Hazardous Waste in Pulp and Paper Industry

SOLID WASTE

● Mainly treatment sludges, lime mud, lime slaker grits,

green liquor dregs, boiler and furnace ash, scrubber
sludges, and wood processing residuals.

WASTE WATER

● Include wood debris, soluble wood materials, toxic

compounds such as resin acids, unsaturated fatty acids,
etc.
● The most problematic wastewater content:
chlorinated organic compounds or AOX from
oxidation of chlorine
● Effect: toxicity in fish and other water-living organisms

ACetone
- Source: Paper
making and coating

• In industries, COD is more preferable than BOD for process control measurement since the results are more
reproducible and are available in just two hours rather than five days.
• The main issue of waste water is the contaminant. COD, color, SS, and etc. are the parameter of these contaminant. 5

Air Pollution Management
ELECTROSTATIC PRECIPITATOR

● Removes particulates such as fly ash

● Used in lime kiln and in recovery boiler in
conjunction with wet scrubber
● Charges particles negatively, and collect
them in a positively charged plate
● Depends on the resistivity of the
particulate

WET SCRUBBING

● Removes pollutants by spraying the gas

emissions with liquid
● Removes fines particulates and gaseous Revision:
particles Electrostatic precipitator uses a lot of electrical
● Small space requirements energy, thus making this method expensive and
● Found in lime kiln and recovery boiler higher operating cost
10
BIOCHEMICAL TREATMENT CONTINUOUS EMISSIONS MONITORING SYSTEM

● Biofiltration ● System to monitor concentration of

-packed bed pollutants in gas being emitted
-inert synthetic/natural packing (polyurethane, ● A way to check whether the composition
ceramic) of emissions meets the regulated
● Bioscrubbing amount
● A dilution-extraction is used to take a
sample of the gas ad dilute in dry air
● Concentration is then analyzed by using
various techniques such as infrared
spectroscopy.
● Expensive, but the most effective
● Usually for smallest particles

It is a sustainability strategy to monitor and manage ten key
impact areas of our business and wider supply chain. It is Sustainability
developed using stakeholder input and drawing upon global Roadmap Vision to
standards and frameworks to determine a series of 2020
commitments under each impact area. APP also established
Forest Conservation Policy (FCP) to complement the Asia Pulp & Paper Group
roadmap to meet zero deforestation commitments.

Tahun 2006, every industry must have AMDAL in their planning strategies.

UKL and UPL : According to Pasal 1 ayat 1 Keputusan Menteri Negara Lingkungan
Hidup Nomor 86 Tahun 2002, UKL and UPL are managing and monitoring activities
that has an impact on the environment required for decision making process regarding
the activities that will be conducted in the future.

WBCSD
● The WBCSD was formed in January
1995 when the Business Council for
Sustainable Development merged
with the World Industry Council for
the Environment.

● The paper study - initiated by Erling

Lorentzen, chairman of Aracruz
Celulose, a WBCSD Council member,
is one of many projects organised by
the WBCSD.

● This study aims to provide a balan-

ced analysis of the paper cycle
from the perspective of sustainable
development. It is intended to create
a focal point for further debate and
consultation at global and local
levels.

APP’s Pulpwood Suppliers
APP’s Forestry is a division within APP and is
responsible for the management of supply of wood
fiber to all APP mills by assessing it.
The assessment consisted of crosschecking 168
pulpwood plantation companies and the individuals
listed under these companies’ shareholders, Board of
Commissioners, and Board of Directors, to assess the
relationship, whether by ownership structure or
financial influence, with APP. The assessment
concluded that:

• The companies identified as APP Partners are

consistent with the ones we have declared through
the APP FCP Monitoring Dashboard
(www.fcpmonitoring.com)
• The companies that were identified as involved in
deforestation practices no longer supply to APP
• Other companies that were alleged to have
relationship to APP have been identified as having
no relationship to APP supply chain

23
The Use of Renewable Energy to Reduce Carbon
Footprint and Increase Energy Independency

• Generate methane from wastewater, and

to recycle the gas as a fuel to power
production.

• Uses waste heat from a sophisticated gas

turbine power generation unit to reduce
its use of coal to process steam.

• Use methods of Co-Processing with

various Alternative Fuel and Raw Materials

24
Co-Processing in recycling Alternative Fuel and Raw
Materials

Some by-products from the process is used as the

alternative fuel and raw materials. The AFR
include:

• A major effort is converting by-products into

black liquor which is considered renewable.
Black liquor is the alternative fuel of choice at
Lontar Papyrus mill (LP) in Jambi Province,
Sumatra, where the mill meets nearly 60
percent of its energy needs.

• Other examples include: around 20 percent of

the LP energy mix comes from recycled bark
and wood waste.

• Sludge from the wastewater treatment plant

Tissue

• A single tree can make 100 pounds, equivalent to around

1,500 rolls of toilet paper.

Paper

● It would take a little more than half a tree to make a

carton (10 reams) of 100 percent, non-recycled 20-lb.
copier paper. One tree makes 16.67 reams of copy paper
(or 8,333.3 sheets). One ream (500 sheets) uses 6
percent of a tree.
