Covid-19 and Hypertension: Annotated Bibliography

Baranova, A., Cao, H., & Zhang, F. (2023). Causal associations and shared genetics between

hypertension and COVID‐19. Journal of medical virology, 2023, Vol.95 (4), p.e28698-

n/a. https://doi.org/ 10.1002/jmv.28698

Baranova et al. (2023) conducted a research on the causality of hypertension to

Covid-19 through its molecular mechanisms. The results suggested that hypertension

disrupts the molecular level homeostasis of Covid-19 patients in fighting the

infection.Hypertension in Covid-19 patients shows increased risk in morbidity and mortality.

In conclusion, hypertension is proven to aggravate the symptoms of Covid-19 infection.

management: Guidance from the HOPE Asia Network. The journal of clinical hypertension

(Greenwich, Conn.), 2020, Vol.22 (7), p.1109-1119. https://doi.org/ 10.1111/jch.13917

This article has compiled data gathered during the Covid-19 surge to see the correlation

between Covid-19 and hypertension. The results suggested that hypertension is not a risk

factor for Covid-19 but it is evident to be a comorbidity. In relation to this, Covid-19 patients

with hypertension should still continue with their ACE-inhibitors (medication to treat and

manage hypertension). Overall, the proper management of Covid-19 patients’ hypertension

through medicine and exercise can certainly decrease the severity of infection.

Open heart, 2020, Vol.7 (1), p.e001310. https://doi.org/10.1136/openhrt-2020-001310

This article presented an increased rate of complications for Covid-19 patients with

cardiovascular disease. With hypertension being a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, it

has been shown that a large number of Covid-19 patients has been identified to have

hypertension. Also, there is a high rate of Covid-19 patients with hypertension that have

died compared to patients without comorbidity. In summary, deeper understanding of the

relation of hypertension to Covid-19 can help to manage the prognosis of the infection and
to fight its transmission and spread to the community.
