Anatomizing Characters of ‘THE BIG BANG THEORY’
The Big Bang Theory is an American Sitcom that first aired on CBS in 2007. The show has in total 12 seasons. Show revolves around 4 nerds
working at Caltech who are socially very awkward and how their lives take turn when girls get involved with them. Here in this column is
psychological analysis of all 7 lead characters of the show.

Dr. Sheldon Lee Cooper
Sheldon is the most weird and interesting character of the series. A “mad genius” theoretical physicist with a PhD., ScD. He has an IQ of 187
along with many advanced degrees but has problems in identifying emotions, social interactions, and of course doesn’t understand SARCASM.
Sheldon enjoys proving people wrong, and being always right. He has a thing for TRAINS. He doesn’t believe in God.
Psychological evaluation:
Sheldon has a condition Autism Spectrum disorder (Asperger’s syndrome). Proving points:
Sheldon has deficiency in social communication and interaction across multiple contexts:
1. Creating roommates agreements, relationship agreement.

2. Being rude to people on face (for instance, mocking penny about using their Wi-Fi connection and eating their food all the time and not
contributing any money for it).
3. Not appreciating other people (Leonard drives him to work every day, instead of being thankful to Leonard about it Sheldon thinks its
moment of pride for Leonard that he gets to drive him for work every day).
Sheldon has restricted repetitive patterns of behavior, interests and activities:
1. Knocking on the door like “knock knock knock penny” in set of three. And if they open door without letting him complete, he would anyway
complete knocking.
2. Looking at Penny’s house unorganized Sheldon couldn’t sleep at and hence he broke into her house in the middle of night and started
organizing it.
3. Getting him tricked to organize Bernadette’s closet.
4. He has his own designated spot and doesn’t like anyone else sitting on his spot. “THAT’S MY SPOT” are his words if anyone shows
willingness to sit at his spot.
5. Sheldon doesn’t like changes. He has weekly schedule. Monday is Thai food night, Tuesday is burger night, Wednesday is new comic books
day and Halo night, Thursday is pizza night, Friday is Chinese food night and vintage game night, Saturday is laundry night and Sunday is
mystery. Not only has this but Sheldon had bathroom schedule too. Sheldon controls the thermostat in the apartment which is set at 71
degrees. He has his specific hair cut. And specific barber. And many such things to prove the point.
He has inability to combine Muscles. We can observe that in the very beginning when he and Leonard were trying to lift a heavy package for
Penny.
Other common things:
1. Nightmares. Sheldon can see professor proton in his dreams and asks him for solutions to his problems.
2. Sensitivity to sound. Whenever penny comes over and she and Leonard are having pillow talk he would shout “can you keep it down,
someone is trying to sleep here”.
3. Phobias. Sheldon has strong fear of germs which means he is germophobic. He also has autophobia that is fear of being alone and he is also
phobic to driving, and is scelerophobic which is fear of criminals, he also is ornithophobic which is fear of birds.
Considering the above facts and evidences we can come to a conclusion that Sheldon has Asperger’s syndrome.
Dr. Leonard Hofstadter
Leonard Hofstadter is Sheldon’s roommate and takes care of Sheldon all the time. Leonard is experimental physicist who got his degree from
Princeton. He belongs to a family of scientists. His mother Beverly is psychiatrist and a neuroscientist. His father Alfred is anthropologist.
Leonard’s both siblings were scientists too. Leonard is shy and nerd with love for video games.
Leonard Hofstadter has severe Mommy Issues.
Leonard once shared a story of dressing up as Hulk using his moms “padded bras” as muscles just to piss his mom off in his childhood.
Leonard’s mother Beverly has personality traits same as Sheldon and that is why Sheldon and Beverly bond a lot more and share their lives
intimate details with each other. Sheldon knows all the details even before Leonard does. (Divorce of Leonard’s parents, death of family dog
Mitsy) which is why Leonard always gets mad.
Leonard confessed to penny that in childhood he made a hugging machine whose arms were controlled by remote just to compensate the lack
of love from his mother.
Leonard as a child never got to celebrate his Birthdays and Christmas because his mother Beverly’s ideology. And he also hates his memories
of Christmas because he and his siblings had to turn in papers to “Santa” and for 6 years straight Leonard was graded with C minus.
Considering all the above facts we can conclude that Leonard has mommy issues.
Dr. Rajesh Koothrappali
Rajesh Koothrappali AKA Raj is an Astrophysicists and also presented shows at Griffith Planetarium. Raj’s parents in India are filthy rich as his
father is a doctor. Raj has a thing for hosting theme parties. He is best friends with Howard Wolowitz and Raj calls their bond “bromance” he
also has a weird relationship with his dog. due to his weird behaviour he ended up alone all the time. His parents even tried to arrange his
marriage by finding him a match multiple times but he even failed in it.
Raj koothrappali has selective mutism
Raj had a condition in which he couldn’t speak to women other than his family members unless he consumed alcohol.
He couldn’t even talk to penny in the beginning. If he would have anything to share in her presence, he would whisper it to Howard and
Howard would convey it to penny.
When Raj was called to Human Resources Department by Janine he first consumes alcohol and then entered her office.
Raj also had problems of anxiety which lead to selective mutism. When was ready to have coitus with Anu he gets really nervous and it leads
him to selective mutism.
As due to his problem of selective mutism Raj often consumed alcohol before talking to women which made him jerk.
Considering all the events and facts above we can conclude that Raj had selective mutism.
Dr. Howard Wolowitz
Howard is the only one among the men lead characters with no PhD. He was MIT engineer. Among the four he was more interested in sex and
had many different logic’s and ideas to get women. He was crazy about magic. He thought magic would get him girls. He had weird relationship
with his mother. He finally met Bernadette and got married to her. He had 2 kids. Howard worked with NASA and went to space.
Psychological Evaluation:
Howard falls in depression for some time.

