Mini Project Engg Mechanic
Activity N0 01
Calculate the diameter of sprocket and drive gear with their number of teeth. (GS-150)
• Chain :428
• Links :118
• Sprocket .43 Rear Teeth/15 Front Teeth
Gear Ratio
Gear Ratio= No of teeth on driven gear\No of teeth on drive gear
No of Teeth in Drive Gear = 15
No of Teeth in Driven Gear =43
Gear ratio =43/15
Gear ratio= 2.86
Sprocket
A sprocket, sprocket-wheel or chain wheel is a profiled wheel with teeth that mesh with
a chain, track or other perforated or indented material. The name 'sprocket' applies
generally to any wheel upon which radial projections engage a chain passing over it. It
is distinguished from a gear in that sprockets are never meshed together directly, and
differs from a pulley in that sprockets have teeth and pulleys are smooth except for
timing pulleys used with toothed belts.
Diameter of Sprocket.
Sprocket Pitch Circle Diameter Equation
PD = P / Sin [180 /N] Where:
PD= Pitch Diameter
P= Chain Pitches in inches N=
Number of Teeth in Sprocket
Sol:
PD = P / Sin [180 /N]
PD = 0.5 / Sin [180/43]
PD = 6.849 inches
Activity : 02
Calculate the spacing between two gears (sprocket and drive gear).
(GS-150)
Sprocket Center Distance
When the distance between the driving and driven sprocket can be varied
to suit the length of the chain, this center distance for a tight chain may
be determined by the following formula Sprocket Center Distance
Equation.
Activity No 03
What alteration we can do in gears/ teeth / chain / spacing to
increase the torque.
The main part of the bike is gearbox. Or we can say that heart
of the bike. In the gearbox there are number of gears with
different gear ratio.
In starting they have high torque and low speed setting with
gear arrangements. As speed increase torque decreases with
ratio.
