KNOWLEDGE ON THE CONCEPT OF HEALTH CARE

I. A member of a family that has serious illness such as stroke, cancer, dementia,
osteoporosis, or genetic birth disorders.

Actual Findings:

Based on the data that was gathered that is shown in the figure above, 90% of the

respondents answered that none of their family members have serious illnesses or diseases.

The remaining 10% answered that one of their family members is experiencing serious health

concerns.

Analysis and Interpretation:

The figure above indicates the number and percentage of the members of the family

whether or not someone in the family is experiencing serious illnesses and diseases such as

congenital defects, osteoporosis, cancer, stroke, hypertension, or any related serious condition

that might affect health. The majority of the interviewed respondents answered that no one in

their family is experiencing serious conditions that might affect the well being or health of the

family. The minority of the interviewed respondents answered that there is someone in their

family experiencing serious health conditions.This shows awareness, care, and readiness to

address any significant health problems present in their family. Managing chronic illnesses
demands financial resources, time, and dedication from family members, indicating their

awareness and readiness to deal with such challenges.

II. If their Illness is Controlled

The figure above showed that 58% of the respondents answered that the illness

experienced is not controlled and the 42% answered that the illnesses experienced are

controlled.

Analysis and Interpretation:

Based on the data gathered, the majority of the individuals experiencing serious

illnesses, answered that they do not have control on the illness experienced by their family

members. The minority of the interviewed individuals answered that they have control on the

illness experienced by their family members. The people who indicated they have their illnesses

under control went on stating that they have maintenance medications they take on a regular

basis, that they have set aside money for these expenses, taken supplements and other herbal

alternatives to manage their conditions, and also adjust their lifestyle and diet according to their

financial capabilities and health needs. On the other hand, those who stated they don't have

their illnesses managed highlighted the primary reason as a lack of financial support or capacity
to consistently purchase prescribed medications. They also cited insufficient knowledge of

cheaper or more accessible alternatives as additional reasons.

III. Families that have adequate exercise and rest.

Based on the data gathered that is shown in the figure above, 66% of the respondents

answered that they get adequate exercise and 34% of the respondents answered that they do

not have adequate exercise and rest.

Analysis and Interpretation:

Majority of the respondents answered that they were able to have adequate exercise

and rest, and a minority of them answered that they were not able to have adequate exercise

and rest. Sitio Pulang Bukid of Barangay Alang Alang is far from the highway roads so the

environment is less noisy. The exercises that they mentioned are their daily activities, which

include a lot of walking as their primary mode of moving around the area. The minority of the

population who responded to not acquiring enough rest and exercise came from the working

sector, specifically individuals who work graveyard shifts.


IV. Families that have a special account for health care expenses such as a health
savings account

Based on the data gathered that is shown in the figure above, 70% of the respondents

answered that they don’t have any special accounts for health care expenses, and the other

30% answered that they have allocated a special account for health care expenses.

Analysis and Interpretation:

According to the findings, the majority of respondents have no allocation or form of

savings for their health care expenses. The majority of interviewees stated that they are able to

get health savings for the purpose of emergency or actual health expenses. The account in

reference to this question in the survey meant a bank account or a specific portion of their

savings or funds that have been set aside for health emergencies or if any member of the family

becomes seriously ill, requiring hospitalizations, treatments, or costly consultations with a

specialized physician.
V. Hospital or clinic near their home

Based on the data gathered that is shown in the figure above, 100% answered that there

is a nearby hospital or clinic in their home.

Analysis and Interpretation:

The hospital or clinic that is near their household is within 230 m away from their place of

residence. Based on the data shown above, 100% of the interviewed respondents are aware of

the presence of a healthcare facility near their household and what services they can avail.

Knowing where to go whenever their health changes and they can no longer manage at home is

a huge advantage for any member of the community. Approximately 100% of respondents are

aware of the Maayo Hospital, Mandaue, which is a functioning nearby hospital.

VI. A member of the family taking vitamin pills to stay healthy.

Actual Findings:

Based on the data that was gathered that is shown in the figure above 66% of the

interviewed respondents answered yes and 34% answered no on whether someone in their

family is taking vitamin pills to stay healthy.

Analysis and Interpretation:

During the interview, the majority of respondents claimed that everyone in their family or

someone in their family takes vitamins to prevent getting sick with any type of unwanted illness.

The remaining half of those interviewed stated that no one in their family takes supplemental

vitamins. Though many supplements are certainly beneficial to your health, evidence differs

widely, and it's critical to understand which can be beneficial and which may be harmful. The

majority of respondents said they take supplements and vitamins, and the majority of them take

Vitamin C because it is less expensive than multivitamins, herbal supplements, as well as

multivitamins for those who could afford them.

VII. Families who own a first aid kit

Based on the data that was gathered that is shown in the figure above 54% of

respondents indicated that they have no first aid kit at their home, while 46% indicated that they

have a first aid kit.

Analysis and Interpretation:

According to the data gathered, the above chart shows that not all PulangBukid

community households have a first aid kit. A basic first aid kit, similar to a simplified CHN bag or

kit, includes essentials such as a digital thermometer, measuring tape, scissors, bandage,

gauze, alcohol or iodine povidone for cleaning around wounds, tweezers, and over-the-counter

medications. A majority of interviewees stated that they do not have a first-aid kit in their homes.

