BONE METASTASIS
• Bone metastases are very frequently seen complications of cancer, more frequently seen than primary bone
tumors.
• Metastatic bone disease is generally divided into 2 categories as osteoblastic and osteolytic disease.
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF BONE METASTASIS

i. Migration of metastatic tumour cells within blood circulation


ii. Invasion of bone marrow niche
iii. Development within bone tissue through two mechanisms leading to osteolytic or osteosclerotic lesions.
XRAY FEATURES OF BONE LESIONS
1. AGE OF PATIENT

• Patient age is of huge importance in


suggesting a differential diagnosis of focal
bone lesions.
• Primary bone tumors are rare in < 5 years
old and > 40 years old, with exception of
myeloma and chondrosarcoma.
• Metastasis are the commonest lesion over
the age of > 40 years old.
