Chapter II: Verses 51-53


अथोज्जायी ।
ु ं संयम्य नाडीभ्यामाकृ ष्य पवनं शनैः ।
मख

यथा लगति कण्ठात्त ु हृदयावति सस्वनम ॥५१॥
् ु म्भयेि प्राणं
पूववव ि क ् रेचयेतदडया िथा ।
athojjāyī |
mukhaṁ saṁyamya nāḍībhyāmākṛṣya pavanaṁ śanaiḥ |
yathā lagati kaṇṭhāttu hṛdayāvadhi sasvanam ||51||
pūrvavat kumbhayet prāṇaṁ recayediḍayā tathā |
Now ujjāyī [is described].
II.51: Closing the mouth, inhale slowly through both nostrils from the throat to the heart [feeling a
rubbing sensation in the throat].
II.52: Then practice kumbhaka as previously [instructed in sūryabhedana] and exhale the breath
through the left nostril (iḍā).
[Krishnamacharya] During inhalation, the feeling should be from the neck till the diaphragm. Alternate nostril
exhalation is to be inferred.


श्लेष्मदोषहरं कण्ठे देहानलतवविवनम ॥५२॥
नाडीजलोदरािािगु िदोषतवनाशनम ।्

गच्छिा तिष्ठिा कायवमज्जाय्याख्यं ्
ि ु कुम्भकम ॥५३॥
śleṣmadoṣaharaṁ kaṇṭhe dehānalavivardhanam ||52||
nāḍījalodarādhātugatadoṣavināśanam |
gacchatā tiṣṭhatā kāryamujjāyyākhyaṁ tu kumbhakam ||53||
II.52: This removes disorders in the throat caused by kapha and kindles the metabolism in the body.

II.53: It also put an end to diseases in the nāḍī-s, tissues (dhātu-s), and dropsy. This kumbhaka known
as ujjāyī can be practiced while walking or standing.
