Unit Title Applying theory of linear equations into a real-life banking problem
Course/Grade Level Grade 7
Teacher Marek Dzianach
Length of Unit 10
Statement of Inquiry
We live in the world of finite recourses. Banks offer a way of sharing the recourses so those
individuals or group of people who are capable of investing intelligently can borrow money from
banks so everybody can profit from their investments.
Inquiry Question
Factual What is compound interest? How can we define or present a linear relationship
between two variables? How many points determine a line?
Conceptual How many pieces of information do we need to determine the equation of a linear
function? Without the graphs and ICT tools can you find this information? What is
the equation of the line that represents the relationship. What is the general
formula for the equal payments credit?
Debatable In Polish economy about 20 years ago, there were popular FCH credits. Politicians
and media encouraged bank customers to take those credits arguing, that they
were the cheapest. Some other politicians and media argued that there is no way to
estimate how much an FCH credits will cost in the future, could be as cheap as they
were before, cheaper or more expensive. They claimed, predictions of the cost of
these credits are nothing but crystal-ball gazing. What do you think, could one be
100% certain that the payments of FCH credits will be much higher in the future or
not?
Assessment
What task(s) will allow students the opportunity to respond to the unit question? What will
constitute acceptable evidence of understanding? How will students show what they have
understood?
Students will first investigate the patterns using spreadsheet and GeoGebra to come up with the
conclusion, that the relationship they are analysing is linear. Low ability students will find the
result from the graph. Able students will find the equation that will lead them to solve the problem
generally. All students will compare the results with online credit calculators.
They will do a short presentation in teams of two for criterion D and take test on linear functions
for criterion A