Almost half of the respondents who answered yes have these essential items and keep them in

one particular corner of the house, if not in a kit or container, where they can be easily found if

needed. Those who answered that they don't have a first aid kit stated they have alcohol, iodine

povidone, and some over-the-counter medications but are too scared or unsure to administer

first aid themselves and would rather go to the barangay health center or the nearest clinic or

hospital for treatment.

VIII. Families that have been to a hospital

Actual Findings:

Based on the data that was gathered that is shown in the figure above 78% answered

“yes” on having been to a hospital and 22% answered “no”.

Analysis and Interpretation:

From the information collected and presented earlier, most people surveyed reported

having been hospitalized due to illnesses or health issues, while a smaller portion stated they

hadn't experienced any hospital admission. The majority of respondents have either visited,

been admitted to, or have some familiarity with hospitals, including their services, appearance,

and proximity, whether from recent experiences or during their earlier years. The minority of the

population responded negatively to having visited a hospital, mentioning reasons such as being

taught to avoid unnecessary visits due to potential exposure to illnesses, financial

considerations, and opting for employer-provided online consultations, which diminishes the

necessity of physically going to clinics or hospitals for routine checkups.

IX. The last time they visited a doctor.

Based on the data that was gathered that is shown in the figure above 52% of

respondents answered “years ago”, followed by 14% who said “months ago”, then 8% answered

“weeks ago”, and 26% claimed they have never received any type of doctor’s consultation.

Analysis and Interpretation:

According to the collected data, the majority of respondents said that the last time they

saw a doctor or received a consultation was years ago, followed by never had, then months

ago, and weeks ago. The majority of respondents have visited, been admitted to, or at least

visited a hospital and are familiar with what hospitals look like, what services they provide, and

where the nearest hospitals are, if not recently, when they were younger. Among these

respondents, many have undergone hospitalization for various reasons such as major or minor

surgeries, sought consultations with specialists at outpatient departments in major hospitals,

and some have visited hospitals to support friends or relatives rather than for personal medical

needs. Although most indicated that they hadn't seen a doctor years ago, this was primarily

attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic's stay-at-home protocols. About 26% of respondents who

indicated never having seen a doctor cited reasons such as financial limitations, personal
preferences, or simply not having a compelling reason to seek medical consultation or see a

specialist in general.

X. Management of sick member/s of the family

The data indicates that 80% of the respondents when being sick stays at home and tries

treating it, while 20% respondents goes to the hospital when being sick.

Analysis and Interpretation:

The gathered data illustrates how individuals handle the illness of their family members,

with an 80% majority preferring home remedies, over-the-counter medications, and rest, while a

20% minority opts for hospital or emergency room admission for their sick family members.

Among the minority group, some rush their relatives to nearby clinics or hospitals due to their

unwavering trust and confidence in healthcare professionals like doctors and nurses.

Interestingly, many from the majority group recall being advised by family members to consume

a mixture of carbonated beverage, Royal Tru Orange, and a raw egg to alleviate fever and

rashes. Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages. However, it also suggests the

potential need for additional information or education within the community regarding first aid

techniques or the management of common discomfort-causing symptoms.


XI. Knowledge on how to manage COVID-19

Actual Findings:

Based on the data that was gathered that is shown in the figure above indicates that

58% of the respondents know how to manage things if they catch the COVID-19 virus, while

42% responded of not knowing how to manage COVID.

Analysis and Interpretation:

According to the findings, most families have expressed confidence in their ability to

manage a potential coronavirus infection, stating they possess adequate knowledge on how to

handle it. However, a minority, comprising 42% of respondents, admitted to lacking the know-

how in managing a COVID-19 infection. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious

disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Most people infected with the virus will experience

mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However,

some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. The best way to prevent and slow

down transmission is to be well informed about the disease and how the virus spreads.

Information drives and health education have been helping the people of Sitio Pulang Bukid

confirm that they know what to do, such as isolating the person who becomes ill with COVID

and maintaining their immunities and protect yourself and others from infection by staying at
least 1 meter apart from others, wearing a properly fitted mask, and washing your hands or

using an alcohol-based rub frequently.

XII. Self-management when catching a cold/fever.

The data indicates that 78% of the respondents rely on herbal medicines whenever

catching cold or fever, while 22% of the respondents take medicine.

Analysis and Interpretation:

According to the data collected, 78% of respondents confirmed that they use herbal

medicines to treat a cold/fever. A smaller proportion of respondents confirmed that they have an

over-the-counter medication supply at home and that they prefer immediate relief from the

discomfort or symptom. When a family member becomes ill from a cold or fever, the majority of

respondents said they treat themselves or the family member with over-the-counter

medications.
XIII. Following the doctor’s advice about health concerns.

Based on the data that was gathered that is shown in the figure above 82% of the

respondents follow the doctor’s advice when it comes to their health, while 18% of the

population responded to not following their doctors’ advice.

Analysis and Interpretation:

According to the chart provided, 82% of respondents from Sitio Pulang Bukid

acknowledged consistently adhering to their doctors' instructions, expressing unwavering

confidence and trust in them. A majority of people follow what their doctors advise regarding

their health maintenance. However, 18% of people do not follow because they are much more

comfortable in their daily practices, prefer not to make changes to their lifestyles that go against

the doctor's orders, and do not want to break their practices.
