Questions 25–29
Read the questions below.
Then read the article on the next page in which people describe where they live.
For questions 25–29, circle the correct letter A, B or C.
Zach
I lived in a city for three years before we came here and
it was too dangerous to cycle on the roads. But here
there are cycle paths everywhere and not much traffic so
it’s safe. And it’s a good way to get fit. The people who
live in our small town are nice and always stop for a
chat. Unfortunately, it’s full of tourists during the
summer. They come here to visit the castle and
museums, for some reason.
Melissa
There’s nothing to do here unless you like looking at
really old buildings, which doesn’t interest me. There are
very few buses and no railway station, so this has to
change if young people are going to stay here. If you
want to go to the beach for a day out, for example, it’s
very difficult. I’d like to live in a city, where you can go
shopping or see a film whenever you want. That would
be much better!
Greta
Our town is full of 15th century buildings and lots of
amazing things happened here in the past. That’s why I
love it! And it’s quite small too, so we know all our
neighbours. But there aren’t very many things for young
people to do here. Where I was born you could play
volleyball on the beach and do watersports like
surfboarding. I really miss living there.
Part 6
Questions 30–34
Scarlett has always been brilliant at playing video games, but she often thought
they were boring. When she was 9, she started learning to write computer
programs. Her idea was to invent a video game that she’d really enjoy. At 11,
Scarlett finished her game and called it New Earth. She is surprised that over fifty
thousand people have bought it and she’s now very well known. The game has
also made her really rich.
New Earth is a video game where players try to help the planet. They play in
teams to find answers to difficult problems such as making sure every country
has excellent schools, clean drinking water and enough food.
When Scarlett was learning how to make New Earth, she didn’t need anyone’s
help. She used the instructions on Funity, a website which teaches young people
how to build video games. It also allows children to upload their games onto its
website. Millions of Funity members come together to play these games in online
clubs all around the world.
Scarlett receives many messages from fans, and she reads them all. They
sometimes suggest brilliant ways to improve New Earth – which is just great! But
sadly she doesn’t always have time to write replies.
Scarlett wants to build more video games, but she isn’t ready to do that yet. This
July, she’s showing children the easiest way to make their own video games at a
summer camp. And when she’s old enough, she wants to study computer
science at college.
31 In the second paragraph, the writer A who enjoys playing the New Earth
is explaining video game.
33 What do we learn about Scarlett in A She makes sure she answers all
the fourth paragraph? her fans’ messages.
