WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING

Water Resources Engineering constitutes a specific type of Civil Engineering that involves plans for
the modernization of existing systems and equipment to assist in managing people's water resources.
Water treatment facilities, subterranean drilling, and springs are some of the areas addressed by water
resource engineers. In order to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of water treatment and aquatic
resource management, engineers need to build modern equipment and systems. A typical workday
consists of analyzing data from important areas and, at this point in time, developing modern or ongoing
water treatment equipment to improve the cleanliness of the system.

In planning such systems, the water resource engineer must take into account budget constraints,
government regulations, and other variables. To ensure that these systems are properly assembled, a Water
Resource Engineer may be responsible for the design and implementation of such systems. They may also
supervise the maintenance and support for these systems once they have been completed.

Water resource engineers play a crucial role in ensuring the efficiency and adaptability of water supply
infrastructure to natural disasters arising from climate change, aging, and population growth.

HISTORY OF WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING

Water resources engineering has its origins in the ancient world, with evidence of its use in the Middle
East, India and China dating back to 3000 BC. Ancient civilizations used hydraulic engineering to irrigate
their agricultural lands and store water for long-term use. During the Middle Ages, hydraulic engineering
was used to build dams and canals for flood control and agricultural land irrigation.

ANTIQUITY

In the 17th-18th centuries Water engineering began to be used for other purposes such as water supply
and sewage systems, As well as providing a source of energy through the use of water wheels. In the 19th
century, Advances in engineering and technology have allowed engineers to design and build more
complex water resource projects such as aqueducts and irrigation canals. And In the 20th century, The

focus of water engineering shifted to water resource management and conservation, With the development
of models and tools to help manage and protect water resources.

MODERN TIME

As Today Water resources engineering is used to manage, develop and protect water resources for a
wide range of purposes. The need for water has steadily increased from ancient times and the role of the
hydraulic engineer is a critical one in supplying it. Also in the modern hydraulic engineer uses the same
kinds of computer-aided design (CAD) tools as many of the other engineering disciplines while also
making use of technologies like computational fluid dynamics to perform the calculations to accurately
predict flow characteristics, GPS mapping to assist in locating the best paths for installing a system and
laser-based surveying tools to aid in the actual construction of a system.

TRENDS IN INDUSTRY

One of the major responsibilities of water resource engineers is “water-resource recoverability,” which
requires them to recover reusable elements in wastewater. Engineers are able to filter out valuable
nutrients from the water that can be used for fertilizer, or obtain particles as a substitute for sand. In other
cases, engineers are able to capture heat from wastewater. This heat can be used to heat buildings, while
other organic wastewater material can be utilized as renewable energy.

● Updating Wastewater Treatment Facilities

Engineers are able to treat wastewater so that it can be used for irrigation, potable water or even as
cooling water for industrial plants

● UV Disinfection Technology

To provide clean drinking water, water resource engineers are integrating ultraviolet disinfection
technology into water treatment plants.

● Cooling Waterways and Oceans

3
Water resource engineers are helping confront global warming through the process of cooling waterways
and oceans. Cooler water is better equipped to trap carbon dioxide.

IMPORTANCE OF WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING

Water resource engineers are employed by organizations operating in the water sector. Water suppliers
abstract water from the environment, treat it to the required standard, and distribute it to household and
non-household clients. Within this broader context, water resource engineers are at the forefront of
sustainable resource use by conserving water, building dams, and delivering water to customers. Their
plans ensure the full integration and coordination of water management to meet the needs of both nature
and their clients.

FACTORS AFFECTING WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING

In the face of climate change, water resource engineers face several challenges, including increasing
variability and uncertainty in water availability, quality, and demand, as well as increased risks of
droughts, floods, and conflicts.

WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING PROJECTS

Local Projects

Angat Dam

Angat Dam is a concrete water reservoir embankment hydroelectric dam that supplies Metro Manila
and nearby provinces with water. It was a part of the Angat-Ipo- La Mesa water system. The reservoir
supplies about 90 percent of raw water requirements for Metro Manila through the facilities of the
Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System and it irrigates about 28,000 hectares of farmland in the
provinces of Bulacan and Pampanga. The dam is 131 meters high and impounds water from the Angat
River that subsequently created the Angat Lake.

Larisip (Lower Agno River Irrigation System Improvement Project)

Larisip (Lower Agno River Irrigation System Improvement Project)'s primary objective is to construct
new canal systems, rehabilitate existing irrigation facilities, restore non-functional service areas to
improve water delivery and/or augment irrigation water supply in order to increase agricultural
productivity and farmers income, and generate employment in the process.
