ENGINEE What is a profession? * A profession is an occupation, usually paid, which requires a person to undergo prolonged training from a particular university, institute, or under an expert. It refers to an activity, in which a person applies his/her specialized knowledge and skill, in the occupation. Professionals are governed by a professional body, which also lays down the guidelines or code of conduct required to be followed by all the members. Fundamental Characteristics of a Profession Great responsibility Accountability Based on specialized, theoretical knowledge Institutional preparation Autonomy Clients rather than customers Direct working relationships Ethical constraints Merit-based Capitalist morality The Professional in the Philippines TF i A professional in the Philippines is defined as a person who: + has completed a prescribed university course; * passed a licensure examination/has been issued a Certificate of Registration/ Professional ID Card/ Professional Tax Receipt (PTR); + is a member of good standing of an accredited professional organization (APO); * follows a set of standards/code of practice; and + adheres to professional code of ethics Read the article ‘Licensing & Registration Rules - Engineering - Philippines - CCS 44’ uploaded in your LMS. Licences and Certifications Certificates of registration for the practice of mechanical engineering shall be of three grades and in the order of rank as follows: * Professional Mechanical Engineer, * Mechanical Engineer, and * Certified Plant Mechanic. From Republic Act No. 5336 Certified Plant Mechanics Plant mechanics are technicians who oversee, maintain and repair defective industrial or agricultural equipment. Their jobs vary depending on what _ their employers specifically want from them. A plant mechanic's usual tasks usually revolve around deciphering instruction manuals, repairs, welding, transportation. Practice of Mechanical Engineering A person shall be deemed to be practicing mechanical engineering or rendering mechanical engineering service within the meaning and intent of this Act when he performs the following: + Consultation, valuation, investigation and management services requiring mechanical engineering knowledge; + Engineering design, preparation of plans, specifications and projects studies or estimates for mechanical equipment, machinery, or processes of any mechanical works, projects or plants; + Management or supervision of the erection, installation, alteration, testing and commissioning of mechanical equipment, machinery, or processes in mechanical works, projects or plants; + Management, supervision, operation, tending or maintenance of any mechanical equipment, machinery or processes in mechanical work, projects or plants; + Management or supervision of the manufacture, sale, supply or distribution of mechanical equipment parts or components; + Teaching of mechanical engineering professional subjects in government recognized and accredited engineering schools; and + Employment in government as a professional mechanical engineer, registered mechanical engineer, or cerlified plant mechanic if the nature and character of his work is in line with tis profession requiring professional knowledge of the science of mechanical engineering From: Philippine Mechanical Engineering Act of 1998
