Lake District where he had met Katherine. He also imagined great depths of
Wastewater. He recounted the passages travelled and the time passed with her.
2. WHY DID KATHERINE LIKE TEACHING/CHIPS AS A TEACHER?
Katherine liked Chips as a teacher. She didn‟t like lawyers, businessmen and dentists. She thought that teaching was
very important and different.

Katherine said with mock gravity that she considered herself a new student starting the first term. Then, she bade

Before his marriage, Mr. Chips was a dry and neutral sort of person. He was conservative and narrow minded. He was
not popular and loving.

The boys began to love Chips because he became less rigid. He made his lessons interesting. He started making little
jokes.

Lex Canuleia was a Roman law which allowed the landlords to marry the poor women. Mr. Chips taught the law
humorously. He narrated that Ms. Plebian would blame Mr. Patrician angrily if he left her.

The Mission was established in East London. The students of Brookfield and their parents contributed to the Mission.

Katherine suggested that the Mission team should play a soccer match with Brookfield team. Everyone opposed her

Everyone including Mr. Chips opposed the soccer match suggested by Katherine. On Katherine‟s insistence, Mr. Chips

The soccer match was a good experience. Brookfield Second team defeated the Popular boys by seven to five goals.

A soldier visited Mr. Chips from the military camp. He had been the player of the Poplar team.

1. WHAT MEMORIES OF KATHERINE HAUNT MR. CHIPS?
Katherine‟s memories of rushing through corridor, laughing at some mistake of Mr. Chips during checking essays,
taking part in the party, playing Mozart Trio and rendering advice in the garden party haunted him.
2. HOW DID SHE URGE CHIPS TO FORGIVE STUDENTS?
Katherine urged Chips to advise the boys and find the reason of mistake. She asked him to give them a chance.
3. DID SHE ALWAYS PLEAD FOR LENIENCY?
No, she didn‟t always urge for leniency. She sometimes motivated Mr. Chips to punish the cocksure and arrogant boys.

Ogilvie was a teacher of music at Brookfield. He was also the member of choir at the church. On the other hand,

Mr. Chips tried to write a book on his memories of Archer‟s resignation, the incident of Ogilvie and Dunster and long
epochs of Brookfield. However, he couldn‟t succeed because he got tired physically and mentally. Moreover, he lost
his charm in written incidents.

The pit was the name of the old fifth form room at Brookfield. It had low level. Therefore, it was called the pit or hell.

1. WHEN DID KATHERINE AND HER CHILD DIE?
Katherine died on 1st April, 1898. She passed away at the time of child birth. Her death was shocking for Chips.
2. WHO WAS FAULKNER? HOW DID HE REACT TO HIS REQUEST?
Faulkner was the student of Mr. Chips. He wanted to get short leave on the day of Katherine‟s death. Mr. Chips
responded him coldly, harshly and sadly.
3. WHAT WAS HIS MENTAL CONDITION AT HER DEATH?
Mr. Chips was utterly sad at Katherine‟s death. He considered her death a bad dream. He wanted to get away of this
world.

Some boys sent a lot of letters to Mr. Chips as April foolery. There were blank sheets in the letters. It had no effect on
him because he was lost at the time of death of Katherine.

Mr. Chips took his fourth form as usual even on the day of Katherine‟s death. He couldn‟t teach the boys. So, he set

1. WHY DID HE CHANGE HIS RESEIDENCE?
Mr. Chips used family residence before Katherine‟s death. He had to change his residence to old bachelor quarter after
her death.

After Katherine‟s death, Mr. Chips planned to leave house mastership. The headmaster persuaded him not to give it up.
It provided him a great benefit. It provided him a busy corner in his life and filled up the emptiness of his mind.
3. WHAT WAS EFFECT OF KATHERINE‟S DEATH ON CHIPS? WHY DID BOYS CALL HIM AN OLD MAN AFTER THE DEATH
OF HIS WIFE?
Mr. Chips was sad and alone after Katherine‟s death. He left caring for himself. He wore a tattered gown. Therefore,
the boys started noticing his graying hair and called him old.

Mr. Chips developed the harmony of his habits and manners and often repeated jokes. He overcame his poor discipline
and his diffident feelings. He regained his pride in Brookfield and his worth and achievements.

at the boys. He ticked their names after putting the glance.
8. WHO WERE THE BOERS? WHAT DID CHIPS THINK ABOUT THEM?
The Boers were the descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa. England had fought against them from 1899 to 1902.
Chips neither favoured nor opposed them. He found the Boers similar to English heroes.
9. WHO WAS L.G? WHAT DID CHIPS SAY TO HIM?
L.G was the prime minister of the Great Britain. He had been the student of Mr. Chips. Once, he visited the school and
met Chips. While talking to him, Chips remarked that L.G had improved himself a lot. L.G laughed at the remark and
talked to Chips happily.

1. WHO WAS MELDRUM? HOW LONG DID HE SERVE? HOW DID HE DIE?
Meldrum was the successor of Weatherby. He was the head master of Brookfield. He died of pneumonia in 1900.
2. WHEN DID CHIPS BECOME ACTING HEAD?
Chips became the acting headmaster after the death of Meldrum. Chips had been the head for the temporary period.
3. WHO WAS RALSTON? WHAT TYPE OF PERSON WAS HE?
Ralston was the headmaster of Brookfield after Meldrum. He was energetic and ambitious and the modern man of 37.
He had strict discipline and radical ideas. He wanted to run Brookfield on modern lines.
4. WHO WAS MR. JONES?
Mr. Jones was a servant in the railway department. He was the in-charge of a signal box.
5. WHAT WAS MR. CHIPS‟ DUTY DURING RAILWAY MEN STRIKE?
Mr. Chips was the in-charge of students of Brookfield. They were patrolling along the railway line during railway men
strike.

Mr. Chips remembered about Diamond Jubilee. He along with Katherine went to London to attend the ceremony. They
saw Queen Victoria who looked like a crumbling doll.

views of Chips about war.

A military camp was established near Brookfield. The soldiers used the building for OTC and playgrounds for the

Mr. Chips didn‟t want to be an official head of Brookfield because he had realized that he was unsuitable for the post.

Gregson was the student of Mr. Chips. He was a tall boy with spectacles. He was a lazy fellow. Chips remembered him
due to his laziness.

Linford was the last visitor of Mr. Chips. He came to see Chips in 1933. He was sent by some mischievous boys that
Chips had invited him. Chips received and met him warmly. Mr. Chips discussed Shropshire, general school life and the
news of the day. He advised him to be brave and narrated his experiences at Brookfield.

Linford uttered „Good bye Mr. Chips‟ while departing. It reminded Mr. Chips the last farewell of Katherine on the night
