    A Simple Science Investigation


    • Minimal materials
    • Recording sheet

    Planted in Elementary
    MATERIALS
    • 12 oz water bottle per student
    • Vegetable oil
    • Liquid food coloring
    • Effervescent tablets

    DIRECTIONS
    1. Have students drink the water from their water
    bottle until there is about 2-3 inches left.
    2. Fill the bottle the rest of the way with the
    vegetable oil. Leave 2-3 inches of space at the top
    of the bottle.
    3. Add 10-15 drops of liquid food coloring.
    4. Add 1 effervescent tablet to the bottle. Do not put
    the lid on the bottle!
    5. Watch the food coloring move up the bottle.
    6. When the bubbles subside, you can repeat with
    another effervescent tablet or put the cap on the
    bottle.