After yet another attempt of approach by Howard, penny finally confronts him about the way he treats women.
That greatly affected Howard and he falls into depression, he missed his work for many days and stayed home.
Howard loves to be center of attention. He is confident, optimistic, and funny and he loves interacting with people. These traits sometimes
puts him trouble. These are all the traits a person with personality type I have.
Howard being person with personality type I is attracted to people with personality type D. (his mother, and his wife Bernadette.) with strong-
will, tenacious, and outspokenness.
On the other side, Howard sometimes comes across as narcissistic or self-absorbed, due to his need to constantly be the center of attraction. He
has weird dressing sense.
Penny
Penny is originally from small town Nebraska; she came to become an actress. She worked as a waitress at local Cheesecake Factory. In contrast to
rest of the group, Penny is not educated. In spite of that she has great social skills. Penny is prettiest of all the girls in the group. Has a taste for
wine and alcohol. In beginning she has various boyfriends and then at last settles up with Leonard. She mingled well and explains Sheldon his
mistakes.
Penny has borderline personality disorder:
1. Impulsive: penny has behavior that can be harmful and distractive to others property. (Penny ruined Sheldon’s spot by spilling green color on
it)
2. Penny’s excessive spending, risky driving (ignoring engine check lights), excessively short relationships, excessive drinking/alcoholism and
she once got so addicted to an online game that she forgot to go to work.
3. Penny has strong problem of mood swings.
4. She also has intense but strong episodes of anxiety and depression.
Dr. Bernadette Rostenkowski
Bernadette is a microbiologist who worked as a waitress with Penny at Cheesecake Factory before getting her PhD. Later she began her job at a
pharmaceutical company. She began dating Howard hen Penny fixed them up. They even got married and had kids. Bernadette is often being
joked on being tiny as her height was short. Bernadette in her adolescence entered beauty pageants.
Bernadette has anger issues:
1. Bernadette always gets angry if something doesn’t go her way. But she is very tiny and sweet but with a sneaky voice when she gets angry.
She is bossy in a lovable sense. A lot of people including Penny are scared of her.
2. For instance, when Bernadette fixes an interview as sales rep. for Penny with her office and she asks penny to read some stuff so that it can
help her in the interview.
3. Her coworker Dan is afraid of her ever since she yelled at him and his grandson after they lost the three legged race at the company picnic.
4. She is called as mean kid with the boobies.
5. When Howards mother is dead and they have to finish all the food in freezer Sheldon and Leonard get into fight and Bernadette takes them
into the hall and gets angry on them and yells at them.
Looking all o these facts and evident we can conclude Bernadette has anger issues and is a bully.
Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler
Amy is a neuroscientist and Sheldon’s better half. She was discovered by Raj and Howard as possible match or Sheldon through a dating site.
Amy has very complex and sad childhood. She had no friends and is glad now to have Penny as her best friend. Amy’s mother paid Amy’s cousin
to take her to prom but he ended up using the money to buy drugs. She anyway went to prom, but was only in the cleaning crew. When penny
came to know about Amy being Sheldon’s female friend she called them as “SHAMY”. She also co-hosted internet show “FUN WITH FLAGS”
with Sheldon. Amy is very patient with Sheldon in their relationship.
Amy has OCD and autistic traits just like Sheldon.

Amy is attracted toward female-to-female and kinkier forms of sex. In many episodes we can see that she adores and says something weird
about penny being beautiful. One time she said that “I am feeling very angry at you but aw look at that jaw line.”
Amy has characteristic just like Sheldon, and hence she resists social norms and dating, but eventually forms friendships and embraces social
life.
She also at times becomes insensitive, like when she gave Penny puzzles to solve comparing her with monkeys.
Though all the characters have their own drawbacks and weirdness show ends up with a BIG BANG.
