Regardless of type, each shelf has two SPM-N (System Processor Modules – Nano) modules to
manage the system.

The SPM-N
• Acts as the gateway from Network Element to EMS via TL1
• Gathers alarms from modules and relays them to GUI, EMS or TL1 interfaces
• Provides redundancy via Copy B backup that keeps an identical database of the provisioning
Access to SPM-N can be via Craft User Interface (GUI), INM, EMS or TL1 to control the provisioning of
modules.

NOTE:
SPM-N modules cannot be installed in the Pico shelf. The management functionality of the Pico is
incorporated in the integrated common modules

The Primary SPMNs are connected in a ring for survivability while the Standby SPMNs are connected
via a second ring.

CT-1 and CT-2 are RJ-45 Ethernet connectors on the SPM-N cards. The connectivity is referred to as
daisy chained where CT1 of Shelf 1 connects to CT2 of Shelf2. CT1 of Shelf 2 then connects to CT2 of
Shelf 3 and so on.

The OSC channel (1510nm) is added by the INPUT amp after the Output amplification (TX) and is
removed before the Input amplification (RX) of the DWDM channels. The OSC channel carries the
Embedded Operations Network (EON).

The Nano OTS supports five different versions of the Optical Add/Drop Mux (OADM) modules.

OADM88-xR
OADM88-xR is a two-slot module that combines input amplifier, output amplifier, interleaver, and wavelength switch
capabilities supporting up to 88 Channels and 4 degrees (A, B, C, and D) in a Nano OTS.

OADM88-8D-xR
OADM88-8D-xR is a two-slot module that combines input amplifier, output amplifier, interleaver, and wavelength
switch capabilities supporting up to 88 Channels and 8 degrees (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H) in a Nano OTS.

OADM88-8DS-xR
OADM88-8D-xR is a single-slot module that combines input amplifier, output amplifier, interleaver, and
wavelength switch capabilities supporting up to 88 Channels and 8 degrees (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H) in a Nano
OTS.

OADMF8
OADMF8 is an optical multiplexer with 8 fixed add/drop channels (100 GHz spacing) and the ability to pass through
up to 44 channels and is used to support Fixed DWDM applications.

Directionless OADM (DXOADM)

The Directionless Solution for the Nano uses the OADM88-8D modules as Degrees and the DXOADM + OMD88
combination as Directionless Add/Drop terminals. Multiple Directionless Add/Drop terminals are supported. Most
common deployment will be 2 DXOADM terminals with up to 6 Degrees

Module Port functions:

Test - The test interface transmits a copy of the DWDM Line In signal after OSC drop that is nominally -
22dB lower in power than the actual DWDM Line In signal, and also the same interface transmits a copy
of the DWDM Line Out signal, before OSC add which is nominally -22dB lower in power than the actual
DWDM Line Out signal.

Aux 1 and Aux 2 - Two Input and Output interfaces support auxiliary devices such as OMDs.

Exp/Aux 3 - The Input and Output interfaces can be configured for express traffic to another degree.

Exp 1, Exp 2, Exp 3, Exp 4, Exp 5, Exp 6, Exp 7 - The two Input and Output interfaces are used for
express traffic to another degree.

DCM - The IR (Intermediate Reach) version of the module supports an Input and Output interface for
DCM insertion for Chromatic Dispersion compensation. The DCM connector on the OADM88-8D-IR
supports external DCM applications. You must account for DCM insertion loss in the span loss
calculation to insure that you are in the gain range of the IR module. Refer to Dispersion Compensation
Modules (DCMs) for DCM insertion loss.

The LR (Long Reach) and ER (Extended Reach) versions of the module support an Input and Output
interface for DCM Mid-Stage Access for Chromatic Dispersion compensation. The DCM connector on
the OADM88-8D-LR and OADM88-8D-ER supports internal DCM applications.
DWDM Line - The Input and Output interface is provided for the DWDM Line (OTS).
