Part-machine Analysis

● Here, we identified the product families in the process using rank order clustering.

Resource Allocation
● Metal Cutting and Wood Cutting machines are shared between the glass tables and
timber desks.
● Sanding and coating machines have been duplicated by UHF and thus are not shared
by the target product family and any other products.

Future State VSM Redesign

Production Demand = 4500 tables per month = 225 tables/day
- 1440 Small Tables (32% of demand)

Schedule & -
- 3060 Medium Tables (68% of demand)
Order Size = 25 (180 Orders)

Load-levelled Work Time:

- 20 days/ month

Box -
-
1 x 8 hours with 2x 30 min breaks.
1 time 5 hour planned maintenance
Takt Time: 8100/4500 = 1.8min/table -> 108s

Pitch = 108s/ table x 25 tables/order = 45 mins/order

Pitch Interval = 420 mins / 45 min = ~9 intervals*

*intervals have been rounded to the nearest whole number

Total x % Total = Intervals Equivalent Time Items Produced

Interval Demand per item per day

9 intervals x 32% = 3 45 x 3 = 135 min 2.88 x 25 = 75

9 intervals x 68% = 6 45 x 6 = 270 min 6.12 x 25 = 150

Techniques Required for Successful
Implementation
Methods to Monitor Quality

- Integrated Quality Control: Workers act as inspectors at every

stage of production.

- Jidoka (autonomation): automatically stopping a machine when

an abnormality occurs.

- Andon: Visual management tool that can alert personnel if there is

an abnormality that needs attention.

- Poka Yoke: Error proofing. Can be done by implementing simple

and inexpensive devices that help operators avoid mistakes in their
work.
Outlook - Industry 4.0
● Use Cyber-physical systems to let clients personalize their
furniture orders via online portals.
● Install an IoT-based inventory tracking system
● Using data analytics to implement a predictive maintenance
system that plans maintenance during scheduled downtime.
● Use robotics and automation to improve productivity and
reduce errors
● Use augmented reality to evaluate pre-production quality
standards.
● Install a touch screen system
