Past Perfect Simple

The past perfect simple expresses an action taking place before a certain time in the past.

Signal Words
 already, just, never, not yet, once, until that day (with reference to the past, not the present)

Form of Past Perfect Simple

Aff. S + HAD + VB III/-ED The students talked about the film they had watched.

Int. HAD + S + VB III/-ED? Had she found a new job that time?

Neg. S + HAD + NOT + VB III/-ED In the shopping centre, I met a friend who I had not
seen for ages.

Use of Past Perfect


 action taking place before a certain time in the past
(putting emphasis only on the fact, not the duration)
Examples: Before I came here, I had spoken to Jack.

My friend was in hospital because she had slipped on a banana skin.

We admired the picture that Lucy had painted.

Put the verbs into the correct form (past perfect simple).

1. The storm destroyed the sandcastle that we had built (build) .


2. He (not / be) to Cape Town before 1997.
3. When she went out to play, she (do / already) her homework.
4. My brother ate all of the cake that our mum (make) .
5. The doctor took off the plaster that he (put on) six weeks before.
