Europe is a landmass in the Northern Hemisphere, with the majority of its landmass in the
Eastern Hemisphere. It (www.wikizero.com) is made up of the westernmost peninsulas of Eurasia's
continental landmass. (www.vedantu.com) It shares the Afro-Eurasia continental landmass with both
Asia and Africa, and is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean,
to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the east by Asia. Europe is commonly considered to be
separated from Asia by the watershed of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, the
Greater Caucasus, the Black Sea, and the waterways of the Turkish Straits Although much of this
border is over land, Europe is generally accorded the status of a full continent because of its great
physical size and the weight of (www.wikizero.com) its history and traditions.

Among the landmasses, Europe is an inconsistency. It is a minor part of Eurasia, only slightly
larger than Australia. Yet the peninsular and insular western extremity of the continent,
(www.wikizero.com) thrusting toward the North Atlantic Ocean, provides - thanks to its latitude and
its physical geography - a relatively genial human habitat, and the long processes of human history
came to mark off the region as the home of a distinctive civilization. In spite of its internal diversity,
Europe has thus functioned, from the time it first emerged in the human consciousness, as a world
apart, concentrating - to borrow a phrase from Christopher Marlowe - “infinite riches in a little room.”

“European culture is the root of Western civilization, which traces its lineage back to ancient
Greece and ancient Rome” (James, 2005). The fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD and the
subsequent Migration Period marked the end of Europe's ancient history and the beginning of the
Middle Ages. Renaissance humanism, exploration, art and science led to the modern era. Since the
Age of Discovery, started by Portugal and Spain, Europe played a predominant role in global affairs.
Between the 16th and 20th centuries, European powers colonized at various times the Americas,
almost all of Africa and Oceania, and the majority of Asia.

From the end of the 17th century to (doi.org) the first half of the 19th century, the Age of
Enlightenment, the French Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars altered the continent's cultural,
political, and economic landscape. “The (www.inaturalist.org) Industrial Revolution, which began in
the United Kingdom at the end of the 18th century, ushered in significant economic, cultural, and
social (www.inaturalist.org) transformation throughout Western Europe and subsequently the rest of
the world.”
Both world wars took place for the most part in Europe, contributing to a decline in Western
European dominance in world affairs by the mid-20th century as the Soviet Union and the United
States took prominence. During the Cold War, Europe was divided along the Iron Curtain between
NATO in the West and the Warsaw Pact in the East, until the revolutions of 1989 and fall of the
Berlin Wall.

The Council of Europe was established in 1949 with the objective of uniting Europe in order
to achieve common goals and avoid future wars. Some states' continued European integration led to
the development of the European Union (EU), a distinct political entity that falls between a
confederation and a federation. The EU began in Western Europe, but (www.inaturalist.org) since the
demise of the Soviet Union in 1991, it has been moving eastward. The currency of most countries of
the European Union, the euro, is the most commonly used among Europeans; and the EU's Schengen
Area abolishes border and immigration controls between most of its member states and some non-
member states. There exists a political movement favouring the evolution of the European Union into
a single federation encompassing much of the continent. (www.inaturalist.org)

Nigeria-China relation is seen by some analysts as an era of progression and expansion since
1971. Nigeria’s geo-strategic importance particularly in Africa has made China to look for “amends
for its relative disinterests in the country in previous decades” (Srinivasan, 2008).
