In an auditorium which is to be maintained at a temperature not exceeding

24 deg C, and a relative humidity not exceeding 60%, a sensible heat load of 132 KW
and 84 Kg/hr of moisture has to be removed. Air is supplied to the auditorium at 15 deg C
a) How many kg of air per hour must be supplied?
b) What is the dew point temperature of supply air and what is its relative humidity?
c) How much latent heat is picked up in the auditorium?
d) What is the sensible heat factor?
e) What is the Apparatus Dew Point of the coil and its By-Pass Factor?

Be sure when making schematic 15 deg C supply air
diagram, you can identify 1
how many state occurs supply air when added with sensible an

132 KW (sensible)
24 deg C DB 84 kg/hr (moisture)
60% RH

make state table:

State 1 2
DB ᵒC 15 24 Since there are 2 conditions already present,
WB ᵒC 18.6 by plotting to Psychrometric chart, all other conditions
RH % 60 can be found. (see red)
h KJ/kg d.a 52.73
w Kgw/kg da 0.01123
v m3/kg da 0.857

Since, 84kg/hr moisture is to be removed from the room, meaning 84kg/hr is also
being added to room, which is a latent heat:

QL = 2501(ma)(w2 - w1) (ma) = mass rate of dry air

2501 = h(fg) = latent heat of vaporization of water
mass rate of water removed = 84kg/hr = 0.0233 kg/s
(ma)(w2 - w1) = 0.0233 kg/s

QL = 2501 (0.0233)
QL = 58.36 KW (answer for letter c)

From the given, Qs = 132 KW

hence, Qt = Qs + QL
Qt = 58.36 + 132 = 190.36 KW

SHF = Qs/Qt
SHF = 132/190.36
SHF = 0.6934 (answer for letter d)
SHF (sensible heat factor is a line that connects supply air and room conditions)
the slope of SHF can be found using psychrometric chart

this is the slope of SHF = 0.6934 if this is your psychart, use the inner part
if this the found in you psychart, use
the lower half

Since we know that the supply air dry bulb temperature is 15 deg C
then we connect the SHF line to room condition (state 2) and intersect it to the dry bult of 15 deg C
the intersection is the condition of the supply air (state 1)

2
1
since, state 1 is now plotted in the psychart, all other conditions can also be found.

State 1 2
DB ᵒC 15 24
WB ᵒC 14.1 18.6
RH % 91.2 60
h KJ/kg d.a 39.7 52.73
w Kgw/kg da 0.0097 0.01123
v m3/kg da 0.829 0.857

Solving for mass of air per hour supplied,

using Qt = (ma)(h2 - h1)

(ma) = Qt = 190.36
(h2 - h1) (52.73 - 39.7)

(ma) = 14.60936 kg/s

(ma) = 52593.71 kg/hr (answer for letter a)

To find the dew point of a certain condition of air using Psychart,

project that point to the saturation line, the dry bulb of the projected point
in the saturation line is the dew point.

The dewpoint of supply air is 13.5 deg C (answer for letter b)

The relative humidity of supply air is 91.2%

The apparatus dew point is temperature of the surface of cooling coil.

Since not all air will touch the surface of the cooling coil, all air which bypass
the cooling coil will mix with those air that touch.

State 1 is the resultant of mixture of state 2 and ADP (apparatus dew point)
when 2 points are being mixed, the psychart will just connect it with a straight line.
therefore, state 1 which is the resultant is a point in line connecting state 2 and ADP.
ADP is always lying on the saturation line. Thus, ADP is located when the line connecting
1 and 2, is extended until saturation line.

ADP = 12.5 deg C

The by-pass factor (BPF) is the percentage of how many of the air that pass through
cooling coil did not touch the surface of the cooling coil.

BPF = t1 - ADP or simply, (supply temp) - ADP

t2 - ADP (temp of the air before entering the coil) - ADP

BPF = 15 - 12.5
24 - 12.5

BPF = 0.2173 or 21.73% of the air did not touch the surface of the cooling coil

Try this exercise, answers are given:

"cmm" means cubic meter per minute

First is to create the schematic diagram:

tip:
SHR is a line connecting the room condition and supply air
supply air is the resultant of ADP and state 2 (these 3 points are on same line)
state 2 is resultant of 1 and 4 (these 3 points are on same line)

answer:
a) DB = 15.12 deg C
WB = 14 deg C
b) DB = 28.25 deg C
WB = 21.25 deg C
c) ADP = 12 deg C
BPF = 0.192
d) 0.2168 kg/min
when added with sensible and latent heat of the room,
ting condition will be room condition

3.9 KW (latent)
