GENDER ROLE

TIMELINE
of the Industrial
Revolution
we are standing in a crucial moment. Far right, populist leaders have
swept into power on a rising tide of misogyny, racism, white
nationalism, and xenophobia. Their supporters lash out with increasing
violence at those who strive for equality in the face of entrenched
power.

1750- FEW RIGHTS

-Women had to take various roles during this period in
general women had very few rights and experienced
oppression at the hands of the patriarchy whilst it was
common this period that man to be well educated and
have work outside the home, they also expected to
make decisions on behalf of the family. He was the
owner of all the property and monetary values in the
household and women rarely spoke against or divorced
their husband

1760 - UNDERPAYED
-In this period there was a general decrease in the agricultural
employment of women, and work patterns for men and women
outside the household diverged in a number of ways.
Increasingly, female employment was concentrated in spring
activities like dairying and calving, while male labor was
specialized in the fall harvesting of cereal crops, which required
heavier technology. Especially in the latter half of the century,
moreover, male real wages rose as female real wages declined.

1780-
THE LADIES ASSCOCIATION OF PHILADELPHIA
Esther Reed created the Ladies' Association of Philadelphia, and
is thought to have written the "Sentiments of an American
Woman." Knowing women were instrumental in nonimportation
and exportation boycotts against the British during the
Imperial Crisis period, she wanted to inspire women to do more
to help win the Revolution. She often referred to women as
"brave Americans."

1840- HEALTH AND

EDUCATION REFORMS
Women like Dorothea Dix lead the way in prison
reform and advocate for humane asylums to
be built for the mentally ill. She and others
were influential in health and education reform
movements during this time period.

1880 - THE FEMINIST

Between 1880 and 1900 new women ideals
developed and women started to take on new
roles in public society. A few women were
accepted to the University. Women wrote
books and participated in the public debate.
And they organized themselves in unions and
associations.

1920 -THE HOUSEWIFE

AND THE PROVIDER
When suffrage for women was introduced in
1920, the major newspaper Aftenposten only
mentioned the news in a short notice. The
controversies were over long before the act
was passed. The women’s associations were
also reduced.
