THE ENGAGEMENT OF ONLINE SELLING AMONG SENIOR
HIGH STUDENTS

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

We are living in the digital world where almost everything is offered online from news
worldwide, inventions, tourism, Science and technology, and almost all branches of knowledge
are available in just a click of a finger. Truly, the world we live is constanly changing. This
digital world offers the life of man a comfortable life.
Social media are very powerful tool that make our lives connected to each other. One of
the prominent features of the social media is its offer of a free service to its subscribers. One of
its services includes online shopping.
Online shopping deals provide the customer with a variety of products and services,
wherein customers can compare them with deals of other intermediaries also and choose one of
the best deals for them (Sivanesan, 2017).

In addition, online shopping is defined by Master Card Worldwide Insights (2008) is the

process of purchasing goods and services from merchants who sell over the internet.Generally ,it
is also known as internet buying, electronic shopping, online purchasing or internet
shopping.Kim (2004) further denfined internet shopping as examining, searching for, browsing
intention of purchase on the Internet.By looking at other perspective, Chiu et la (2009)
considered online shopping as an exchange of time, effort and money for receiving products or
services.

According to www.definitions.net, “online selling is the act or process of selling goods,

products or services via an internet or mobile app, auction site, online classified advertisement,
online shop, social networking, social media or webshop.”
For Santos(2021) “Selling online is a easy way to make money, especially for many
people who want to build their own business at home, and it is a positive way to reach a larger
population. In online selling many products are in demand all year round.Food,
clothes, shoes, personal accessories, and electronic devices are in the market all the time. ”

However, from the article of Difficulties in Online selling encountered by Grade 12

Students of Bestlink College of the Philippines (2019).Say that most of the teenagers
nowadays, prefer to start a business online.Because its more convenient and much easier to use, it
can avoid heavy traffics, hot weather or any instances that may cause stress.

Using social media for business is so effective you can target your audience but you need
to understand who is your audience, once you defined your audience you can create buyer
personas which can help you understand the best way to speak to your audience.Facebook is one
of the social media used in online selling .In early 2020, facebook launched its e-commerce
platform Facebook shops, which allows retailers to easily sell items via the platform.Through this
service you can showcase the products you will sell on your Facebook business page,in stories
and advertisements.
Facebook is an online social media and social networking service owned by American
company Meta Platforms. Founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg with fellow Harvard College
students and roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and its name
comes from the face book directories often given to American university students. Some user
used Facebook to sell products.Facebook is the best way to reach people as much as we want
and it allows users to share their site link on its page.Facebook has grown up to become more
and more strict because of its large community. ( Wikipedia ,2022)

In addition, a company by the name of Lazada entered the Philippine market in 2012,
introducing e-commerce to the country. Lazada started out by selling things to Filipinos from its
own warehouses. But after only a single year of existence, the business model changed into a
marketplace, allowing independent brands, retailers, and users to sell on the website. The e-
commerce giant now holds the top spot in Philippine e-commerce, with a sizable chunk of its
sales coming from marketplace transactions.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

RRL
There has been increasing interest in under-explored role of customer engagement in online
reviews (Kim et al., 2013; Rossmann et al., 2016).

value, satisfaction, and continued engagement intention

According to the “just price” tradition, associated with Aquinas, sellers should offer their goods
for sale at a single price, viz., the just price. On the standard interpretation of this idea, this is a
function of how much the good costs to produce. But a more recent strain of scholarship argues
that, for Aquinas, the just price mostly is the market price, as determined by the forces of supply
and demand. In this case, there is no disagreement between the just price tradition and modern
thinking about prices (see and cf. Koehn & Wilbratte, 2012).

Customer engagement was conceptualized as second order construct with six dimensions -
social-facilitation, self-connect, intrinsic enjoyment, time-filler, utilitarian experience and
monetary evaluation experiences as per existing literature (Calder et al., 2009, Thakur, 2016).
