Noun is a word used for naming. It could be humans, animals, things, idea and concepts.

A phrase refers to a group of words which does not express a complete thought. Examples:

Into the bedroom

Outside the gate.


At the bus-stop

On his arrival.

Phrases may be classified as Noun phrase, Adjectival Phrase and Adverbial phrase.

Noun Phrases
A Noun phrase are group of words that has a noun as its headword or keyword. A noun
phrase performs the same function as a noun. It can be formed thus:

 Articles + nouns = a bag, an idea, the book.

 Possessive adjectives + nouns = my biro, your excuses, his position.

 Demonstrative + nouns = this house, that Lady, such people, those women.

 Qualifiers + nouns = some places, all areas, many buildings

 Adjectives + nouns = red pen, beautiful girl, large box.

A noun phrase can function as subject, object, and complement of the sentence.

1. As Subject of a Sentence of the Verb: That fall boy has no father. The underlined
grammatical name is a noun phrase. It function as subject of verb "has".

2. Object of the verb: We discussed the football match. The underlined grammatical
name is noun phrase. Function as object of the verb "discussed".

3. As object of preposition: They are talking about the robbery incident. The underlined
grammatical name is noun phrase. Function as object of preposition "about."

4. As an appositive to another noun: Lagos City of Excellence, is densely populated. The


underlined grammatical name is Noun phrase. Function as appositive to another noun
"Lagos".
