HYDROPOWER

Hydropower is a renewable energy source that can play a significant role in suppor?ng Net Zero
Energy (NZE) goals. Hydropower plants generate electricity by harnessing the power of moving
water, which is a clean and sustainable source of energy. However, the development of
hydropower can also have socio-economic impacts, both posi?ve and nega?ve, on local
communi?es and the global economy. Some of the poten?al impacts of hydropower
development are.

Posi?ve socio-economic impacts: Hydropower development can create jobs, increase access to
electricity, and improve the standard of living for local communi?es. For example, a study
conducted in Sulewana Village, Indonesia, found that the construc?on of a hydropower plant had
a significant and posi?ve impact on the local development, including educa?on, health, safety,
income level, employment, and welfare level.(Kayupa et al., n.d.)

Nega?ve socio-economic impacts: Hydropower development can also have nega?ve impacts on
local communi?es, such as displacement of people, loss of livelihoods, and environmental
degrada?on. For example, sedimenta?on in the reservoir can cause the performance of
hydropower plants to decrease, which can lead to economic losses. [2]

Challenges in hydropower development in Indonesia: Indonesia has a significant poten?al for

hydropower development, but there are several challenges that need to be addressed. These
challenges include environmental and social impacts, land acquisi?on, and financing. For
example, a study conducted in Banjarnegara, Indonesia, found that the development of the Mrica
hydropower plant had a significant impact on the social and economic life of the local community,
including land acquisi?on, rese[lement, and compensa?on [3]

In my opinion, hydropower can be an essen?al source of renewable energy to support NZE goals.
However, it is crucial to ensure that the development of hydropower is sustainable and does not
have nega?ve impacts on local communi?es and the environment. Governments and
stakeholders should work together to address the challenges in hydropower development and
ensure that the benefits of hydropower are shared equitably among all stakeholders.
